AHAahahahhahahaha rofl, that's hilarious! But it's also mean!..... I honestly don't know whether to like it or dislike it....

EDIT: Screw it, comedy over morality.

if i may, I also feel that way, F2P games tend to actually cost you a lot more in the long run if you want to be able to experience basically all the game has to offer you.

    Yes. Absolutely.

Microtransactions/microDLC skew game balance and pacing to artificially degrade the game to those not buying them, in order to motivate them to buy. They also create artificial content scarcity and motivate players to outspend each other, paying not for content but not to be outdone by someone else who paid more. There are many other reasons as well.

Just recently Totalbiscuit did a good videocast on why Microtransactions are so bad and so easily abused. Or you can read my response to someone suggesting Starbound has a "cash shop", explaining why it's a bad idea (and my reply was one of the more civil ones in that thread). ;)

It's NOT a case of "if you don't like it', don't buy it", no matter how microtransaction publishers (which used to be to the tune of Zynga and other pure F2P, but now rapidly expanding into mainstream AAA titles) want you to believe it.

"Generic MMO?" I don't think so. You can raze entire villages to the ground, decimate bandits, lead beasts into dungeons to kill off the guards for you...doesn't sound very "MMO" to me. Starbound looks to me like one of those games where the fun comes to you. All we've gotten to see so far is one whole tier, and glimpses of future techs. Don't forget that as tiers go higher, villages get bigger, creatures/items get more complex, shit happens on planets. There's a great deal that they haven't shown us yet. Think about it........

Then the lesson is, don't do PvP in a f2p game, or play a f2p game where spending money is only useful for cosmetic effects.

    In spirit of Gene's post

If thats how the game is played, play it or stop, nobody is stopping you, and nobody is forcing you to play it. Its 'free'.

I'm only saying that if it's free to play I shouldn't have to pay to have fun.

Or better yet, don't start playing it in the first place. ;)

(Hence my comment about preferring a subscription fee. A subscription may be worth it or not worth it, but microtransaction-based games are never worth it.)

Then don't spend anything and move on to the next free game.

Funny, because i've played free to play games that were totally worth it. Sometimes i've never put any money into them, sometimes i've put money into them because I wanted to. Sometimes i've played games that make me feel like I need to put money into to get anywhere, sure, but they were far from the majority (or all).. and those ones, surprise, I just stopped playing and moved on.

Either people have a really low threshold to "resist" the allure of paying for things, or they're just wildly generalising.

As Gene said, "don't start playing it in the first place"

LoL is the only game I can think of that I play which is F2P and has micro transactions merely for cosmetic skins.
F2P games that have in game content (Weapons and Armor) that can only be purchased should be frowned upon.
Sure you can continue to play the for 'free' but you will never fully experience it without handing over some cash.

Killing floor isn't an MMO but it still has the micro transactions for characters and unique weapons.
The characters I don't mind much but boy would I love to purchase the flare revolvers from the trader...

TF2, Path of Exile, Maple Story, I think Mabinogi, any other f2p MOBA that exists, and Warframe. I'm sure theres several I'm missing, still.

I'd highly recommend Warframe if you're into shooters, all weapons/characters can be purchased with money or crafted for free (well, you have to pay with your time, anyway.)

Not only that they are still in the process of 're-writing' the lore for that era it's lacking pretty badly. They'll have to really surprise me to get me back in after having played the Beta and reading into the current story line.

Guild Wars 2 is a really big one as well, and they are pushing out content faster than any other publisher at the moment.

Yeah TF2 and Mabinogi! Forgot about them.
TF2 has in game items that you have to fork cash over to get or purchase other games to acquire.
Mabinogi has the damn scooters and rebirths.
    The others I haven't played.

I'm talking about F2P's that have content such as weapons and armors anything that gives the money payer an OP advantage no matter what the free player does to defeat him.

So imagine Starbound being F2P and the only way to get certain items in Tier 10 or Tier X is to fork cash over.

If anyone wants to find a game that has mastered the cash shop, please look up 'Path of Exile'. They offer cosmetic upgrades to gear/spells and the boost to storage space for gear. It has no detrimental impact on the game and can be played completely free and experience all the content without paying a dime.
