Sounds to me like you guys are really make great progress! I'm gonna take a guess and say early october for pre-order beta

"This build will likely not be ready for players because it may contain game breaking bugs." - I thought finding and reporting bugs was part of what Beta testing was....or used to be at least. I remember doing beta testing back in the 90's, although people got paid back then oddly, but nowdays it appears that it went from helping out with the game development to yelling when the beta is to get early access.

 

Yeah people who bought the hard copy of Terraria (20$ USD) got a carrot item when they started the game to give yourself a pet bunny. People who got it from Steam did not.

Yeah there has been discussion on that. Betas have definitely changed and it seems that people more or less expect a beta to closely like the finished game with very few bug that will break the game or cause problems other than minor glitches. I think it's kinda the trade off for free open testing versus paying a firm or freelancers to test it, you have to make your game more complete because many of your testers may not know how to properly submit bugs. Just my opinion.

You also got some other nice "Feelies" (tangible objects). The only real annoying thing is the hard copy didn't come out till a while after the steam version so you would likely have the 10$ USD steam version as well.

Sadly, this is because the fan base for this game still isn't too huge. Every game that wasn't already popular started out with a community just like this one, but as time goes on, it gets much worse.

 

Betas are indeed used to find bugs and other things that the devs did not intend, however, the devs currently know about these bugs. They don't need beta testers to find these game breaking bugs for them since they know they exist. Once all of these are squashed and they finish adding in the content on their Beta Road Map, then they may look at a beta release to find any bugs they did not catch. Chucklefish does not need any beta testers other than their own staff at this moment.

I can feel beta getting closer. Monday's progress update was really, really optimistic. I'm hoping for early September/Late August, but that might be a little unrealistic. Still, I'm pretty sure by early to mid October, we should have this.

 

This makes it seem it is very unlikely that the beta will come out pre-Insomnia festival (late August):

Unless there is a major communication breakdown between the devs and insomnia (leading insomnia to wrongly believe there will be not public beta before their festival), that pretty much precludes beta before September.

 

Tyi has stated if they manage to get a beta finished before it they will give it to the people who preordered and insomnia goers will just get to play the public beta free of charge.

 

Certainly, that quote is from the thread I started, but given the tone of Deman's tweet it seems the devs believe it will be post Insomnia. Unless the devs are not on the same page re: beta release

 

Yeah, I don't think they feel it will be done before then, thus why they would say to Insomnia way back in the conventions planning stage that they will get the exclusive preview. The devs really don't seem to know just when they will have their TODO list complete enough to release. It does seem they are leaning towards post insomnia though. Only time will tell though.
