Dear chucklefish, you're making a game about space and yet no mentioning of black holes! one of space's main feature!

Blacks holes feel alittle OP and they could easily destroy planets you may like, Have no fear I thought of a way to make it more efficient!

I remember somewhere you guys mentioning "star system events" along with "planet events", well you could have a special star system where only one or two planets are circling a black hole, and if you land on the planet, its a special planet.

The only diference between planets are this one has a black hole, not a moon or sun in the background, and as you walk /explore, the world is being torn apart, pretty much like your sand engine, accept up. The planets would have a timer before collision with the black hole, and the goal of these planets is to loot as much loot as possible in the time frame. These planets will have more and rarer loot on them.

By the time the timer gets low, it will flash, indicating you should return to your ship and GTFO. if your too deep undergound, its time to get to the now ruined and dug up surface and than get to your ship. If you fail to return to your ship everything on your character is lost, and you are "cloned" on your ship... naked. The planet would be no more.

HOWEVER if you succeed to return to your ship, you should be greeted with a pretty cinematic of the loot fest planet being swallowed by the black hole.

Basically, these planets are event planets and act as a "Loot or get looted" mini game.

This is pretty cool and I think it would be really fun to have to rush to loot a planet. Also having the ground being ripped up underneath you sounds rad.

Good idea. We have a choice to do : have rare blocks but maybe die or do anything. Really nice, i like !

I like the idea but not this part: "These planets will have more and rarer loot on them." because i know most of the time i try to search for a black hole planet to get rare loot, and if this is the only source of getting "more and rarer loot" everyone will end up grinding them.
Loot should be shared equally over many aspects of the game so people get encouraged to play with everything around, since it's a sandbox game.
Some special effects or "unique loot" you might get there is cool for me tho, i also like the idea behind a "timed mission target".
But since the currency is some kind of "material" for the 3D Printer, you could might loot something like a chance booster (which you also can get from some other activity) to craft items.
Or a "Prismatic" Material, which can replace something different like a rare something for an item, like a "joker" card.

I think a timer would not be suited very well to starbound's atmosphere, how about a measure of the planet's structural integrity, that decreases at a semi-constant rate?

I'm with Bobo, and the whole lootfest thing seems like it'd just be abused and farmed to get all kinds of rare gear so I don't like the sound of that.

I like the idea, but I don't think there should only be rare loot. That way you have people racing through trying to find rare stuffs and they realize they wasted their time and gas to just get some common loot. That way you don't have the whole farming issue.

Hm. I don't really know, its hard to decide between a.) it's cool, would be fun and a challenge or b.) it would be annoying if you got a planet you like and know it's going to be blown up.
Not to mention that black holes are THAT rare in space, a few years ago not everyone even believed in them. The chance of finding a black hole are close to that to find a football in theatlantic ocean. I don't want to start a discussion about astronomy, so nevermind the rarity of black holes.
The point that REALLY disturbs me is: a black hole has either to be really small to hold two suns, or they would have to cycle so fast around them that it would be a real chaos. Even if you think of black holes as something common, finding one of the right size would be hard. And this one with one or even two or more suns cycling around would be even harder. I don't know, sounds a bit strange for me.
But i like the idea of a challenge. Maybe think a bit through it and you could work out something. But for me it would be important to have a possibility of avoiding them if it proves to be no fun.

I don't think the point is to be realistic. And it would make sense that these black holes would be rare especially if the whole point is for looting.

I think that would be cool but shouldn't have any special loot. Maybe just make the planet fall apart so you have to dig less?

My Idea wirh black holes is, that some star-systems have a black hole instrad of a star.
Planets in these systems would be extremely cold and they would be a mid to end-game feature because monsters on those dark and cold planets would be powerful and strong.

This is also more realistic as black holes are massive dead stars.
Flying into a black hole would result in death and the ship being destroyed except if you have a specific item that lets you use the black hole as a portal or to accelerate to ridiculously high speeds.

Black holes should be medium-rare and have a higher gravity

I don't think flying into black holes would be a feature, as long as they're relatively rare some sort of planet system centered around a black hole could be cool, as long as that's something that's actually possible. The lootfest idea is okay too, though that would be better as a mini-game or some kind of PvP mode where you rush to get the most artifacts or something.

Wormholes and blackholes could both be really interesting to add to the game in some way.

Yes, but in astronomy, and I know you said you don't want to discuss this, black holes come from stars. Starbound is probably 1000-2000 years progressed in the future. Stars could have collapsed in this time period (although in real life, it takes years to finish this transition), therefore more black holes. But then, they could turn to nebulae, also.

I have an idea for this if it is put into the game instead of just having rare loot maybe a small percentage like a 5% of having more rare loot so people will not always be risking there time with planets like this and if they do actually put black holes into the game i think another cool feature would be mass effect generator so your ship will be unharmed by the black hole so you can travel through it or somthing or maybe even massive mass effect generator put on key locations of a planet to stop it from hurdling twords the black hole in the first place but of course these generators would be way end game.

Sounds very well-thought out and a fun thing on the side to "change up" the game play. But since the player 'beams' from planet - to - spaceship, wouldn't it be as easy as clicking a button on the side of the screen to escape the event and being swallowed by the black hole? Maybe we could put in a special way the player has to get back to his ship to make it more risky?
