I noticed that on the starting planet I was on, when I would collect dirt then place it back it was a different color dirt than the dirt I had not taken.

...ok? So how is it not a bug then?

    The feature is intentional.

Man of few words aren't you. The only reason I can see this as being intentional is if the dirt went back to it's original color over time. I can only assume it is this way to represent dirt that has been recently dug up is a darker color. In time though dug up dirt matches the surround dirt in real life. Not to mention I can't be the only one who is going crazy seeing mismatching dirt around their base and can do nothing about it.

Honestly, it does sound like a bug to me. Dirt changing colour when picked up.

The reasoning is much more simpler. - earlier each color of dirt was saved as a separate item.
It resulted in inventory space being filled with hundreds of colors of dirt.
Developers decided - to make all dirt into a single item by removing saving of custom colors.

They may change it after 1.0 - but as of now it is intentional.
