As stated in the title, I don't think that a "tech" ability named Butterfly Boost fits into a science-fiction game. I think it should be replaced with something more "tech" related, like an anti-gravity field.
There's already an electro-bubble tech that does pretty much the same thing. Anyways, we've got pickaces, fire torches, swords,a ship that runs on coal... it's not too far-fetched a thing to find considering we're supposed to be flying around to all sorts of weird and exotic planets. We've got a race of plant people, why not a boost that shoots butterflies? Not everything needs to be neon and chrome to be sci-fi.
None of those things you listed come remotely close to the butterfly bubble, which I would consider extremely far-fetched. Pickaxes, torches, swords, and to an extent, space ships, all exist in real life. The Butterfly Boost makes the Bubble Boost tech obsolete, and stands out like a sore thumb in what is supposed to be a sci-fi atmosphere. Things do not have to be neon and chrome to be sci-fi, that is true, but it certainly helps.
I think you just have a problem with butterflies. What exactly is wrong with it, just the animation? To play devils advocate, flaming 2-handed swords and monster eyeball shields do not exist in real life, and neither does the morphball tech. Butterfly tech seems to be alien in nature, I don't see a problem with it. Is it because it doesn't fit inside of the general sci fi motif?
All of those things I mentioned, aside from the space ship, are in no way sci-fi are they though? I spent a lot of my last gametime farming wheat and carrots to bake carrotbread, more rural than sci-fi isn't it? A lot of items and activities within the game aren't sci-fi at all, you can't really slot the game into that singular genre very well. Honestly, in a game with cannibal plant people growing organic lights, homes and furniture, robots stuck in a techy middle ages and bird people styled after the aztecs, complaining about butterflies seems silly. If it makes you feel better why don't you pretend they're holograms or being made of pure energy, something with imagination instead of chrome and neon. Or go grab the gravity bubble: http://starbound.gamepedia.com/Gravity_Bubble
IMO, this game has a Silly theme instead of a SciFi theme. We have robots wielding pickaxes for mining and psychopathic vegetable. I don't see why butterflies wouldn't fit perfectly. =)
Oh, and another hilarious mechanic: If you find diamonds (diamond ore), you throw them into a furnace. That's totally useful considering that diamonds consist of carbon and are flammable...
I love my holographic Butterfly Boost. They're clearly not real butterflies, as they break down when they're away from your body for a few seconds. Plus, I love Butterfly Boost and would be extremely miffed if they transformed it into some stupid digital light beam sort of thing. That being said, they should make a tech that mimics butterfly boost, but is more... science-ish. But who knows? Maybe its already in game and you just haven't discovered it yet? Only time will tell.
yea, they do break apart so it would make sense that the butterflys are holograms that are added in for effect because whoever invented the butterfly boost probably saw that it was pink and was all like "hey, I should add butterflys".
The butterfly boost seems sci-fi enough. As others have pointed out, the butterflies dissipate shortly after being produced, making it clear that they are synthetic, either as some kind of holographic projection or perhaps just an aesthetically-clever way to manage exhaust output. The question is WHY something like that would be made in a sci-fi setting... and the only plausible explanation I cam think of is by thinking of it as a commercial product: A device that's primary purpose is travel, opting for a pink and butterflies aesthetic... The butterfly boost appears to be the sci-fi equivalent to a little girl's bicycle. Which is plausible in a sci-fi setting. What is NOT plausible is that the little girl's bicycle is outperforming... everything else. That's like a little girl's bike being the winning bike in the Tour De France... Even if it's being operated by Lance Armstrong with freshly doped blood, there's just no way that could compete with bikes designed solely for performance. So, I'd say the best solution is to keep the butterfly boost, but maybe swap what it does with the gravity bubble, putting it in its place as an inferior in terms of performance.
That makes perfect sense. Anyone who's gonna argue with Haltus' point is stupid, except for the question as to why the hell would you find a little girls tricycle in a deserted wasteland of a planet....
Eh, I would be so quick to close the case. So long as said argument is based on sound logic, and not something stupid in the first place... which, I hate to say it, is pretty common on the web, and these forums are no exception, unfortunately. /shrug. Maybe the space-FedEx ship crashed, and what you found was one of the few pieces of debris that survived atmospheric reentry - I imagine those tech chests are pretty durable. ...and some poor little alien girl never got that Butterfly Boost that space-santa promised her...
Because never at any point has there been a little girl living in any of the ancient civilizations. A lot of things in this game are illogical. Best to not over think it.
/shrug. Maybe the space-FedEx ship crashed, and what you found was one of the few pieces of debris that survived atmospheric reentry - I imagine those tech chests are pretty durable. ...and some poor little alien girl never got that Butterfly Boost that space-santa promised her...[/quote] Well then my mission will be to give that gift to the little alien girl by travelling the cosmos... I'll also check the address on the back.
SIR, WE HAVE TO THINK OVER IT. THIS IS A BIG DEAL FOR PEOPLE WHO ACTUALLY TRY TO THINK LOGICALLY "yay science, physics and logic"
I do hope you're joking. I'm fine with just the thought that someone somewhere thought it was a good idea to harness the powerful flight capabilities of butterflies. Because obviously, space butterflies work like that.
I like the idea of it being the scifi equivalent of a barbie jeep, In a game like starbound that's just perfect.
