While I hate to use "we" with anything let me flip this on it's head because its irresistible to avoid doing so.

    - We understand that game development isn't as impossibly hard as they make it out to be.
    - We understand that ordinary people make mistakes. Then they -correct- them.
    - We understand that estimating release dates is something developers do accurately a majority of the time.
    - We understand that there are questions which they should answer, if they want a decent reputation.
    - We understand that when you say you will do something repeatedly, people expect you to do it and not lie.
    - We understand that some things that they said they would do repeatedly should not be thrown away on a whim.
    - We understand that criticism is necessary for growth in any medium. A forum is not a place for nothing but sunshine and rainbows, but discussion.

In short, we disagree. Just because you don't agree with me doesn't make you right, or me right. However there is a group that act as if anything said against the way things have been going is somehow going to ruin the forum or break the developers.. and its hyperbole, and silly.

I don't assume people aren't chill. I'm just asking them to tone down the whole overreacting over some delay in development and release date for the beta and full release. True, I do assume some parts in it but I am mostly just tired of seeing the same people complain about how CF aren't keeping their promises about the release date. It's a game in development. Get over it.

Furthermore, even if it is unrelated, there are still some people that are waiting for Namco Bandai to localize some of their Tales of games to the West. Heck, some people are still waiting for a Tales of Vesperia PS3 localization even after Namco said it wouldn't happen.

So Starbound got delayed several times? Cool story, but the world ain't gonna stop right there because you didn't get your toy. Like I said earlier in this post, patience is a virtue and I adhere to that completely. Some people just get overexcited over certain matters where it shouldn't exactly happen and that is getting annoying.

I don't want to instigate more trouble but can we stop being so pessimistic all the time and just see the good side of things. We're still getting updates, the devs are still tweeting. Some AAA games don't even get teased all that much. Sure, one or two trailers and some early gameplay video. Starbound gets daily, though it happens every two days at this time right now, updates and some devs are streaming from time to time.

We're lucky to a certain extent.

and we I feel the same about people that think that chucklefish can do no wrong. i will agree with you on one thing some people are overreacting.

Namco Bandai is not taking money from people before they release their games.

the company that published AAA games dont taking money from people before they release their games.

They aren't "taking money from people", you gave them your money of your own free will. If you aren't happy with the situation, get a refund. You're completely free to do so.

Also, if you don't agree with putting money towards something that won't be in your hands right away but instead at a later date that may or may not be subject to change, then don't do it.

Wait, are we in 2014? Don't think so. If by January 1st Starbound isn't out then you can come here and call me a stupid, overly optimistic person. But until then I think you shouldn't call the devs liars for promising Starbound to be out this year if it ain't even 2014 yet.

    Who's 'they'?

The devs aren't making it out to be impossibly hard, or they wouldn't be making the game, thinking it was impossible. They have said it is hard, and I agree with them. I hope you also believe it is hard. Which matches my point exactly.

The alternative is that you think it's easy, in which case why aren't you making a game of the scope of Starbound? Why isn't everyone?

The only mistakes I'm aware of the devs making is the release dates. They have corrected that.
You keep on ignoring the fact that publishers force devs to give release dates, and then force the release on that date whether the game is ready or not. So yes, trivially speaking, most devs meet their projected release dates. It's easy to 'accurately' hit a release date if you simply release whatever you have on that date. That doesn't mean that the game is in an optimal state on release, and most games would benefit from having several more months in development before being released. Most gamers realise this. Why don't you?
They have answered far more questions than damn near any developer I know, and this community has had answers to every reasonable question. Those that haven't been answered are because a) they are questions to which the devs themselves don't know, or b) the question itself was unreasonable. If they get a poor reputation for that, then every developer on the planet must have a worse one, because many devs don't answer any questions on their forums. I can't believe that anyone can possibly think that CF doesn't communicate with us - anyone who thinks this mustn't have had much experience at all with gaming forums.

This is the aforementioned mistake they made. It was made because they communicated too much with us (see previous point.) They should have kept a lid on release dates entirely. They are now doing that (excepting that they have said the beta is coming out this year, which it hopefully will do) which is correcting that previous mistake (see a couple of points back.)
Whim? Where do you get the idea that anything they've stopped doing has been on a whim? Ah, I see - you're making an assumption. I don't think I need to say any more than that.

