It is true that no one world in Starbound can compare to the single world of Terraria, but this is one of the key differences in the designed between the two games. Terraria is about exploring one world for a huge number of hours, and thus, that world must be very interesting. Starbound however is about exploring many worlds with only an hour or two spent on most worlds.

Nah, just jokin. I get that you may not like it but I respectfully disagree.

Right, but in effect it just makes each of those worlds tedious because there's very little variation on any given one. Most don't even have an hour or two worth of stuff to keep me occupied shy of delving (pointlessly, at this point in beta) into the endless samey expanse of the underground. But the cavern generation in this is drastically inferior to Terraria's.

Don't get me wrong, I do like Star Wars. I even think the prequels were great as far as expanding the universe even if they were horrible in the storytelling department. But single-biome planets are just dumb, when you're talking habitable worlds. An all-forest or all-desert planet doesn't make much sense. For barren moons it's obviously more believable.

That explains why one of the coolest things I found in Starbound was a Snow biome world that seemed to have half the world covered in sand with palm trees. I didn't take off my winter gear for fear of death but it was odd.

and found a lab room underground. Yeah, have fun with that thought.

Terraria Vs Starbound (at the moment of course starbound is still beta)

-Starbound planets all feel the same aside from palette swaps and a few minor things like gravity and puddles of poison. One planet has cotton candy trees another has eyeball trees, yay.
-Terraria worlds have biomes that are all extremely different, feel different both mechanically and visually.

-Starbound has basically only 4 types of enemy. All flying enemies are the same aside from the projectiles they shoot. Random pokemans are extremely bland and are basically only different in the projectiles (or lack of) that they shoot, move the same speed and give the same drops. Bosses are lame and only drop the item you need to get to the next tier. Npc's are uninspiring.
-Terraria has dozens upon dozens of enemies that act very different and require different strategy (even if you don't count pallet swaps). You are encouraged to kill all types of enemies because many have important drops.

-Starbound has extremely linear on the rails progression with no real reason to explore more than 1 planet per tier just to complete the forced objective to advance to the next.
-Terraria has a few gates (like the wall of flesh) but has dozens of different paths you could take in equipment development different, orders you could explore the biomes in. You are heavily encouraged to explore all biomes, kill monsters, bosses and find events. In other words the game rewards you nomatter what path you choose, encourages diverse play and makes dozens upon dozens of viable ways to progress.

-Starbound has worse itemization aside from furniture that you copy from the pixel printer.
-Terraria has tons of armors/weapons with both vertical progression and horizontal that have tons of stats and set bonuses, accessories that change the game so much and actually vary person to person based on preference etc. You obtain these items from every method possible, random world drops, bosses, monsters, buying them from npcs and mining.

Don't get me wrong, I have high hopes for what Starbound can become, but right now it cannot even come close to touching Terraria.

I prefer Starbound over Terraria now because Starbound has a consistent style whereas with new Terraria updates a lot of the sprites look out of place and it haunts me forever.

I've never noticed much in Terraria that doesn't fit with its general art style. Sure some of the newer sprites might be a bit higher quality but it's not as drastic as say, Outland vs. Pandaria in WoW. Or Tauren vs. Pandaren models, for a smaller scope of difference.

terraria is literally too ugly for me to play.

plus the controls feel horrible, and i don't get this "polished combat" argument, i found it such a clunky chore i have to force myself to keep playing after 2-3 monster encounters

    0/10

Terraria's art style, to me, is more clearly defined and informative to the player than Starbound's. I pretty much always know what I'm looking at on Terraria, whereas stone vs. blaststone isn't easy to spot if you aren't paying pretty close attention. Among a few other things. Also the controls aren't that far removed from Starbound's so I'm going to assume you're just trolling, anyway.

then you are just incredibly unintelligent.....

starbound and terraria are almost identical except for the fact that you can use the right mouse button in starbound

as far as a more polished combat system its pretty self explanatory

in starbound you have 2 weapon choices 2 handed swords or guns yes there are other joke weapons but unless you want to take unnecessary hits or fight while physically impairing yourself those are your choices
of these 2 choices you have 3 two handed sword effects which never change and a few different gun varieties that function in various ways but remain the same throughout the game.

