In minecraft, you are more or less obligated to get wood as your first resource for building, in terraria, pretty much the same applies, so here's the suggestion: Don't make only a single obvious way to begin the game, it should not always begin with the same thing over and over again, of course, in minecraft you can dig a cave and stay there instead of building a wooden house, as well as in terraria, but in both of them, you depend on that resource for a while, at the begining. So my idea is to let the player take different paths to ascend the power tiers instead of escalating each time he or she starts a new character through an ore based ladder which after a couple tries gets boring and predictible.

I'm pretty certain this is already an aspect of the game really. You choose a race, and each race has its own introduction.
Well, there are just some things you can't avoid Look around you, i guess your house i also mostly made of Wood and Stone.. maybe a bit of iron. But personally in both Terraria and Minecraft, i always dug a house in the ground, so i could use the ground above for Gardening
Yeah yeah, i didn'0t mean that, i meant what Insanitor meant, in terraria you can make your house out of wood, or dig it in the ground, i suspect that in Starbound the houses will be made out of wood too, but why not make a tent out of some leaves instead? and I don't mean it on the building aspect, since it's logic to use wood as a resource for basic housing and stone for a little more advanced buioldings, I meant it in the items and beggining the game process, in minecraft, the easyest way of begginibg your game is getting wood, wood is required for more or less everything, why can't I make something else, like kill monsters and buy weapons instead of crafting them, or do a quest for my weapons, crafting is obligatory, and in minecraft it focuses arround a single item, wood, in terraria you can use different materials, such as hellstone, but you still need wood as a starting resource, and you can begin the game in a single way if you want to do it effectivly, which is by punching wood, that's the start of mostly all minecraft games, routine: get wood, craft tools, get more wood, build and mine. It varies very slightly every time you play it.
It is already known that the beginning of this game depends of the race, there is the Intro. But you start in your race home planet in some intro tutorial to the game, so it's not like Minecraft it instant puts you in the game and you must figure out everything alone. Hopefully!
