I don't know what I'm saying either. I just get miffed when M/M fics get downvote bombed all the time, but half the time the featured stories on Fimfiction are futa.

 

If it makes you feel any better I'll upvote M/M fics just for you.

How cruel

It wasn't Fimfiction, from the sound of it. Well, to fan fiction's credit, it's pretty useful for getting your foot in the door when it comes to writing skills.

 

It probably was Fimfiction, but I dunno. I'd have to remember the name, which I forget. It was quite the read though.

 

A few fics full surpassed my expectations on there, actually. I rec'd it to Bast, called Eyes Without a Face. It was tough to read, because it was so... stark? It never pulled punches, and it was greasy and slimy, just like the protagonist. Or Background Pony, which people hate for breaking their hearts. I dunno man, sometimes fan fic writers can actually write literature.

 

Speaking as an avid reader, quite often really. Especially considering the vast amounts of published books out there that are fairly terrible compared to some of the fan fictions I've read. Some writers just don't do as well with original characters, or prefer to work off of established characters and possibly take them in a different direction.

 

I think it's because the source material does the 'knowing your character' part for you. You watch the characters as an observer, and form an opinion on them. When you're working with original characters, it's tough to do that. So their identities become nebulous at best, and the writing driven by them unfocused. I'd say the way to avoid that is to geek out over your own characters. Get to know them, find things you like about them, shape them up to match their role, the works. When you work on the clock, and don't really connect to the characters you read in other peoples' works yourself, then you'd have trouble keeping things interesting, which may explain that situation you described.
