Now, you have probably all seen this picture: Tiy messed around with this, but ended up thinking it looked bad. And I agree that the combination looks rather odd. So I thought, why not just make a spaceship from scratch with ONLY blocks? Note: I'm not saying that this should replace the normal ship, or any other expansion to that ship, I'm saying allow us to build 2 individual spaceships, one being the original and the other being the block-based. But I'm also suggesting that you have a max of those 2, or you will end up being able to have too many 'teleport spots' (since you can teleport to the ship at will) and I think 2 of those will be okay. Mechanics (could be different): Creating a new spaceship with blocks should be hard and require many special blocks to function. It would need a control pad, thrusters, gravity generators (unless you want a Zero G ship, at which I would say Q and E rotate your character and when you jump you don't stop until you hit something) and power. These placeables should be expensive in the form of rare minerals and a lot of metal. And the ship should also have a big generator, since it would require a lot of power. You build the ship on any planet on special platforms. The ship should make all connected blocks part of the ship, which is why you have these platforms (so that the ship doesn't "glue" the ground with it) and when all required blocks are in place, the spaceship will be able to lift up, creating your very own and fully customizable spaceship! Instead of a "Teleport to Ship" button, you will have 2 of those, one for each ship. Creating a new ship replaces the old in terms of teleporting, but keeps the ship so that any friends in multiplayer can take over it, or it will be an "Abandoned Station" for others to explore and salvage. (And for the sake of filling space with stations, add admin commands to turn off 'Abandoning', basically destroying abandoned ships instead of leaving them behind) I'm also suggesting that you add a limit to how many blocks can be glued to the ship, but the limit will only serve the purpose of making it impossible to fly if the ship has been "glued" to the whole planet. Like a limit if 99999 blocks, which is enough for a HUGE space station, but enough to stop you from lifting off with an entire planet. Or just some way to avoid flying planets. You get the idea. Example: Anyways, I would use this to create my entire base as a flying Space Station, complete with storage, living quarters, Zero-G playgrounds, Bio-domes/gardens, crafting areas and rooms for all my friends to live with me in. And not just a white ship like the picture, but with many different blocks (ALL blocks should be usable, except the special platforms). At the sheer size of this, the 'blocky-ness' will not be noticed. And it just 'feels right' since Starbound is a block-based game! Think something like this (But in 2D): This idea could work well with Abandoned Space Stations and Zero Gravity Biomes. Leave your thoughts below! I'll vote for this. Heck, make this true for ALL ships (because it's your ship, you should be able to customize it.)
i like the pre-generated ships. they look refined and well..no matter how well these blocks may look(let's face it, them be some pretty blocks in that picture) they just look odd. let's wait and see if tiy adds hull blocks and if it looks nice i will come back and give it my vote.
I disagree. Of course it looks odd when combined, but if a ship was made of only blocks, it would only look just as weird as any other base built on a planet. And they don't look odd. But that's opinions.
Honestly I would, from all the possible systems, mostly prefer customizeable layout of ship. That is, not block-by-block building, but picking components and locating them in way you like.
What doesn't make sense to me is why this is voted down to the negatives. When I go to the progress update that the image was from, I see SO many people who wants this. And those who doesn't want it are just people who wouldn't use it, not like they actually don't want it to be in the game. Why restrict us to only build inside and with presets? I mean it's a block based sandbox game, a big part of it is building!
For the limiting factors, I that you can make your ship a giant as you want, provided that you have enough engines to lift it off the ground. Engines can only lift so many blocks, but adding more engines or more advanced engines will allow you to lift more blocks, and therefore a larger ship. As your ship gets bigger, its class or ship type increases, and interstellar law and mechanical issues prevents you from doing certain things, like landing a too-large ship on a planet. You'll probably start building your ship on a planet, and you're able to take off and land it as you please, but later on, you'll get a ship that's too big to take off from a planet and can only land on planets that have low gravity. As your ships approach capital level, they won't be able to land at all, unless it's a one-time deal for a space colony or something. But there's no hard limit to how big your ship can be. If you're insane enough and have the resources, technology and power to do so, you can attach engines to an entire planet and fly that around as "your ship." Of course if the planet you're flying around is 10,000 times bigger than your current ship, then it's going to be 10,000 times costlier. This will require the work of a fairly large group of people to pull off, most likely.
this is a nice idea, it would be cool to not follow to "basic" building rules and build with your own style and way =D
