Barbed wire should damage NPC and animals

Just placed some barbed wire near my house to deal with those pesky monsters and was really disappointed that mobs don't give a damn about barbed wire. I haven't tried embers and tesla spikes yet, however it would be nice to have them damaging someone that is not the player.

Yes, it should. I just assumed it would and hadn't tried it yet, but it definitely should be made useful.

You should try placing this in the 'Suggestions' section, but hey! I'm all for it.

I agree, I generally dislike it when they limit the game in such a way to force it to behave as expected...

A similar issue is that different monsters can't hit each other with projectiles or melee, would be fun to see some monster infighting, just like in the older games.

They should stop centralizing the player.. It kills the immersion. Anything that can hurt you, should be able to hurt other things as well, no special behaviors or exceptions. I hope they're planning to do something about this later on..

This should be a simple enough clientside fix by changing the damage type for barbed wire to something that hurts mobs as well. Alternatively trying to just add a second damagetype, might end up with double damage and have to tweak them, but shouldn't be a biggie.

As much as this would be a very nice 'balance tweak', since I'm pretty sure it's clientside you could just as well tweak it yourself. Rather than asking devs to tweak minor things like this we could as a community just get together and make a list of small things like this, then make a mod that tweaks the lot, freeing up devs to do content and functionality.

Yeah, i wanted to make a Tesla Pit Trap, but when i noticed the mobs don't get damage from it as well i was dissapointed.

This isn't really minor. It kills the immersion and makes the game less fun.

That's a really strange statement, sorry.

This is functionality, and mods are never going to define the main game unless they actually get implemented. The fact that modders will do something about it doesn't mean the devs should not pay attention to certain parts of the game anymore....

Minor in the sense that it's likely just one line of code that needs changing, on top of it being clientside thus something you could change yourself. If it really takes away from your personal gaming experience, by all means change it. I'm sure it'll get looked at in due time.

I never said that devs should stop paying attention to certain parts of the game. I said that we as a community could compile a list of minor issues that could then be implemented in a balancing patch in due time when it's time to polish things, rather than whinge about every little detail that we could change ourselves to improve our experience. Several mods have already been added to the game to bring in new things, I'm certain devs would happily add stuff from a balancing mod that tweaked things like traps and whatnot.

As many opinions and suggestions as are floating around here on the forums the devs can't be expected to 'fix' or 'balance' everything. I'm baffled at the fact that people can be disappointed at functionality when the game is at its current phase, especially functionality you could easily change yourself.

Remember the outcry about wood being excluded as a fuel source? You could add a single line of code back into the wood file by looking at coal, uranium or plutonium ("fuelAmount" : x), yet people were stomping their feet and throwing tantrums. Don't like that the space helmet doesn't give vacuum breathing capability? Simply add breathprotection (by looking at survival system for example).

Bottomline, if you feel that something should be changed, make a suggestion in the suggestions subforum. If you want it changed NOW NOW NOW, the pose your thread as a question for help if you really don't know how to change things yourself and are incapable or unwilling to learn how.

Had OP written this thread in a different tone I would've likely already tweaked up a fix for this issue, I've been thinking about it myself beforehand but didn't feel it was a big enough problem. But reading about disappointment and "uncaring devs" really just put me off.

I would love to see a "farm" barb wire so you can release captured monsters in a pen and have them roam around without them escaping. I would also like to see monsters able to reproduce under farming conditions for leather/meat etc and to mix and match monster appearances.

    Just an idea :megusta:

I am pretty sure it did hurt them in the first public beta version but stopped in one of the updates. So I am not sure if that was intended or it is simply a bug now.

Embers and tesla spikes won't damage enemy mobs I'm afraid. These hazards are made purely to spite the player.

I also want this feature with wooden spikes! Which one hit kill everything they touch but they don't work on NPCs and monsters :( Support.

I already tested it out, yep, they don't damage anything but players. Same goes with wooden spikes. I also want to try this with spinning blades (forgot its name), but I am sure it won't work too.

Well, at least you can craft defense turrets that can damage mobs. Although they have a durability.

I think Tiyuri has said before that the reason traps and stuff don't hurt monsters is that their alpha testers would just bring traps with them and place them down to kill monsters.

So basically they disabled traps from damaging monsters until they can think of a better way to implement it.

It'd be rather neat if traps did damage NPCs and mobs, yeah I agree with that. I'm concerned about the eventual conclusion of such a feature though. If Terraria or Minecraft are anything to go by, it's going to end up in a lot of endgame (or even early game, looking at how easy it is to obtain said traps) is going to end up being AFK grinders..
