Block placing feels a bit TOO fluid to me........

    Wait, let me rephrase that.

No enemy should be able to be blocked in through the use of the almost instant matter manipulator.

A trap of some sort with clever use of building, wires and whatnot is awesome.

But that instant block-drawing-cage to circumvent the challenge of combat while still getting the reward is not good gameplay.

Same as digging through dungeon walls and placing blocks to avoid dungeon traps.

    Challenge -> Reward.

    No challenge? No reward.

I agree here, Minecraft comes with creative mode for a reason.

On topic though, Starbound is about digging up and placing blocks plain and simple. Being able to block in an enemy sounds to me as intended like other games in this genre. Heck in others like Minecraft or Terrraria I would often block myself in to continue digging a mine/tunnel/building so that the monsters won't reach me and sometimes depending on what I am building I would block off some monsters as to finish what I am building. If blocks took a few second to materialize while I was trying to build a roof or skyway I would fall to my death and life would be sad. The best solution here has already been said and that is too simple make melee weapons unable to attack through solid walls. Perhaps even have it so that in dungeons block placement/destruction is turned off until the dungeon is complete. Actually I think that is a feature coming since I remember reading somewhere that they needed to still implement a dungeon protection block that you have to disable/break/interact with at the end of a dungeon.

TLDR: The game is still in Beta.

That second feature you speak of is already planned for this game just not implemented yet

Yes but then its no longer a game is it, its just a 3D art program.

No 'by-hand' built structure in minecraft is impressive to me since its impossible to prove whether said person did indeed do it all by hand. Do you see what I mean?

I hope Starbound doesnt just become a 2D art program :p

Sure.. let it be moddable for people who want to do that, but dont make a 'creative mode' in game, kinda spoils it for me :(

ah yes... Director Mode or Dungeon Master (ala Neverwinter Nights) mode that Tiy spoke of does sound interesting :)

    But thats different :p

The thought of having a one-time base defence which is actually super-compressed water...enemy players approach with their guns and FWOOSH, water unleashed.

I'd like to see how the game feels when hitting through walls is removed first. I'll probably still side with keeping it as-is, since it would otherwise impede on creativity in a sandbox game.

It doesnt really matter if you remove hitting through walls, the real problem is people boxing off mobs and just ignoring them.

I feel deja vu, like threads like these have been appearing monthly since this forum has been made.. We'll see what the developers have in mind ^-^

But the HUGE difference is that now we have access to the game and have far more information with which to continue the discussion, the topic is still relevent especially now the community has exploded in size.

I think the manipulator needs to feel a bit more snappy when placing things.

What about creating a "no-place zone" surrounding hostile mobs, so you can't place blocks right on top of them. Not just agro'd mobs, but ones which will agro if they see you. It doesn't have to be a large area, just a few blocks around, so that caging is possible but challenging.

Also, matter-manip's range seems a bit large. It's nice for building, but seems to easy to use in exploration/combat.

(Pardon if someone suggested this, the threads getting long)

I think having unstable blocks is fine without removing the ability to build.

I'm more concerned for exploration, since I drop blocks to jump on quite often and would rather not wait 10 (or so) seconds to use them. Also, what about sand or books which fall into place? How do you account for dropping a ton of sand, since the cpu use on a 10 second timer would start getting grossly high.

Aaand, I'm not suggesting limiting building, just building directly around mobs. If blocks are unstable they'd break if placed that close anyhow. I generally have abused the mob-trapping before combat has started, where I place blocks around mobs from the other side of a wall. It's cheap, but you can take on mobs of any level.

10 seconds is way too long. I was thinking more like 1-2 seconds. Long enough to prevent you from running up to creatures and blocking them in or "flying" around like iceman, but short enough time to use it to get around the environment and make quick shelters from tough enemies (as long as you give yourself 2 sec )

    Here's another easy solution:

If a mob "sees" you placing a block (you place it while in combat with it), said mob is able to break it. Simple as that. You place a block, it can break through.

This way, mobs can't just trash your house since they consider it part of the environment, but if you try to wall them in they will break free.

If you're trying to change the Matter Manipulator because of its mechanics when adventuring, change those mechanics, not the Matter Manipulator in general.

It's a sci-fi future. They have the technology for ranged terrain placing in a fluid fashion.

Easy solution: when switching to a block, have a delay before you can place it. Say the device is warming up it's avian crystal/charging it's capacitor who cares, but that delay would prevent fast cheese.
As for on-going cheese, or pre-emptive cheese, you can't remove that without removing the ability to build, effectively.

that and in fact I would like the ability to build traps and so on ^^
