Well, there's input lag and general incompetence, not to mention trolls...

 

Everyone knows it was an accident, it's just over dramatized for the fun of it. There's a whole back story and lore behind whatever happens.

Due to Red's erratic movements and propensity to bump into walls and fall off ledges, many got the idea he was a robot. Other, later on, saw him as a tormented soul bombarded by otherworldly voices.

It just so happened that the viewers selected the Helix Fossil in battle often. The people then figured it was Red who sought guidance from the Fossil in battle, his sane anchor amongst the maddening voices.

Pidgeot is the only reason the players make progress. It's absurdly overleveled because all the other Pokemon got knocked out more often. So it's clearly the archangel that guides Red.

Eevee was the split in the players' desires. Many wanted Eevee, and others wanted Lapras (you actually NEED Lapras, too, but don't tell the Eevee worshippers that). They had a full party, so to the box they went. There, fumbling controls led to Charmeleon and Rattata being released. Clearly Eevee was the Anti-Christ figure against Pidgeot. Becoming Flareon later was strangely poetic.

It's a social experiment. When they're not terrorizing each other in uniform, they're worshiping a video game item
