And in doing so lose thousands of current/potential fans, probably gaining minimal.

It was a huge PR faux pas when Phil said it, why would it be different for Starbound? Especially with the current state of the fanbase.

Of course... then you have Hideki Kamiya and his twitter antics...

Someone who is gonig to research this game far enough into the forums probably has the common sense to come to a conclusion themselves, so what if they see the "bad side" of the community. wah.. wah..

Remember way back in the day when I said this thread has become nothing but ridiculous fights, and I got checked by like three different people that it wasn't like that anymore and people were actually being civil?
    Well, suck it.
    Yea.
    Wulpher was right.
And he is displaying his mastery of internet trends by adding to it.
Because that's what masters of the internet do.

It would be truly fascinating to see you in that situation. :p

    Edit:
They essentially did tell us "November or December" by saying beta in 2013! :iswydt: (Yes, I know you're really asking for a more specific date. And a serious answer is still "Maybe November" as the best estimate.)

He did actually set deadlines that he missed, several times. He didn't do pre-orders though, if he had, he may have hit the goal faster as it boiled down to basically a two man development team.

You're right that when you put yourself in the limelight you're going to be subject to criticisms, but my point is that people are equating the lateness of the game to the game itself being bad. Or the dev team being bad. Neither of these things have yet to be proven true and I think Fez is a great example of this. Phil Fish was kind of an anti-social ass during the time and didn't gain much positive support during the development. But he got the job done over time, made a fucking great game, and will be remembered for it. Indie developers don't have the resources or the PR people that big name developers do, yet they're generally the ones making the only unique, and arguably more fun games out there.

I have a feeling that if Starbound releases even two years from now that, if it's a good game, it will be worth the wait.

Yes, that's my issue. It's not the points or the people, so much as how people go about making their points.
Eh. I find that people who don't care about political correctness are no more or less honest than their nice counterparts, they just lie in more creative ways. :p
I know a lot of people who have said it sucked. Probably because they don't like him rather than anything wrong with the game itself.
I'd imagine it causes more "OMG look at what this horrible, horrible person said" angst from people that don't care about context than could ever be made up for in respect earned. But maybe that's just me. >_>
Well, like I said earlier, this is actually among the first threads people are likely to see, given that it's at the top of one of the most active subforums and there's an announcement about it and who doesn't want to talk about beta?

Actually, the 'developer communication' is how the creator of CubeWorld wanted his game to be, it's pretty good so far.

Okay? Your friends are definitely in the minority. It's largely considered one of the best indie games around. It has a Metacritic score of 91, and has many perfect scores on review sites. If you don't enjoy a game because of its developers well, I don't know what to tell you.

I don't like Orson Scott Card but I went to see Ender's Game because I love his books. The movie was great. I guess it's their mindset.

EDIT: Forgot to weigh in personally. I think Fez is really, really good. The art style and gameplay are super solid. Definitely among the best indie games around.

    Off-topic:
"Fez" is on my top list because of its deep world and hidden puzzles (most people think that game is just a platformer like "Mario" or something, lol; it has so much more inside).

Yeah, that's probably all it is. It's not my friends, just the random things I hear while on the internet. In fact some of them were on this forum, though as I said before, I suspect they were exaggerating.

The metascore (critic score) right now is 89/100 yet the user score is 6.2/10. This kind of disconnect is usually the kind you see from heavily-criticized developers (see: EA, Activition Blizzard, Squenix) which is why I suspect it has less to do with the quality of the game than people are letting on.
I keep telling myself I'm gonna buy it but never got around to it

I'm pretty sure Phil Fish is a terrible comparison to . . . anything Starbound related. That guy is massively emotionally and mentally unhinged. Great artist! But like so many great artists, he's off his freakin' rocker. He threatened to murder his former business partner, told a journalist he should kill himself, and then dramatically stormed out of the metaphorical party to pout in his metaphorical room. Or maybe his actual room. He made an awesome (if buggy) game, though! A game which literally required a new manner of thinking, and a new manner of looking at things. Something only a genius could make. And something only an absolutely crazy person could make.

I look at Starbound and I don't see anything in common with Fez. Fez was the insane, amazing, unique vision of a troubled, brilliant lunatic; it was his vision, and his alone. I look at Starbound and I see a team of enthusiastic people trying to make a really cool game that they'd like to play, and which they're going to get released into Beta as soon as they can actually get some useful data from that . . . testing (rhyme averted!). It's not going to be as mind-bendingly innovative as Fez, but I think it's pretty safe from any sort of developer-meltdown issues. It's not trying to redefine the essence of the player's reasoning. It's just "Hey, what if Terraria had multiple whole planets, and was TOTALLY HUGE, with all sorts of cool sci-fi stuff in it? Let's do that!" - much the way I think someone once said "Hey, what if we make Quake except super immersive and coherent and taking itself a little more seriously?" and Half-Life was born!

It reminds me of something Penn Jillette said: that great art is born of love; but love is unstable, uncontrollable, and unpredictable. He uses this to demonstrate why he and Teller aren't really "friends" - they may never be bigger than Jesus, but they've worked together happily for 30 years without imploding. (Apparently the Mythbusters guys are the same way!). I feel like this project has love in it, but not the crazy obsessive love Phil Fish has for things. It has friendly, sprite-based love, which is much less volatile.

What's great is that Kickstarter (et al) has now given consumers a feel for what PUBLISHERS have to endure! You agree to publish a cool game from an enterprising studio . . . and you might get Aliens: Colonial Marines. Or never get a finished product at all!

I think there was this unrealistic belief lodged in people's heads that "If only we were funding our games, we wouldn't have to deal with the delays and other problems that games suffer when published by those big evil companies!" But the fact is, when you're making a creative product, things never go smoothly, much less according to plan.

Starbound has had a bit of schedule slip, but that's normal. It's still on track to be feature-complete, which is more than I can say for, as an example, Star Command, which has been out a year and still doesn't have almost half the features listed on their Kickstarter*. Starbound is already way ahead of those guys.

*This is a totally uninformed, wild exaggeration. Still no away teams, though, so screw those guys!

This topic has had some very good comments..and then some not so good comments.

It boils down to these four camps:

    1. Take the time you need, I just want a great game
    2. I don't understand the delays, the game looks playable - release a demo
    3. People just calling for a beta because its been in dev to long, no matter the state
    4. Negative Nancy's & Know-it-alls that are perpetually complaining about everything

I know this post will rankle camp 4 (I know it hurts) and they will come back with some witty number 5 about some attack monster that apparently allowed to do horrible things even though its against the forum rules. Now, since that is out of the way (we can dream can't we??) I don't think that there is a glasshouse issue. I think camp 2 & 3 can dip into parts of 4 at times, but that is just emotional peaks and valleys and that is normal.

The problem is the folks that stay in camp 4, which degrades the flesch-kincaid level of the forum. People respond with a challenge to camp 4 and since they cannot construct a logical argument they go all red herring with their replies.

I forgot, camp 5 - The BritSpears collective (very nice)

If you patiently wait for beta, and beta comes out this discussion in its entirety would be over wouldn't it? So, stop being so very patient for beta and start being patient with people who aren't patient for beta.
