Boss Ideas

Discussion in 'Starbound Discussion' started by Tiy, Sep 24, 2013.

  1. May be a bit cliche, but I really want this.

    Mechanical Beetle/scarab:

Covered in brass plating, with high-tech mechanical interior. Instead of a jaws, there is a three-piece drill, similar to those used in mining/digging tunnels. It also sports a large brass horn from it's head, which it uses to flip it's victims into the air.
It moves by digging through the earth, and also flying through the sky, for short distances.

    Possible attacks:
Grind: The beetle "ingests " the player through it's drill mouth, dealing massive damage before spiting him/her out again.
Launch: The beetle comes out of the ground, and flips the player into the air using it's horn.
    Flame bellows. Fire. Fire everywhere.
Stomp: Standing underneath the beetle will cause you to get trampled, dealing damage, and possibly stunning you.
Charge: A running charge toward a player. Will launch the player when reaches him/her, will trample everything else underfoot.
Wing flap: Hovers in the air, and blows things around, using it's wings.
Regurgitate: Spews rocks, dirt and sand out of it's mouth. This causes there to be a pile of dirt/rocks/sand afterwards.
Laser: A laser. Simple as that.
Shockwave: Releases electricity in an area around itself.

During the battle, If you can attack it's underside, or attack it's behind when it's wings are open, you will deal twice the damage.
Optional: During the fight, you will knock off parts of it's brass shell, which will lower it's defense, but make it faster.

Please, no staff bosses. I think the game has enough references to the staff in the game, including credits and accessories and whatnot.
A boss i'd like to see is a large boss on the ground that you have to take down by destroying their legs and stuff. Think castlevania.

    Think "Volcano Boss" from Gradius.

Dunno what to call this guy.
He's popping from his top, so maybe poptop blowcorn?

How about a deranged, early-prototype Glitch boss?

So, we know that the Glitch were made by some race that we don't know about yet. Maybe they didn't get it -quite- right the first time, though.

The boss is a large, clockwork-heavy robot that will prattle off lines throughout the fight. (Maybe even voice acted? Eh? Ah?) It is larger than Glitch are now, as the original design didn't take into account the fine motor skills of smaller figures. Its weapons systems are largely improvised, parts of it that are broken may shoot off sparks or explode to harm the player. The more you damage it, the more unstable it becomes, and the more its lines begin to sound completely batty.

(just a brief summary, actual suggestion thread here)
Basically an automated mining ship that digs a tunnel and take ores from the ground. Defeat it to get the ores (and more) back. Most of its attacks are side effects of its operation, including sweeping mining lasers, tunnel cave-ins, rocket exhausts, hot steam jets, etc.
I'm particularly proud of its lore-friendliness.
Been working on a 3rd version of the writeup, but got distracted by real life.

    Crappy initial Paint sketch:

And certainly I'd love anything HPL-related too.

  11. Yet another - The Psychic Prism

In your long and lonely travel through space and planets you find an ancient ruin.
There's almost nothing valuable around, but then you suddenly notice a big shiny gem lying on the small pedestal.
You reach your hand out to grab it and notice by the corner of your eye a pile of old bones at the base of the pedestal... But too late.
As you touch the gem, your mind becomes imprisoned inside of it. You have no physical form and nothing of your gears, but you can directly use your psychic power to fight enemies you meet here. There are both spawns of Prism (which is not a gem, but rare and cunning psy-predator) or its former mental prisoners.
A "psychic space" of the Prism is a huge and complex maze where normal physical laws do not work (reversed gravity, resurrection, size change, time-bending and so on. Hey, it's an arcade game!:viking:).
You pass through it, fighting enemies and finally defeating a representation pf Prism itself, the master of this world...
...And then you come to yourself standing near pedestal among crumbled stone walls, holding a shiny gem in your hand.
When you look closer, you notice a thin crackle inside of gem...
According to your Space Chronometer, your adventure did not last more than a couple minutes.

Well, hmm. It's more like a sidequest/minigame rather than boss battle... Anyway, maybe I should make a suggestion of it.

went digging in my photoshop folder, I tend to draw some boss worthy stuff and forget about it.

    eye.png

a giant eye thing. My idea for it was that it would start out airborne, somewhat fast and attacking by swiping with its claws and slashing with its tail. as it gets hurt, it loses one pair of wings, reducing its speed (making it easier to hit), it gets more aggressive and might employ a "death stare" of sorts (lazer beam/slowing of movement). at 50% health the second pair of wings detatch, and it crawls on the ground, adopting a charge attack as well as being able to climb walls and ceilings (if fought in a cave).

    glob.png
    the Glob
a generic "giant blob of flesh intent on consuming you and your friends". it would be incredibly resilient (to make up for its slow speed) with potential weak spots being its mouths. since it is the "pet" of some evil scientist, he/she would make sure to have a feeding system in place for it. adds (minor enemies called morsels) would drop down from the ceiling, and the Glob might kill them and use them to heal. to prevent this you have to kill the enemies before it does, so not only do you have to focus on taking it down, you also have to keep the number of morsels at a constant low.

just my thoughts on what could make for interesting bosses. those and some kind of giant jellyfish creature for an ocean planet. (even though jellyfish freak me the hell out)

I would love to fight an Amigara Horror.
I loved playing CataDDA and finding out there was a reference to this and that it was an extremely difficult boss fight.
"@ : Why bother fighting the Horrors, if they're that bad and I can't even move around freely???"
If your intelligence wasn't high enough, they could paralyze you(the message above), and then did damage out the butt because it would stack.
During the fight, you couldn't move away from the fault for 20 turns, but if 20 turns passed you wouldn't get a reward, also you couldn't use guns on them due to how they could easily avoid bullets, and had to be fought with explosives or good old melee(But considering you couldn't move away from them, you were more than likely to blow yourself up, forcing you to have to melee it, though i would imagine flamethrowers to be pretty effective).

Edit: Also, there is like 50 things from the SCP wiki i would love to fight.

I told my little brother (he's seven) that the man who's making Starbound is looking for boss ideas, and as someone who is eagerly awaiting the time when he can watch his big brother play Starbound he decided he'd come up with an idea himself. So, good men and women of the Starbound forums, I pose to you his idea.

In his own words: A creature with a dragon head, a human body, a snake tail, humans for arms and houses for legs.

Please, please; save your applause for the artwork I meticulously created.

That is actually quite diabolical. I envision that the humans he's using as appendages once lived in those homes he's using as legs/leg armor. Quite an evil creature.