I agree with this one. Where the criticism is presented in the proper context, with reasoning, it can be valuable. It's even happened here a few times. But that's not what most people who are 'criticising' are doing - they are simply repeating the same tired accusations over and over again without any basis in fact, are ignoring the dev responses which have been given on those exact issues, and are not in general giving any useful feedback. That's not criticism, that is correctly termed whining, and it is of no use whatsoever except in making this forum a thoroughly unpleasant place.

No, I don't think the whinging will break the devs, I'm sure they're more resilient than that. However, the devs hands are somewhat tied - they can't get into pissing matches with forum goers, for similar reasons as mods and admins on the forum can't. If they start responding to these whiners, it undercuts their image of impartiality, even if they have every right to do so. So, people like me, who hate to only see one side presented without response, step in to do it for them.

Once again, think of how much effort you're expending on negativity here. Is it really worth it? What's the absolute worst that happens if you don't get Starbound? You lose a few bucks. If you haven't lost more on crappy movie tickets or lousy restaurant meals, I'd be surprised. Yet, you aren't railing against those movies or those restaurants every day, are you?

And that's taking the worst case scenario - that Starbound will never ship. I don't think I need to make any argument about Starbound shipping, do I? Surely nobody can believe that the game will never ship given how far along it is.

Calris when you respond back with a short essay.. it makes me wonder if I didn't insult your wife.
You know.. instead of simply list some of the complaints people have with Chucklefish, supported by facts such as full release being pushed back and other things.

I really have to question who is "expanding on negativity", by labeling people whiners for having a different view.

They're not but the concept is pretty much entirely the same. One of the voice actors said that they did dubs for the second mystic artes of all the characters so the hype got around that a localized PS3 Vesperia would come out. What happened? It never got released and they never made it official.

Funny that you should talk about twisting other people's words because that's exactly what you're doing right now. You seem entitled to this opinion of yours pretty damn hard, but that's not the matter of this discussion now is it? NO, published AAA games don't take money from people but shops do take your money when you pre-order said AAA game so the concept is still the same.

Also, you don't have to give money to something to feel completely and utterly disappointed? You can have high hopes for something and be disappointed about it anyway. Plus, like the other one said, people that do pay for Starbound do so of their own free will. CF never told them they had to pay them or else. No, they just gave them the option of funding their project and a lot of people, myself included, have done so willingly.

I'm probably gonna hate myself for talking back to a mod in this manner when the banhammer starts accelerating towards my gormless face, but here I go anyway.

Do you really think that "cry me a river" is an appropriate response when someone is expressing criticism over the fact that the devs, in no uncertain terms may I add, stated that the game would see full release in 2013 and later going back on that? Don't think that I'm trying to tell you how to do your job, but isn't a moderator supposed to at least try to carry themselves with some degree of neutrality and try to keep the forums a civil place instead of providing pointless, snide responses to involved users?

I think you are mistaking developers for publishers, and publishers 'accurately' estimate release dates because they are in charge of making sure the product hits the shelves on that date, at the expense of the developers. The prime example being KotOR 2, there is loads of content sitting on the discs that isn't accessible in the game, because there wasn't time to get it to a playable state before release. Of course, as I've heard it the devs weren't exactly blameless in that case, but the publishers were committed to a holiday release, and a holiday release is what they got. Chucklefish currently has the luxury of being able to work on their game at their own pace, instead of having a publisher breathing down their necks. Yes, it means we don't get the game as soon, but it also means they can take the time to make sure that what we get is quality work, instead of a half-tested gotta make the deadline release.

As for coding and the timey-wimey stuff that can go on, I've not done anything professionally, but I worked on a branch of Space Station 13 for a while, and I can definitely see where the "it's hard to say how long something will take" comes from. One of the other guys was sitting there for 72 hours trying to work out why the atmospherics pipelines weren't properly sending fresh air to the station. I'd noticed ingame that some of the vents had a sprite effect going on, but others didn't. Got curious, did a bit of checking, and it turns out the problem had been that most of the vents on the map had their 'on' variable set to 0. He'd been digging through code for the past 3 days trying to fix it, and it wasn't even a code problem, it was a mapping problem. And of course there's always that project where you spend a few hours trying to get it to work, decide to sleep on it, then come back the next day and get it done in like 15 minutes using a totally different method.

Haven't really had my ear to the ground on this game to be able to comment on the repeated promises/estimates/mistakes stuff, I've only heard about that stuff from when I decided to start actually visiting the forums, instead of just having an account so I can play with the character creator.

I agree with this message, I preffer them not accomplishing with the delivery of the game in 2013, than to release a game that is incomplete, full of bugs and that the key elements of the game don“t function as they are supposed to.
