?

How big do you want thedownload size of starbound to be?

  1. 5GB+

    35.8%
  2. 4-5GB

    11.3%
  3. 3-4GB

    12.0%
  4. 2-3GB

    19.2%
  5. 2GB-

    52.9%
  1. Yeah, start playing now, make some big maps and explore and it will take couple of megabytes.
My MC was taking about 100Mb after a month or two or play.

Yep, however they are making suppositions on the size of the release version of the game, not the size of a fully moded/running data/save directory so, like you said, 300 to 600 max may prove not so far from truth in the end x).

Sorry dude but I started minecraft in 2009 at the alpha. I know that after qhile it takes space but I mean the vanilla minecraft that tou get in a zip, exe or jar file. And yes my minecraft is big I have around 22 mods I have big maps I have world edit and such... So yea I know how minecraft can get big.

Any game that uses procedural generation is going to start of small and generate relatively huge savefiles...

Also minecraft vanilla with nothing added is round about 600kb from what i remember (probably bigger now, but still)

Probably would be a realistic size of a few MB, I don't think it'll be a TB. So i'm not overly worried and I don't think people need to be unless they have a window 98 or a PC that only runs on KB

On windows the minecraft.jar (not the launcher or anything just the jar) is about 4.51 mb as of 1.6.2 vanilla. It used to be only about 1 mb prior to release when they started adding more and more things. Yes most the size comes from the maps/saves since the game only has to have that data on how to run the game parts while the save files have to remember what everything you have seen is and where it is and a ton of other thing.

I'm pretty sure that it's gonna be around 1.5 GB's!

Well, let's see, cutscenes and music will probably take up the most space when being installed... followed by textures and effects, then the actual procedural scripts (which will be relatively tiny)
At an estimate i'd say it'll be less than 300mb when finished...

  10. And with a powerful generation engine it would be capable of unique stuff!

    Do people even read?

    1) People are saying 100mb~500mb or something of the sort. Does it NOT just say more than 487mb?

    2) 5GB = MOAR CONTANT YEY. That would be really.. over the top. Do you honestly think everybody has the space/bandwidth/speed to do that, even IF they added that much content? Some people wouldn't even be able to download it then. As you might notice, there's quite a couple of 13~15 year old's here. Do you think their parents would allow them to do that? I mean, chances are, if somebody 13~15 years old is on the computer, it'd be their parent's computer, or something of the sort. Eugh. Forget it. I refuse to rant any longer on that.

But really, do people even read the posts in the thread, or do they just click on it and reply? We got a response from Ordona, showing what Omni said, yet you STILL go on with ridiculous amounts? Frankly, I understand that you're bored and such, hyped/excited/whatever, but please at least be logical.

I hate to be such a jerk, but come on.

Disk space is *mostly* irrelevant given the amount of data hard drives can hold. Also speed and bandwidth are the same thing.

  14. I think he may have been referring to bandwidth as a usage cap (e.g. 60GB/month).

    Some updates:

We split up the program from the assets into entirely separate directories.

Full suite with symbols enabled, including all tests is 1.6GB, with no assets.
Just the starbound executable with symbols is sitting at 249 MB, the server is at 170 MB.

Without symbols enabled in release mode (them debugging symbols are huge...) the full suite is: 155MB
    Starbound: 22MB
    Server: 17MB

    Assets are sitting at 669MB

So if we were to ship today the game would be around 550MB when fully compressed for download. And around 750MB uncompressed.
