You gotta remember that Hasbro is based in America. I don't know how it goes in Japan, but I don't think having a poor representation of other ethnicities is a problem they need to deal with. I mean:

I have SEEN firsthand a negative reaction to this picture. If Hasbro made Rarity black, people here would have an issue with that. If NONE of the main six were an ethnicity other than white, another group would cry foul. Making all the characters pastel color was a painfully clear solution here. I mean, with the upside of colorful dolls.

Personally, I think they should've just done it anyway, this constant pandering to whiners is actually damaging their sales and it's a shame that they think they can't do anything about it.

 

I think it was two birds with one stone: avoid criticism about ethnicity and make the pone humans more familiar (and save time designing them, or something).

No, it isn't just an "American thing", you can find these people all over the world, and I'm getting quite tired of everyone always going on about how only Americans could ever think that way...

 

I was on about how people would be mad no matter what you did (but you're right, I was speaking more like you mentioned). Also, I've never been anywhere but the US, so it'd feel wrong to speak for anything but (and the company in question is based here). I do know there are issues of the same nature all around, don't misunderstand.

 

Heh, many of people will burn to the ground if they know, what mad ideas sometimes come to me. Oneday i got an idea to write a fanfic about communist ponies and civil war in Equestria. It's not something I would write, but you should go for it. War in Equestria is actually a pretty common trope, for one reason or another, so keep that in mind.
