Somehow I don't think all of this is relevant. I imagine that one day a developer was like: "Hey guys! Look what pretty effect I did! Can you find a use for it?" And the Butterfly Boost was born.
Your explanation is very good, but I disagree that the pair of techs (Bubble and Butterfly) would be immediately lumped in as children's toys, cutesy garbage, and lesser. If we are going to take from real life, and compare aesthetics+marketing, something like pink and butterflies does not mean it should under perform. A race car may have hot pink with barbies on it while a bag of glitter empties out as they go, without making it vastly inferior. Ships have been customised, as well as planes, and numerous other things, so why can't future tech? If I were in a society with equipable techs, and I could customise exhaust to look like butterfly hologrammes instead of whatever the norm is, I would. It's pretty darn cool and makes me feel like a fancy pants. If it were a commercial product, the buyers would eat up something that they can show personality through. If I were an inventor, I would add flare to show it. In this sort of game/situation, I think aesthetics vs. efficiency is not a very relative argument. We don't know enough specifics, in my opinion, to make the argument.
Starbound's lore is very sketchy right now as it is UNIMPLEMENTED. Mass Effect's Biotics and holographic armour, (initially) infinite ammo, etc. are all explained away by Element Zero, a material that changes mass depending on an electrical current. We all know it's BS, but it's Canon, so it is an established law within the universe, it is part of that universe's physics, and why not? It certainly goes a long way to explain a lot of the tech, even if it would not otherwise be at all possible. Starbound's science is not yet established because we're still in the early stages of Beta testing and these things haven't been made clear to us yet. On topic, I think the Butterfly Boost effect would be better used by the Gravity Bubble tech, and vice versa, as the Butterfly effect should (imo) be applied by something that is affected by your inertia, no matter the amount of butterflies, they're still just butterflies and shouldn't be able to instantly propel you hundreds of meters, it should be more of a gentle motion. I'm currently imagining a scientist saying the same thing in a lab, and their friends turning around with a grin. What does everyone else think?
si senior, I am joking but the butterfly boost in my opinion is awesome because it's fast, pretty, providing some available tactics for battle and you can change it's DIRECTION.
I finally found my space bicycle! Now to fuel it with the blood of this doped up... Armstrong? Hmm... strong arms... I don't need to use my arms... 'cause I can ride my bike with No Handlebaaars... Noooo Handlebaaaarrsss... No.. Okay, sorry. But yay! Butterflies (On one of the most potentially threatening lifeforms to ever be powered by a jetpack full of digital butterflies. Scorch Mark Sword Cannibal Floran AWAAAAAYY~!)
Hmmmmm. Doesn't appear to be as simple as I was originally thinking.... just subbing out butterflyboost.animation for gravitybubble.animation made the game crash, so don't do that. Playing with the animation files, the most I could do was make the butterflies not appear, but no animation replaced it... without the gravity bubble tech file, it's hard to say what I'm doing wrong, since I can't compare the two. I'll make a post in the modding forum to see if anyone knows how to make this work - I'm definitely a rookie when it comes to this stuff. That would fall under the 'fantasy' category. Notice that it isn't labeled "tech".
Link to aforementioned thread: http://community.playstarbound.com/...ation-sound-for-butterfly-bubble-boost.62962/ I skimmed the available mods too to see if anyone else had already done this... that'll be a negative, but for some boost-like transportation without a cheesy skin, you might be interested in this one: http://community.playstarbound.com/index.php?resources/ufo-mech.137/
For my part I really like the exotic of the star bound universe but I like the exotic to be bound to a culture or planet. If my char looks exotic and stuff I love the bf boost that's complete okay but I also want to play a cool looking space explorer some time and then I'm bound to use dash, jumps and hook and that makes me pity.
B.U.T.T.E.R.F.L.Y Bionic, Universally Tuned Transit Exosuit; Retro-spectrum Forcefield, Lateral Yield. James Cameron sold Unobtainium to the sci-fi masses. The bar was already set a bit low. Just stick with rainbow powered, near linear travel.
The Bone Dragon boss doesn't really fits sci-fi theme. Butterfly boost isn't that bad, compare to that undead boss.
Except for the Penguin UFO, none of the bosses make sense. First off, why do they pop out of nowhere when you activate the item that summons them? At least the UFO makes sense, considering you just activated a distress beacon, but even then, the fact that it was in orbit begets an explanation. Is it just following you, then appearing whenever you activate the beacon, or are there multiple ships that somehow blanket the entire universe?
I'm fine with the bosses and the style on fun fiction reminds me of "The hitchhikers guide to galaxy". I don't want to see starbound getting serious (damn I laughed because of the decoy princess). I just don't want to be stuck with an exotic moving device without an alternative.
*cough* *cough* Slime boss and Robot boss, tell me how those two don't make sense. Also as for the spawning I'd guess it's pretty much game mechanics as to them just appearing...
I thought the butterfly boost tech was a reference to the SCP Foundation's Dr. Kondraki. There are more obscure references, after all.
