War bears and wolves would be awesome mounts. I also posted in the Planets and Environments (http://community.playstarbound.com/index.php?threads/a-viking-planet.2804/) explaining some of my ideas for a planet. War bears could be equip armors and other things like miniature catapults. Bears could automatically attack hostile targets that get close to the front of it. I think there should be different types of mounts. Passive mounts and War mounts. Passives of course could include horses or anything else that wouldn't "fight" back. Then there would be War mounts, which can deal damage or offer damage support. Passive and War mounts could have passive skills like maybe a minor health regeneration buff. Or maybe armor buffs. Things like that.
Bears do fit. I mean, just because it's sci-fi it doesn't mean everything has to be "robo", especially since you'll be exploring planets, each one with each native creatures. What doesn't fit, however, is the mounted catapult (I mean I love catapults, but with Starbound's tech level, why not mount on the bear a plasma cannon? Or a bacon griller?). I would actually like to see some "natural" mounts, as suggested here, rather than just hoverbikes and mechs. More variety and visual styles. Also about that passive and war suggestion, I find it unnecessary to make a distinction, every mount can defend itself, especially if you equip it with mounted weapons (although in this case it would me more like YOU are the one triggering the weapon). And about passive skills, I don't know, if they are procedurally generated just like everything else I guess each mount will have its unique stats.
My friend have you ever heard of the Bear Cavalry There are many video games that have rideable and tameable bears in them, I think that there would be no problem with it here as well.
Exactly, and when I said catapults I of course meant plasma catapults ever play HALO? Them wraiths be plasma catapults to me.
No offence but, this game is based around space and such, so while yes it would be fun to have, ti simpley wouldn't be 'Sapcey" enough for the concept of this game. That's why i suggested Robo-Bears, or even better, Android Bears, looks like normal Bears when BOOM! Suprise attack. I'd name my Android Bear the Spanish Inquisition because
Were you just looking for a reason to post that? In any case Take a moment to consider that anything on a planet is in Space. Just because we are familiar with something like a bear does not mean that bears are not aliens to other species. Speaking of which, with traits, there would be thousands of different kinds of bear. I don't think you have to worry about spacey bears. On this train of thought I think it would be phenomenal to introduce things we are familiar with to the planets that we find and see how it works...
I would find it hilarious, if, with a one in a Bajillion chance, for the game to make a replica of Earth. That would be the biggest troll in this game, "OH! ALIEN SPECIES- Oh it's just a frog, OH LOOK ALIEN TREE- oh it's just a Ironwood tree" And yes, i WAS in fact waiting for the chance to post that. But who wouldn't? I mean Venosaur.
Take a close, close look at this screenshot. 'Space' does not always equal 'different, alien, unknown'. Earth is, after all, in space - not only is it perfectly feasible that there's a planet out there somewhere where conditions were favourable for evolution to take a similar tangent as that on Earth did resulting in similar creatures, but this is a game - if you stumble upon a grassy, forested planet in Starbound, it would not feel out of place for there to be bears.
Yep, exactly what I meant when I said that bears were not out of place in a sci-fi background. In fact robo-bears fell even more out of place than bears, as they do not occur naturally, someone has to "create" them (unless they become an intelligent life-form, that is). So going back to the OP, yeah, I fully support the idea of having "natural" mounts and not just vehicles, although I guess that will already be in this game, otherwise the name of this category of suggestions would not be "Vehicles and Mounts"
......... You missed my point. I MEANT that Bears while yes, they would infact fit in the context of a planet, they WOULDN'T fi anywhere else. The way the game is themed it would make much more sense for you to have Robo-Bears everywhere else. Would a Bear fit on your space ship, no, would a ROBO bear fit on your space ship, yes. But, i suppose we have to a agree to disagree. How about the Devs just add both and be done with it? And i do agree with everything else you said.
The fact you can tame animals means that there will be monsters moving between worlds to some extent, although I see your point when you say they would feel out of place. However due to the randomizer, planet may end up having species on it that are out of place to begin with. I would love it if the bears could fight for you though. Maybe you could get them weapons. Pretty sure as an American I have a Right to Armed Bears
Never thought of it that way, hmm, it would be horribly ineffecient if you went to a planet where it was eternal light, and every creature there was Nocturnal.
And anyways to start with, the whole "out of place" concept is kind of futile. There are lots of things in space that will surely feel out of place for us, yet that's only a subjective analysis, not something objective. I mean, there are planets out there made of ice with a temperature of some hundred degrees (ºC), which would feel out of place. Of course it's all because of the pressure, but my point is that "out of place" is something that WE as humans consider.
I don't think that bears would be out of place anywhere Little known fact; bears are a universal constant
And now I gotta like your post for that. On-Topic: Like Drithyl said, the argument regarding things being out of place is pretty insignificant. I support these bears =P
I had to like it for the Colbert myself now that the matter with bears is settled let us move on do ROBOT bears belong in Starbound?
