Didn't Bioware do that with SWTOR?
I felt so sad when I looked at that 'update' lol.

 

Games like that are good F2P's while others like APB reloaded are bad F2P's

 

MOBAs are generally played by tech-savvy competitive gamers who will not tolerate microtransaction abuse, and while willing to pay for cosmetics (which is all fine and well) would not be willing to play an outright pay-2-win game. So I'm not worried about MOBAs being free-to-play, because their communities are willing and able to call BS when they see it, and keep the company practices on the ethical side of things. Path of Exile is another ethical F2P game (at least for the time being), and I have no problem with their business model.

On the other hand, casual/facebook games are aimed at kids and/or non-tech people who don't understand the issues, and that's where the outright abusive practices start, like selling a $2.99 weapon unobtainable otherwise (or requiring 100 hours of grinding) and which is more powerful than any other weapon in the game. And now it starts spilling out into consoles (which many non-tech parents buy for their kids, again without understanding the issues). Mainstream companies like EA are rapidly declining from "ethical" to "unethical" F2P models, and I think this is a big cause for concern.

Companies will treat every player community as bad as the community is willing to tolerate being treated.

Any free game on the App Store that involves farming or resources has two currency systems free/paid.
Sometimes you can only get items by using the 'paid' currency

Urgh, release on the last week of classes? I'll need a will of unmeasurable strength in order to wait until after finals....

I'm glad it's happening though. I'm not going to say that everyone else shouldn't have it because of my personal circumstances, I hope everyone enjoys first day of beta release enough for me, too! I mean to say, you better, or else rainbows.

 

Actually, I'm sort of sad Terraria isn't an MMO.

It'd make a great MMO.

OBVIOUSLY, that would cause a bajillion problems, raise a gazillion issues, and probably cost several more dollars than their current budget.

You guys are making fine points about F2P games for and against them, but.. Starbound really shouldn't have a cash shop, F2P or not.

We've already paid an okay sum (I think we got off cheap for how good Starbound will eventually be and already is -- $15 for such a complete game? My friend got Terraria on sale for 2.50 for him and me, and we both clocked well over 100 hours. Starbound's even bigger! /rant) and the whole point of this game is to explore and find stuff. Not put extra money into it just to get haxz0r stuff at tier 1.

 

I very much agree... And so far, i think the only game out there, with a succesful Free 2 Play system, is Lord of the Rings Online...

You can buy alot of items from the ingame shop, mostly cosmetic... Apart from that it's the normal stuff like Exp bonus, mounts, ect... and this is ofcouse from a currency you pay real money to get...
However, ingame you can also do stuff like exploring, killing things ect, which ofcouse gives you Achivements... These achivements each have a small amount of Real Money Currency attached to them. And they also improve some of your passive abilities.
So you can pay if you're lazy... or you can enjoy the game and earn your stuff...

So far i've gotten both expansion pack to LOTRO, and i bought all of them with currency, i gained while playing... Sure it took me a little over a year to gather it, but along the way my character became stronger, in a way a payer can only achive by also going out and working his butt off, doing the same stuff... And i got 2 "free" expansions out of it... so i now have even more content, to earn even more Currency.

 

IT IS TIME.

 

I played it too and unlocked a lot of stuff doing quests for TP (Turbine Points, their RMC), including the expansion that allowed you to get a battle horse, good times! I wonder if they'll ever reach an end to the story of LOTR, it was around Rohan the last time I checked.

 

SWTOR is a very fun experience story/dialogue wise, it was made by Bioware. You don't need to spend money to enjoy it thoroughly and is therefor a bad example on your part. Also, I don't know what the purpose of you misquoting me was.

I'm currently playing Panzar, in which you can pay for just about all the equipment if you so choose or you can forge it, which takes a lot of time. The gameplay, though, is super fun and I just can't stop. I may end up paying them something just because I want to support the devs. Se la vie.

The release is 1 day late for my birthday, damn it.
