I.E, Dirt is weaker than steel, so a small explosion would break Dirt and nothing to steel.

So I can lob grenades everywhere, and not blow up my house.

It's based on a durability scale, such as 1-100, 1 being weakest, 100 being bedrock strength (Unbreakable). The higher the durability, the longer it takes to destroy with a tool (Each durability level has a set base time of harvesting. Tools will lower [Or increase?] the time it takes). Higher durability also means immunity to destruction by other items (Explosions).

Durability would also in most instances, will effect how easily they are displaced. You won't displace 100 durability, but 15 is OK.

This sounds like something that will be/is in the game... It would be a bit weird if it took 1 second to break dirt and 1 second to break the hardest metal...

Hmm I think it was actually pretty balanced in minecraft.. you can only mine things so fast until everything is instant...

If there were a durability scale, it would provide more protection, so that is always a good thing to have instead of building a huge lava pool beside your lovely display of flowers and plants.
I am thinking the most rare ore could possibly be unbreakable unless only you decide to, you could possibly add that feature some way. Maybe you could somwhat merge to items together so you get the good look as well as the tough skin so you won't get harmed as much. E.g: Titanium and wood, they both create a stronger version of wood. There could be some text saying the durability so you can see how high or low it is.
This idea is very good, I would of never thought of this.

Or you could just harvest the procedurally generated titanium trees which grow with great strength and hold the sky up.
That planet will be reaped of it's supplies...

Why not have allows and mixtures?
Say, you have a wood house, but you use a rocket launcher as your main weapon, and you don't want to have a stray rocket chunk out 1/4 of your house.

Maybe you can give wood steel support rods at a crafting table, giving it extra strength, but it still looks like wood.

See, this is a great idea!
Edit: But I still want both.

Really... what is the purpose of this post? Are we grasping at straws here to be philosophizing about block durability? That some blocks should be destructible and some shouldn't? It seems like there are practically no real theories or ideas - we're just being redundant and obvious now.

Thank you for using specific examples and showing us how to act on this conversation.
If you don't like the thread you don't have to post in it, that just brings it up in the list.
I actually want some blocks to not blow up, because not everything just blows up.