in terraria you have multiple variable melee weapons
short range 2 handed swords function similar to 2 handed swords in starbound but there are multiple effects they can have along with each "tier" of two handed sword having its own unique feel be it length diameter or added effect
you have spears which surprise function like spears in that if i so choose i can stab into the air to hit things floating or jumping above me
and boomerangs which each function differently than the next be it projectile speed distance or number in the air at once giveing each weapon its own unique flavor even though the variety is technically less.

there are also ranged weapons which break down into 2 catagories
bows which use arrows for which there are multiple projectile types each with their own projectile effect

and guns which although varied in and of themselves including burst fire single fire machine gun style also feature a multitude of different ammunition types each with their own pro's and cons along with special particle effects.

and finally there is a third type of combat which is magic and while there are a few "upgraded" versions of spells that perform a similar function at a higher level there is a large multitude of magical options each with their own effect from orbs that attack on their own to bouncing projectiles to large aoe explosions to hovering static objects that pour damage down constantly and autonomously to beams that bend at angles allowing for an interesting and diverse combat experience regardless of the weapon style that you choose.

Secondly the way in which you use "accessories" similar to techs in this game allow you to perform a wide variety of combat maneuvers chosen by the player specifically to suit their gameplay each with their own pros and cons allowing you to handle different situations differently depending on your particular preferences along with being able to have 5 different effects activated at one time so if i so choose to dodge and jump high i don't have to make a pained decision in my inventory before hand i can do both again making the combat more engaging.

Edit: i forgot about flails cause i hate them but they are a 4th melee style that allows for even more choices.

To me it's only the new 'community' updates where half the damn sprites are fanmade. Some look cool, but a lot appear either out of place or rushed, or they're on an odd angle.

I agree with Splift and lilheartless. SB loses to Terraria if you look from Terraria perspective as if gameplay, mechanics and goals vise. But what about SB perspective, especially after all: "SB is totally not a Terraria in space!"? There is no "SB perspective" yet. The game just don't feel like something solid. It feel like a play something build on Terraria with a handful of gameplay mechanics slapped to it. Take random world and items generation. Great idea by itself. But, not only right now it's dull and unrewarding to explore it don't mix well with Terraria-style crafting progression (especially armors). And crafting itself? A Terraria copy, so much of wasted possibilities to make a great, interesting Sky-fi crafting. So unless Devs still have a lot on their shelf SB could lose to Terraria.

And taking ideas from another tread and speaking literally - SB gameplay have a few carrots, but to many sticks.

Since I found out about Starbound I have watched a lot of Terraria LP's. Never played Terraria before and decidet to buy it for Starbound-patch-waiting purposes.

I don't know but I am absolutely not into Terrataria. I can't put my finger on it but there is something I don't like about it. Not even gameplay relatet, more the optical presentation. It doesn't look bad at all but there is sth. I don't like about it what keeps me from playing it. On the other hand, I love the optics of Starbound. I really can't describe it, it's really odd.
Maybe the fact that interesting stuff in Terraria mostly happens underground is one thing. I like to explore the surface in SB, finding villages and stuff.

On the other hand it's needless to say that Terraria has a way more complex crafting system at the moment. I hope that Starbound will improve on that in the future. The amount of craftable weapons in Terraria is just enormous. I'm really looking forward to the developement of SB in this matter. Exiting!

Such Starbound hate, people do realize it's in Beta phase ONE, right? Also, yes Terraria's player character is ugly IMHO.
I'm fine with Terraria, but I just think it gets boring cause there's not much to do once you've gotten endgame. Building is... bland, in my opinion.

    Post above yours.

    So lemme get this straight:

We're comparing a game where major parts of the core content haven't yet been implemented, where the official release date is a long ways off...

...with a game that's been released, had plenty of content added for two years post-release, and has a sequel in the works.

This isn't even the Civ5 < Civ4 complaint or the SC < SC4 complaint. There's jumping the gun and there's jumping the gun.
