Can a colony be built underground?

    Hello,

In attempting to build my first colony, I excavated the inside of a mountain.
I then sealed all the gaps (I think, though monsters still get in somehow). I added a nice door and hung lights.
But the colony deed doesn't recognize it as a house.

I also found that an above-ground structure with a full block floor is recognized by the colony deed, but an above-ground structure with a platform floor and dirt cellar below is not.
Has anyone successfully built or extended their colony underground?

I realize that in the in-game 'how to' book does say that that colony must be a "building."
    Thanks.

•You can build a colony wherever you want! Even in the sea or in the sky!
•To make a place ready for your colony deed you just need :

-No holes (in the background nor in the walls/roof/floor. But you can still place windows because its counted as blocks)
    -A door
-A source of light (torch, lamp, etc..)

Remember that the blocks you're using and the furnitures you put in it will play on the NPC's race or clothes / theme

Can we get a picture? It'll be a lot easier to see what the problem is with one.

Also, if the original generated background wall isn't replaced (you could just remove it and place it back if you want) monsters will continue to spawn.
