Bring back wood as fuel! Or atleast decrease the amount of wood for 1 coal.

Discussion in 'Starbound Discussion' started by UnrealAlly, Dec 13, 2013.

?

Should we change the ratio? Or Make would a fuel? Or should we keep it the same.

  1. 2:1 Wood=Coal

    13.6%
  2. Wood back at 1:1 and able to fuel.

    7.1%
  3. Leave it as it is.

    79.3%

Please define "ungodly amounts" and give me the coordinates of the planets you have visited. I would love to stock up on some coal
I haven't run into any real fuel problems but I'm a bad example as I make a habit of exhuming massive chunks of whatever planet I happen to land on. (I will say though, that the amount of coal I get in relation to all the other ores is pretty low)

Not at all, actually? Thanks for being a hypocrite by the by, it makes it way harder to take you seriously in any instance now that we know you'll literally say something is unfavorable and then go out of your way to do it! :3 I.E "Sorry you're mad, this is a forum where we can voice our opinions, now let me shout yours down and tell you how you feel as i become obviously enraged!"

so... you're complaining about the survival aspect of a game that says it's about survival... and you're complaining about it in the early part of the game, which is the MOST about survival?

    yep. that makes sense.

What im trying to say is that i have never hurt for coal on any playthrough of this game not once have i been like shit i cant find coal its just
something i havent done and i have made new toon 1 after the other :wut:

I agree, even when I might be not having an overload of coals to completely refuel my ship to 1k AND having all the coal needed for torches and for crafting all the other things need in the early tiers, even the 10:1 is perfectly fine as you are always started up in a forest biome, which has ofc many, many trees in case you need to get the extra coal. I can float over 3k unrefined woods and far from it do I need that much. 2k goes into the furnace, 200 coal gets added.

Plus, if I'm in a system where there's a jungle or another forest biome after razing the starting planet of all its trees, for the mere cost of 1 fuel I get to move to that other planet and do it again, not to mention a fresh ground filled with more ore. But to be honest, I have never been in this scenario case yet. The starting planet will provide you all the coal you need. Extra coal if you chop extra trees once you got all the wood you want.

I hope trees become farmable soon, then this wont be as much of an issue.

"Finding" coal isn't the problem, it's the quantities you find compared to everything else. Sure you get enough to travel around, but if you need to jump systems with any real frequency (face it you can pretty much set up on one planet and grind through most of a sector's content from there alone) for say, a quest (not in yet I know but stay with me) then the shortage is a bit problematic, and as amusing as it is to strip entire constelations of the plant life, it's a bit..... clunky(?)

Yeah I know and like i said i havent hurt for it meaning i found more than enough to sustain me without even trying and its like this everyitme i play

You did. If increasing the amount of fuel wood gives you makes the game easier then decreasing the amount of fuel wood gives you makes the game harder. Since the only variable here is wood collection, you think that requiring a player to collect more wood makes the game more difficult. Therefor you think collecting wood is difficult.

Either that or you just wanted to imply that the OP was bad at games. That would be rude, though, so I was trying to give you the benefit of the doubt.

This poll is biased! Where's my option for "Remove wood=coal entirely", huh? Geez Pete!! Talk about selfish. Not only did they rant about what they wanted, but they weren't even thinking of people like me. :(

I fail to see the problem. In the Alpha sector, when you are stranded with only an empty fuel tank and a matter manipulator I would think it takes some time to get enough stocks for you to even think about leaving the planet. Or is that too logical to comprehend? From what I saw a full fuel tank (1000) which is 500 coal, which could be a mix of wood and coal resource gathering, can take you upwards to 5 planetary systems, if they are really far, since it's 200-300 to get to another alpha place. Inside systems the fuel cost is minimal, 20-50. So I fail to see how this skimps out on the exploration part. You are exploring, at least I am, that's for sure. I only gotten as far as Beta sector, still gathering things for the robot (too busy raiding dungeons and meeting townspeople to mine for iron) but fuel cost wasn't much harsher there either. And from what I read, then plutonium comes around and makes things easier.

So yes, I fail to see how the ratio, the source, or the need for fuel makes it impossible for the game to deliver on the exploration part. Because since the wipe, all me and my friends are doing is exploring other planets.

For all those people talking about how coal shouldn't be a fuel source but are okay with uranium and such, I think I'll just point out that energy is energy, and even a nuclear power plant generates energy using steam to spin turbines, they just generate the heat in a dramatically different way, I'd only argue that coal is probably a particularly bad fuel source in comparison.

That said I'd be okay with a specific FTL fuel that requires exotic ingredients, which makes just as much sense considering it's an FTL drive which is by default space-magic.

I like that I can turn wood into coal, but I wish I could replant trees for wood. I hate having to cut down trees because I like to use them as decoration too.

I'd just like the spaceships to look a little more steampunk-ey. That'd make it being coal powered make sense.

This is also the reason why I want wood to be usable as fuel or take less wood to make into coal.
Trees are a finite resource. if they were renewable, I'd be fine with it.
