Ok, so here's the idea: If you break a law, such as murder an npc, destroy his house, steal his stuff, and are witnessed by someone, ultimate space cop commandos will chase you. Upon catching you, they punish you depending on the severity of your offense. They could either fine you, send you to a space jail (from which you could break out of like a boss), execute you (only if, for example, you slaughtered an entire town) or impound your spaceship.
What about skill points? (...) Y'know... I love RPGs, really, and your idea just fits in there pretty well, but I don't see SB as a RPG-based, but a sand boxed game. The mechanics of that would be quite a hassle. What, for example, would happen, if they execute you?somehow you would be resurrected, yes? NPCs would have to react on this. If there would be something like this, then SB lacks some serious stealth mechanics. So, let's add stealth stuff and your idea would be cool. Being a space thief would be nice. Otherwise: no, sorry.
It's a good idea, but I think it'd be slightly easier to implement in this manner: If player has Criminal/Most Wanted status with X faction, there's a chance that that faction might send a couple of mercenaries/justiciars/bounty hunters to try and slay the player. They would stop coming if the player either raised his status with the faction or eliminated the faction altogether. Just my thoughts on this. :alien:
They have announced stealth to be in the game you know... Unless I have misinterpreted what you are trying to say. Even with stealth, it seems just a tiny bit silly. Keeper's Idea seems more practical instead of going to "Space Jail" Also, I'm not sure if it would be very easy to code with the whole witness thing. And even if they did code it, I would prefer them just sending a bunch of mercenaries to kill you.
Yep, sounds better, although reminding me on that vampire-hunter mod for TES - Oblivion... ;D And I didn't read about stealth being implemented in the game. That's news to me and makes me curious on how they going to do that... *hm*
Im in jail da na na naaa Its really dark da na na naaa The guy in here is Frank da na na naaa But he dosent like Hot dogs da na na naaa (How I imagine Starbound prison. Harmonica and empty cup included)
What about being kidnapped. The higher your "crime fame", or something... the higher the chance an event occurs, which spawns special NPCs. You can kill 'em, yes, but for each killed NPC 3 will spawn. If they drain your HP down to zero, you won't die, but fall unconscious. (Maybe via a status, each attack causes to the player. Thus only hits of those creatures will "capture" you.) You wake up on a/the prison planet or somewhere else. Dunno...
I don't know if I'd say it doesn't fit because it's a 2D game, but more because it doesn't fit the theme of Starbound completely. I don't think it matters if the game is 2D or 3D, chucklefish could probably make it work (look at all the other stuff they've done in the game already), if it fit in the game style/theme. EDIT: Ok, sorry. I reread that and it was a really confusing way of saying what I meant.
I agree, the problem with a space police is that it doesn't fit the theme of the game, not the dimension of the game.
