Building seems kinda useless....

What the title says what is the real benefit of building a base? Because you will be hopping from planet to planet all the time.
It is a short post I know but I just wanted to point this out.

Would be cool if you could construct stargate in your ship and other end in you homebase istead of spending all that fluel to just to visit your HB. But there's also significantly longer loading time between planets than just ship and planet so the stargate would be as slow as ship travel or is the planet loaded much faster from save file compared to when it's created for 1st time from coordinates? Anyways there's button to make planet as home in the game already so one can return home any time He wishes to burn some extra fuel.

Well its kind of hard to make that assumption without playing the game. Obviously you are going to build a house so that you have somewhere to gather yourself as you prepare for a big dungeon. Then you will keep returning to that planet until you find one that suits you better or has a dungeon that you need to prep for.

Everyone that's posted here has a good point, so let me propose my own. Crafting and Construction are both as much parts of the game as the exploration. Yes, eventually you'll be off to other planets, but why should that keep you from making yourself something to call your own? If you make a building on your starting planet, you also have a way to go back and say "Wow, I started with THIS?!" when you're building space-fortresses on far-off alien worlds. Humble beginnings, you know?

    Necessary? Not really.
    Awesome? Definitely.

I'm a firm believer of the whole 'do stuff you find enjoyable in games rather than just whats necessary'.

I have watched twitch streams about 20 hours in last two days about starbound and basically it takes lot's of time to gather enough wood = fuel to get higher level planet and aspecially when one lands on arid planet where trees are rarity. Only reason to return to previous planet is if you have troubled about too high level foes and maybe if You had build so well equpped crafting shop that it's all machines absolutely dont fit in Your tiny ship. I watched one very frustated Youtuber just trying to hunt rare trees for hours to get back from arid planet infested with evil instakill monsters.

There are only two reason why you would "build" anything on a planet.
    -Farming
-The will to create awesome construction projects

Everything else should stay on your ship.

Well there hasn't been a need to farm for me yet! :p
But I really think that the devs should make building stuff more important then it is right now. But I am really enjoying myself with Starbound and beta is beta.

I've wondered this myself. It seems it's completely an aesthetic thing, if you want to 'claim' a planet for your own, or you just really love building and want to get your creative juices flowing.

I'm also quite annoyed that there is no real incentive to build houses/bases.
In Terraria I had to build houses for the NPCs in a proper way (walls, doors, table...).
I had to make a bed to set my spawn point.

Right now my "house" is a long corridor made of dirt with two doors without a background wall and no furniture
at all because it does not seem to matter what I do with it.

I assume we'll eventually run out of storage/NPC/Crafting etc. space on our small little ship. Perhaps we can get larger ships - but until then it makes sense to have a home base on a planet.

    Your ship is your base.

Why you would want a home on some foreign world when you constantly move around in a mobile fortress is beyond my understanding.

The ship is hardly a fortress, is the problem. Even then, a world offers much more building opportunity than a ship would. Not everyone wants a shack.

You're concerned about people who actually want to create big projects? Okay...
