Just thought I'd post this, Tiy has announced that there are almost 1,000,000 combinations of creatures, which is absolutely amazing, but then he goes on to say: 'not including unique colouring'. Which, let me tell you now, means that there will be absolutely billions and billions of combinations including unique colouring...

The reason I'm posting this is because: Say there are 4 different parts of a creature that are randomized, e.g. the Starbound random generator generates different arms, legs, heads, and bodies for each creature. Now think, if Tiy says there are almost 1,000,000 possibilities, that means there are about 31 different arms, legs, heads and bodies...

To calculate the total amount of combinations (including colours), you simply have to do this: There are 31 different possibilities for each limb (or body part or whatever), and there are (on computers and consoles) 16581375 different colours. This is because you have 255 shades of red, blue, and green. 255x255x255 is 16581375, so this means that if you, for instance, want to count how many possibilities of arms there were, you would have to do 31x16581375, which is 514022625. Now, if you want to calculate every possible outcome of creature the randomiser could create, you would then do 514022625x4, which is 2056090500!

So this means that if there are almost currently 1,000,000 possibilities of creatures without unique colours, there are over 2 billion possibilities of creatures with unique colours.

And if creatures had the possibility of transparent colours, that would mean that there are 524,303,077,500 possibilities. Wow.

Now before you comment, remember that there probably won't be this many creatures that can be created, this is only assuming that every creature has the possibility of every colour and transparency, and there are no pre-set colours for certain creatures, which there will be.

But anyway, I'd just thought I'd point this out.

    wow, that numbers are... big...

I like the fact that you can capture those generated "animals". This way chances are that EVERY Starbound player will have a 100% unique pet. This also goes for the weapons. I would hate to see everyone run around with the exact same pet or weapon in multiplayer, just because it is the strongest.

right now at this moment... well about 1 year from this moment theres some guy running a site loosing his damn mind trying to figure out what hes going to claim is the "most powerful monster/pet/weapon" in the game.

I'm hoping that there will still be distinguishable races and species, and not just caves full of space sausages with diapers for feet.

And next to that guy, gorilla's with trumpets for hands.

Let's not forget the mech that's piloted by a sunflower.

I sure hope that the devs arent trying to see EVERY SINGLE ONE of these. Sure some wont look right however if there are supposed to be 524,303,077,500 kinds of creatures.

How do you randomize weapons? Even if you could, most generated weapons will look disfigured and crazy.

<x-adam1234-x> tiy do you know if you added a different type of weapon, would it create loads of alterations of it?
    <@Tiy> sort of x-adam1234-x yeah
<x-adam1234-x> so that kind of makes any updates you add to the game more worthwhile
    <@Tiy> well
<@Tiy> guns are built from pieces
<@Tiy> barrels, butts and.. middle bits
<@Tiy> so if i add a new gun, cut it up into those 3 pieces
<@Tiy> it will potentially be combined with every other existing piece
<@Tiy> for thousands more new guns
    <x-adam1234-x> awesome
<@Tiy> not to mention all the randomisation on stats and whatnot
<x-adam1234-x> kinda like with terraria and certain stat changes
<@Tiy> nah this is very different
<@Tiy> the gun is built from the ground up
    <@Tiy> think borderlands
    <x-adam1234-x> oh ok :p
<x-adam1234-x> a question for the guns: Can you just find random guns or are you made to find the parts?
    <@Tiy> you find guns
    <@Tiy> not parts

<Dtb290> Isn't it pretty much the same system with monsters, Tiy?
<Dtb290> Adding a couple pieces adds thousands of new ones? xD
<@Tiy> we're looking into that now actually
<@Tiy> we have some predesigned monsters
<@Tiy> and those monsters are modded
<@Tiy> and given different colours, attributes, etc
<@Tiy> as well as some graphics changea
<@Tiy> but I want to see if it's possible to build one from the ground up as we're doing with guns
<@Tiy> I've got george experimenting with it
<XG_the_Toaster> building... monsters? spawning new species randomly from different "parts?"
<@Tiy> yeah I'd like to do that
    <XG_the_Toaster> wow, nice
<@Tiy> its mostly a question of whether or not I can make it work without every monster looking completely ridiculous
<Dtb290> Its kinda how I always saw it.. the majority of monsters being made from, like.. head/chest/leg areas, and a few pre-made things like bad moon. o.o
<@Tiy> theres a lot of randomisation on the monsters
    <@Tiy> but
<@Tiy> if I do it this way..
    <@Tiy> say I make 100 legs, 100 bodies, 100 heads
    <@Tiy> thats 100x100x100 monsters, 1000,000 monsters
<@Tiy> so making that work is a priority for me
<Dtb290> I suppose it depends on how well most pieces fit together though, tiy?
<@Tiy> yeah I think it's tough to make it work
<@Tiy> but if anyone can do it, george can

Yeah, I know... But I'm just saying, if every creature was not predefined at all- with pre-set colours and body parts, my calculations would work.

    EDIT:

And I'm hoping that there are pre-fixed colour combinations, otherwise the colours wouldn't match, and pretty much every life-form would look quite ugly.
