...there are weapon drops in chests?

I'v been playing for a very long time now,and ever since the planet level overhaul, any melee weapons obtained with methods besides crafting (chests, merchants, boss drops) is utterly useless...

Only at the beginning of the game, where you have no ores to craft weapons yourself, there is a reason to use a weapon found from a chest. But after that, mining for 5 minutes in any new sector will provide you with the best weapons possible for that sector, which I find to be a huge letdown.

I know it's very hard to survive with weapons from a previous sector and to explore you need something of reasonable power, but getting the best with the least effort?

Because the game's already heavy on the grind.

You want to throw RNG chest drop weapons into the mix? No thank you, digging for ores is bad enough.

It's all luck man. That and what sector your at.
I found a bone club after mini boss kill that does spread damage and kills things better even above it's tier.
I found a good knife on another planet.
You probrably just have bad luck.

    Really? =O

In my case, the drops from say, delta sector have hardly the DPS of weapons CRAFTED in gamma sector...I truly think it's a shame...

Either the craftable weapons need nerfed, the loot weapons need buffed, or a little of both. There's no fun in finding junk weapons at every turn while the best is easily crafted from the beginning of the sector.

Edit: I also think the status effects for weapons need to scale better to the weapon's tier too. A poison effect on a 5k hp monster that does 3 dps is kinda like farting at a hurricane.

There's still legendaries, guns. And the weapons you craft don't have magic effects on them. Chest weapons can have faster speeds.

I noticed that crafted weapons are great for raw power because they are generally slower and lack nifty effects to compensate.

The DPS of the found weapons; esp. the rares (blue) and legendary (purple); can be very misleading. Often they propagate a secondary attack, an area effect or other 'stacking' damage. Be sure to give each a dry run. I had a legendary 1H grenade launcher I found in sector 7 that was completely overpowering mobs throughout sector 8 and still useful in sector 9.

Probably the best way to describe it is this: Crafted is raw damage output per swing with nothing fancy, while the ones with secondary effects and such have utility on them that the crafted ones lack.

luck/beta, you answered your own question there are weapon drops in chests because there are weapon drops in chests.

I've gotten a lot of my legendaries out of chests. They seem good to me.

The best I ever got out of a chest was a 34 DPS weapon in either Alpha or Beta, I can't remember. (That was a lot back then)

Also, I went up in an airship and looted all the chests. I beamed up, came back, and some of the chests had stuff in them again? I was in single player.

I thought they turned aggressive if you looted their containers.

Not one thing in this game struck me with the word 'grind'. Rinse-repeat, sure, but in no way have I ever had to grind anything. You don't level up, you don't have to keep clearing any buildings for any reason. You find ore, make gear, kill bosses X number of times. That's not really a grind, that's just flawed linear advancement. Grind insinuates we're doing something to increase in strength. A person can clear this game's progression tree in two days without binging. That hardly strikes me as a grind.

If anything, we need more grind, less linearity. I find no reason to continue playing once I'm wearing impervium. Frankly, I had to force myself to even play up to that point once it became clear to me that all I was doing was climbing a very narrow ladder to get to the next gear category. I wasn't going to preorder and support this game and not actually find out what it felt like to wear end-game armor. However, upon doing so, I was left with a seriously heavy case of the now-what?'s.

I don't think the way poison and fire work has changed since the switch from the armor penetration system. Back then, everything had 100 hp, so 3 damage a second was always relevant. The status effects just need to be updated.

Balancing is still a major factor of the beta.

Personally I seem to find weapons that are just under or around the same DPS of my crafted weapons for that tier. For example my first crafted two handed sword had +2 more DPS than my starting weapon. I then I had a gun drop with roughly the same DPS as my crafted sword. All other drops for that planet ranged around that average.

You clearly don't try to legitimately build anything, do you?
Try building a nice looking house of, I dunno, steel blocks.

Thankfully I have the Transmute mod which allows me to turn my vast quantities of Copper Ore/Bars into Iron Ore/Bars at the cost of coal and the mats. Silver Ore/Bars can be used with just 25 pixels per ore/bar produced, but no loss of coal. Since I also use a mod to turn 10 cobblestones into 1 coal (as well as simple exploring) it makes keeping myself stocked with Iron/Steel much easier than normal. Still doesn't mean building a house out of steel blocks (unless you happen upon a big Apex lab to strip down when you're done, the dungeon type) will be an easy affair, just a bit easier.

I use the Creative mod mode, because trying to build a nice looking semi large building out of anything but dirt and cobblestone is a huge timewasting grindfest.
And that's before decorating the inside with decorative things you can't actually make to begin with.
Vanilla building is just all sorts of painful.
