Personally before the update I relied on using unrefined wood as fuel and now with the update it makes it a lot more difficult to get to new planets. I feel that using wood as fuel should be brought back and would make the game easier.
I think it should first be processed, before just shoving a log into your ships fuel tank. Like I have in my mod: You burn wood down to coal. Then you can use the coal, or, turn it into a more potent fuel and then use that instead. That, and I added a few other fuel types to help traveling around (even dirt is a viable resource now). Check out my mod here: http://community.playstarbound.com/index.php?resources/spacefuel-tamefoxx.8/
Dirt? Sounds almost like a trainer mod now. I would like to see trees/planks usable as fuel at a much higher cost per unit. 100:1
Dirt at 5:1, plus a 5 grand pixel cost and you need to gather 5000 dirt to be able to make the fuel.. And must be crafted using a Metal Crafting Table (Going to change next update). I am always looking to balance it though. I find it to be pretty balanced, honestly.
What about 'smelting' wood into coal or something? I think the larger issue is tree regrowth of some sort? I think that was part of the motivation of removing wood as a fuel.
Is possible in my mod. Soon you'll be able to be able to create lesser forms of the big fuel types I have made, that are less costly and easier to acquire (at a sacrifice for effeciency).
Right now the mod scene is so far outside my view. I realize that modding that effect into the game isn't a difficult prospect, what I'm concerned about is solid mechanics throughout vanilla. A healthy modding community is an amazing thing, but with the game in the early stages of testing I'm thinking mostly about the vanilla experience. Though, a thought I had along these lines was a 'workbench' type item called a Solar Reactor that could turn metal bars into metal rods that could be used as fuel, albeit slowly. So I get where you're going with the idea
Mods are created as things that people think are missing from the core game. My mod doesn't touch the main program, so technically it wouldn't be really possible to break something in the game.. And it's only helping your game experience while you wait for another update. Especially now, in the early stages of the game.. If devs see that particular mods are highly liked, it's not unlikely for them to be brought into the game. I can respect it if you choose not to use a mod, but it's something that is not going to hurt your game, but improve it until the next update in the very least.
I'm picturing my character being told to jam dirt into the fuel tank now. I wish I could suspend that much disbelief when it comes to gas prices.
No, wood could be used for better things, and there is no tree regrowth... Better use coal instead since there is plenty of coal underground.
I don't think wood or coal should be used, but something else. I still don't think futuristic spaceships should be powered by coal.
I agree with that. If we could just shove anything into the tank, then how did we manage to get stranded in the first place?
I like that you can use uranium and I think plutonium, but I've only found 2 pieces of each, so maybe making something that's fairly common that only has the use of fuel for vehicles / your ship (if vehicles need fuel)
Or require rigorous processing, something my mod is aiming to do. Yes, space fuel requires work, but the payout is worth it in the end.
Not to sound rude, but I would want to see something implemented by the devs, and not have it a mod. We're making suggestions about what we want to see them put into the game, not what mods we can use instead. That being said I'll probably check it out until we find out what kind of stuff and if something like this is being put in.
Same here, I keep most of my games vanilla until I either beat it or have done everything. Sometimes I won't mod it even after that.
It's the reason I made my mod. I want the idea in the game, and what a better way to do it than put it in myself! Plus, if the devs like the idea, then they could easily add it to the game for everyone to use. The more popular the mod, the more likely it will be added, especially in this stage of development. It's just an option that doesn't hurt, that's for sure. Why fantasize when you can have it now, you know?
That's true, and that's why I didn't want to sound rude, because people making mods that devs like make it easier for it to get officially added into the game
