Block placing should have a 1-2 second delay before "setting" in...

Or perhaps, have this only be the case when using the MM. have shift toggle be instead 2x2 using MM or 1x1 using hands. I'd be ok with that. (with your idea as is too, i mean)

That would slow down building though, what if I was building a roof on a house, and I was walking on it, I have to wait that extra time to let it set before I could walk on it.

Waiting an extra second or two vs broken game mechanics.

Every game mechanic in SB can be nitpicked. Im just trying to propose a way to balance a broken one. Im sure there are many ways that building could be easier, but proper game mechanics prevailed. this would just be one of those cases- if they were to consider it.

I know what you mean though, yeah it is broken just being able to box everything in instantly and cheesing the game. I wouldn't mind something like a set time for any creature to touch it, but if I walk into it or on it, it acts as normal or something. That way you can't box enemies in (unless they aren't moving I guess) and it doesn't slow down the people who like to build. Using it to explore becomes obsolete after a little while anyways, what with all the tech that allows you to jump and fly

What if it worked exactly the same way as it does now, but for X seconds after a block has been placed, monsters are able to smash through and break them.
X could be tweaked to whatever feels fair.

This would still allow you to build as easily as before, but would prevent monster boxing.

One more difference with terraria is that, in terraria, blocks need to be touching or they won't be placed. However, in starbound, you're able to place them floating in the air.
It makes building a lot more fun, but also very easy and powerful.

That almost exactly what i was suggesting. Maybe i didn't word it clear enough?

Well, I see a subtle difference. The way you worded it, the block takes 2 seconds to phase in before it becomes solid. You could have it the other way around and basically give monsters the ability break 'fresh' blocks.

phase in was one idea (if it was easier to implement) the other idea i had was similiar to what you were saying. The blocks could have a subtle rumble animation during the "unstable" period and could be easily toppled over (into resources) if touched or broken down by a monster. But yeah- you get the gist of what i was saying. At this point i'll leave it up to the Devs to decide if its a problem.

You can't place blocks in mid air....

Terraria has the same block rules as Starbound.

I honestly have no idea why this thread should still be alive, there's no problem with blocking monsters besides the fact that you could hit them through the walls, but now you can't.

You'll have to fight monsters either way, I don't see why monster blocking is a problem.

This is a bad idea. It would drive me insane because it used to drive me insane when I played overly laggy multiplayer games for other constructive games.

I understand what you're getting at with this idea, but in the end, it would only hurt the game. True, it's possible to wall in an enemy for safety, but at the same time it would take so much control away from the player. Unless you're ALREADY planning on walling in an enemy before you even run into one, it takes a moment to gather yourself, switch to the correct block, and begin walling them in - in addition to the erratic movement of enemy AI, and the fact that they move so dang fast, it would completely eradicate the point of trying to wall them in.
If that was the only thing that would be affected, it would be an alright change. Unfortunately, it would also mess with the player in the middle of normal gameplay and it would slow down the pace dramatically, because the player would always have to wait until the platform was ready for them, rather than feeling safe with the knowledge that they can place a platform and jump immediately onto it.

My point is, it would fix one possibly exploit, but it would impede the gameplay for people who didn't even want to use cheap tactics like walling in enemies, and players would just find another exploit anyway. It's basically the exact same concept as DRM for PC games; it screws over genuine people, and those wishing to exploit it will just find a way around it anyway.
