I think this is the reason why it has changed. Maybe the previous behaviour wasn't intended at all.

This is why I never. EVER use default keybindings.

Any game I go into, first chance I get I pause everything to completely remap my controls. And the first thing I do is I cut out that sh*tty WASD crap and map my movement to ESDF. Why? This puts your ring, middle and pointer finger in charge of movement and frees up the pinky to use A for something else.

Maybe that something else can be your deselect hands
(but I use it for my head tech. I actually have no problem with deselect hands being on Z, since ESDF means my pinky is already in position to strike it at any time).

A lot of you guys, your problems could be solved by abandoning the ridiculously obsolete WASD movement. It's hampering you. JOIN THE NEW AGE OF ESDF!

EDSF...? eh... no. I don't want to have to turn my touch pad off, and having those keys set like that would cause more problems... guess I have bad habits that a piano teacher would strike me for.

I personally was ok with this change. Can't remember, but I don't think it was in at 1.0. It was a later patch. Despite that it really didn't help with anything. Not for me anyway, since I rarely empty my hands. It was not quite the way I would have wanted it. Mainly being able to select tool, and then return to prior selected slot. So it didn't do that, as that is something that would have been nice; being able to switch between tool and combat with ease.

It did not bother me either way, that change & revert. I just went along with it for its' time, despite the accidents that did happen. Someone mentioned sprint... They personally I only use when I am on mostly flat terrain and don't have enemies in my way; otherwise it is combat or multi-jump past them. So empty hands would not be very useful when combat is nearby. Besides the "Z" key has been there since launch, and I could use it, but I did not have a reason to...

That is my perspective... This was one I could shrug off, as the cons outweighed the pros. At least for me. Gotten killed too many times due to that change & "accidents" that occurred.:nurutease:

Not sure I get that piano thing, but a touch pad?

Oooh wait, you play on one of those laptops that has the... the little pad thing under the spacebar? Yeah I have one of those.

... why do you keep it on? I mean, if you have a mouse... isn't the touchpad redundant?

because I don't feel like disabling it. That and just in case my mouse goes out... I've been through a lot of mice over the years. Nice to have alternative, so I just leave it on just in case. Beside that arrangement would feel quite awkward for me... And yes I have been using the WASD keys for years, since that is the default controls. I have habit to use default controls for most games on the computer. I only make minor adjustments.

Since most games that use WASD use that as default I keep with it so I don't have to change too much. I mean I play a lot of games over the years... Not that I am stubborn just better for convenience in my case. The quicker I can just pick up a game and play, the better. Even if I am adaptable. If the ESDA what ever was put to default I probably leave it and just remember for that specific game, or realize the hard way; since I play a lot of older games as well.

And yes a laptop. I do have a desktop, but I can say that starbound will not run on it. My desktop was my first computer I ever bought myself. 2000 I believe, with only 512mb of ram. I have an older one but that is stretching it... :nurutease:

Awww lucky. I wish Starbound would run on MY Laptop. It's an old blasted thing...

well it is a laptop that has a max resolution of 1366x768 or something like that. Runs best on 1280x720 though. It is a 2012 laptop, or well when I received it anyhow. Was a gift from my parents... I could say this is my first owned laptop, and my second owned computer; if you don't count the ancient 486 that I have with a few mb of ram that runs win 3.2. It is not the best granted, as right now it is low end. But what computer eventually doesn't get to that range after a while anyway. :nurutease:

I am amazed what my laptop can run, but glad it does. Oh it is only win 8, as I refused to upgrade to win 10. Find it better to get one with that OS on it by default a better option than upgrading due to the sheer amount of reinstalls of programs, games and drivers I would have to do. So I am glad I stuck with what I have. Granted my computer will not run NMS even if it was fully optimized; I mean it has trouble running planet explorers... I own the latter, but the specs on NMS is a couple integrated cards above mine, if not more; and preferably to have a dedicated for that one. Not that I would want that game when I have this cute game of SB though. :nuruhappy:

I know my laptops limits, but there aren't too many games out there with high end requirements that I would even want to play... Just glad there is a hefty selection I can choose from that will run. :nuruwink:

The thing I don't understand is that this is how it was originally when the new hotbar came out.
There was only the one key to holster. People like me requested that it be changed so that pressing a key again holstered as well.
It was changed, I guess because enough people wanted it.
...And now it's gone back? I can't see why, unless they have something else planned to happen when you press the key of an already equipped item, since now it once again does absolutely nothing. Or maybe they decided to listen to the vocally against it instead and change it back.
Flipflopping on features (albeit small features) so soon after release... Ugh.

It has always been Z. They added the ability to press the number again to holster but not everyone liked it (including me) so they nerfed it in the recent update.

Personally I'm overjoyed at it's removal as I often ended up getting seriously hurt or killed because I pressed the same button by mistake and put my weapon away when I really needed it. In fact I spent a week trying to figure out how to mod that shit. Since you can bind Z to another key or on to your mouse, if you have one that can bind keypresses to buttons, I don't see what the problem is in it's removal.

I noticed that change but also noticed that settlement guards no longer ask you to lower your weapons nor do they attack you for holding a weapon. I think it's good, though it may make role-playing a bit more complicated, instead of holstering your weapon(s) you would have to switch to a blank slot or maybe an instrument.

Actually, for as long as I can remember, the Z key had the function of unequipping whatever was in your hands. At some point, they ended up adding that same function to pressing the hotkey of your currently equipped item. So, in this change, no real functionality was actually lost...just an additional shortcut to an existing function. A shortcut which can easily lead to the death of anyone who accidentally double-taps an item hotkey at the wrong time. So, I consider it a change for the better.

I like pressing hotkey numbers to unequip my things.
But there are people who press the same button more then once when they in combat and they like it this way. I've seen a lot of complains about it when 1.0 came out. Now it's reversed. People like me are the ones who complain.

The only possible solution for this situation is to have a checkbox in options to alter unequipping behaviour between one of those two states.

    I don't get it.
They changed it because people didn't like it. But they changed it in the first place because people wanted it.
There are obviously two sides here. So, like any logical human being they... flipflop between supporting the two sides?
Why not... I dunno, make it a tickable option instead of once again removing it, making the group that liked it as angry as the group who disliked it would be if it was left in?
What the hell is it with this hotbar and annoying changes that split people and that are unfixable without dev intervention?
I mean, how long would it have taken to make it optional? You've already coded both versions. Unless Starbound's code is a complete mess or there are other arbitrary and stupid restrictions, it really REALLY shouldn't have been hard to:
-add a button in the options menu
-make the option disable/enable a value that enables number deselection
BAM! Maybe half an hour's extra work, possibly up to two hours depending on how horrendously difficult it is to change the code despite being the ones who wrote the entire engine, and instead of choosing between angering one side or the other, both sides can be happy.
    But nooooooooooooo.

Probably for the same reason that literally the first thing I have to do every single fucking time that I load into the game is move the inventory off to the side of the screen into the exact same position that I always put it in.

I don't understand why they won't fix such a critically annoying issue like no UI positional memory and missing or lackluster tickbox options.

At first I thought I am remembering ncorrectly and that it's existence was just an imagination, but now that you say it, it was probably real :(

1.st you play on a british keyboard, Z is one of the keys further away on the german one for example. and there is also the ><| key nex to the shift key.
