I think it would be a good idea for some of the larger gas giants to have platforms or platform cities for ships to land on or teleport to. I think this would also provide a means to create another unique style dungeon that could be a hybridization of both outside and inside on possibly the underside or bowels of the cities or platforms. I couldn't find anyone else who had made this suggestion so if it has been made already sorry. I would like to support it if it has.
If they had small, useless lumps of rock, or crystal being suspended on the air currents (as opposed to resource rich asteroids); maybe chunks of organic material, or gas-bag plants, it'd provide a meaningful starting point to build off. Of course I don't see such worlds being very useful except for those hell bent on building cloud cities ;p
Maybe there could be dense gas cloud material that you could harvest with a vacuum tool or something? Like hydrogen or helium and the like, to be used in the creation and fueling of certain objects. If you collect helium, for instance, you could use it to create a dirigible type vehicle you could use to explore said gas giants, or anywhere really. Besides, sky dungeons are rife with danger and deadly pits. They'd be very interesting and exciting setpieces to explore.
Something like that or along those lines. I am a little surprised this wasn't in the plans already being that the devs seem to be Star Wars fans.
There was another suggestions thread outlining how it would be nice if in late game you were only able to fuel your ships from gas giants. I think this would be a good addition to that idea. Imagine: You have been traveling the sector in your large ship. Now you need fuel. So you have to enter low orbit to this planent and barter for fuel to continue your journey across the stars
Yes, I know , sorry! I think I would be great it the city/platform was based on mining/harvesting fuels obtained from deep in the he gas giant. There could be a tube leading deep into it's core (liquid level?) sucking up the fuel, acting a bit like a drill bit in conventional mining. The non-mining parts of it could be for processing the fuel (like crude oil's fractional distillation) and for providing services to tourists and miners. It could be a bit like (or a variation of) the new(ish) outposts.
