Building bases: what drives you?

Hey folks, just wanted to know, what drives you to build bases on the planets you visit? While I have my own projects, I realize I haven't been doing it as much lately. (Read: not on every planet I go to)

Usually what drives me is that I've reached the point of the game where I feel "finished" (in koala that was tier 5, before sector X) and eventually I think of something random and fun to do. Like the time I made farm that spanned the entire surface of a massive planet and used it to craft 1000 banana breads. I wouldn't really call myself a builder though, I'm not so interested in farming blocks to make buildings.

I just want to build stuff that might maybe in a million years be useful to me or my other characters.
Such as a lunar mining facility, or a lab underneath a poisoned ocean, or atlantis.

EDIT: Forget the moon base... all moons have meteors now, and 3 layers of compressed metal weren't enough to protect it.

well i typically want to create a base that i can use till the next update that wipes its all... but other than that considering ocean worlds have come into play, ive mapped out and had drawn a rough layout of my base will look like

as soon as i get it done ima post that shiz all over the forums and steam :p

basically i want to see the finish product is what drives me. anything that is impossible in the real world just makes it cooler in game under lava base ? sure why not so long as its not wood your using :p

    deep ocean base etc etc

When forced to mine the core of a planet. I might as well set up shop.
Now If I could turn my world into its own mission... then share it... with perhaps a workshop of sorts with other people doing the same thing. I could stand to make something of a planet.

It helps facilitate multi character playing. When a forerunner already set up houses and mine path and all that, it makes things easier for those that came later. Especially fuel on moons. I never get more fuel than I need on moons. I collect them and put them into containers at my moon bases, then just take what I need for a 2 way jump. That way future characters would not be stuck in systems without any fuel left and have to grind for pixel to buy fuel.

The terrain itself. The generation is decent in that respects, although over all is monotonous via biome. All biomes look the same with no variation at the moment. So I don't really build as much as I did in the past due to this. I miss the exploration part in that respects.

So basically the only reason i build, would be just minor things, like tearing down a house because the inhabitant killed me upon visit; then proceed to turn it into a well, water included. That was I think the only thing I have built so far. I may build, but there really is not much planet choice to do so. Barren planets remind me too much of creative in other games, so I find those bland and too level for me to build on. I like working with the terrain, or building with the terrain; since that is where my inspiration comes from.

Regardless of the biome troubles, I know I will find and build once I collect enough materials; at least that part has not changed much. The gathering resources bit.:)

the fact that maybe one day some other guy will come to my terribly handsome floran base and say

"wow thats a pretty cool base" and I'll say "yeah"

    For *me*-
Where must be a gameplay meaning behind building a base. Always. Even if it's rather weak meaning. Like in Terraria - it always start as something small - a place to store your loot, hide from zombies, a house for NPC. But it's not nice for NPC to live in a dirt hole? I must build a house suitable for each NPC character, add some storage to NPC-related good. And there must be some spacing between NPC rooms. Oh.. i must also protect my base from Hardmode hazards... And a greenhouse. And a pond... It could go on like this forever.
But in Starbound case i really wanted and wished base building to be mandatory for progress like in heavy-tech or magic modes for Minecraft - vast base full of tech stuff and machines, filled with different NPC who help me with my work. But all this is just a wishful thinking.

Its stupid, but it mostly driven by my need to put all my stuff somewhere that looks semi-decent. It's hard for me to remember where all my weapon-objects go, or all my special blocks or all my bars if they are in a bunch of chests on my spaceship. Its easier to remember that my cloths go into my wardrobe in my house, my bars go into my workshop/forge. The bars go into the underground storage of my utility shack, my food goes into the kitchen building.

I have a base on the starter planet, so I can transfer ore and top-tier weapons from my more advanced characters to my new characters. And because I can't store all my crap on my ship without making it look ridiculous.

I build a small base on every planet I visit! My only reason is that it protects me from the aliens outside :whoop:

Also, I love being cozy :coffee:

I am building on only one planet right now, but it's fun. My motivation is simply that I like creating cool stuff.

Now the idea of being able to build on a planet, protect those blocks, and then share it... well, that'd be amazing.

My drive? I saw an ocean planet and thought 'that ocean needs an elaborate undersea base'.

The drive is now dead 'cause my fully upgraded ship is my lazy-man's base. If I need to share resources or items with my other characters, I just have my end-game character fly over and drop a 60-slot container with all the gear and resources necessary to go from start to end-game in an hour or so.

    Boredom.
I've essentially "beat" the game in a couple days since there's only four bosses so far with the new progression system, so I'm gonna try and get all the Rainbow recipes and build a rainbow mansion with a Glitch themed vault underneath for all my treasures. :rainbowbarf:

I'm also planning on marking down the coordinates and it'll be a shared home for all my characters I make.
