We've got a date for it starting at long last? About friggin' time! Seriously, it's take a ridiculous amount of time. Glad to know it's not going to end up delayed to next year or something.
I'll stick to my Novakid train, until and unless this server gets going. (I'm still working out which ship I'll try to place for my BBTS character. And which race I'll use, at the moment I'm looking at changeling because I can't make up my mind between farming, mining, banking, and exploring. And that's before I find out what my connection will be like.)
Okay, after some looking into the pony modpack (2.0.1) I noticed that not only none of the races in there currently have upgradable starships, but there's also a second ship folder for each race which are also not (reliably) upgradable. If there's another reasonably updated pony pack I'm not seeing it. A few options we've got is to either borrow and mod in other ships (preferably ones that have a full upgrade path), fix them up and make them ourselves if we've got reasonable artability and time to work on it (and probably offer said things to the pack,) or just kind of get used to either not upgrading or wind up with (probably) human ships. Personally, I'm looking through updated ship mods and other races with updated ships to either find a good one or at the very least get some ideas. In addition, if we try to make each of us have our own personal ship style, then with the way things currently run, we'd need to be able to upgrade our ships while not connected to the multiplayer server (or else it changes to something else unless our modded racial ship matches the server's modded racial ship and gets really tricky to fix.) Not sure how that'll end up working eventually when the server-side character thing is finally implemented, but it's not exactly an issue just yet.
Moddable ship? the one you can build with blocks? It opens up diversity and you can do more than just a simple ship.
Any particular ship-building mod you've got in mind? I looked around just for a little while, and found more than a few, and even a small number that are being kept up-to-date. I'm not sure if I like Super Magic Custom Island or MadTulip's highly switchable spaceship mod better. Also worth considering, will everyone want to build their own ship, or just stick to some pre-fabbed setup? (I almost like the look of that Shard Battlecruiser for a theoretical changeling, but I should probably check it on a test character first, now that I'm learning some /admin commands.)
The ship thing shouldn't be so hard. i bet @Kawa could give us a tip on how that ship works. Using it for a moded race i mean
That's assuming the changes I proposed are taken into consideration. Never really got a direct response from either of the founders on any of my ideas, and the indirect one was So... I guess we'll see about that. ^_^"
That is indeed a potential problem; and on top of that we don't exactly have a ton of people at the moment. Is it worthwhile to make a whole server for a clan of mostly-inactive players?
Like I said before, the main reason preventing the player base from expanding/returning is that there is no server to play on. I have no doubt that once that first step is taken to actually obtain a server and the news is spread to our currently inactive members (probably via PMs) that the server would be populated at the very least, if not filled. And I suspect once people start playing, they'll be willing to donate to be able to continue to do so. I know I would if I had money to spare for the time being.
Okay, this was weird. I tried logging in to a free-access server, just to see how bad the lag might be. The lag itself was pretty much as I expected; mobs don't notice me as quickly, combat is all kinds of weirdly broken, mining takes longer because I'm probably still mining an empty spot when what I'm mining breaks. But I quickly found out something else as well: the game actually runs better for me when I'm connected to a server instead of in single-player. Less loading time when pulling up the star maps, no slowdown when the weather changes or in liquids. If this is what other people experience when playing normally, I hope this new motherboard gets here soon so I can enjoy the game at full speed instead of muddling through.
The main reason would be the server is handling part of the calculations and just feeding your computer the information. So there is less work for your computer. This is only possible though if there is sufficient bandwidth between you and the server though.
Both my speeds are lousy, I get maybe 1.5 or so mbps, which is about 150 kilobytes per second downloading and 2-3 kilobytes uploading, but I almost never have problems with lag on games like Starbound or Minecraft. Somebody should go through asking the people in the members list if they'd still be up for regularly playing on a BBTS server, as a sort of popularity test before we get too far into this.
Well I'd be up for it. And we defenitely got a few members going. I think @firekirby135 is right and thngs would get going again if we'd start it up. I mean look at our memberlist. we've got a LOT of people in there. And i find it hard to believe that over 90% of our members are completely inactive. Oh and back on the matter of mods. Frackin Universe has been updating a TON these last weeks so that mod will defenitely be up to date.
