Hire an additional artist to do the background art in this game. The background art is unimpressive for a game that millions of people are paying millions of dollars to play for millions of hours. http://antifan-real.deviantart.com/art/Reach-for-the-Stars-311421643 http://demosthenesvoice.deviantart.com/art/As-We-Rise-Again-166317370 http://keepwalking07.deviantart.com/art/Dead-Space-115286893 http://keepwalking07.deviantart.com/art/Unknown-Neighborhood-145631265 http://gabriel-bs.deviantart.com/art/Moon-370769257 http://artush.deviantart.com/art/Serenity-122587722 http://nameless-designer.deviantart.com/art/Solace-88884958 http://sniper115a3.deviantart.com/art/Cold-Touch-202779334 http://qauz.deviantart.com/art/Beautiful-Space-162810285 http://pipper-svk.deviantart.com/art/Aurora-147361184 http://cchomikk.deviantart.com/art/Porcelain-147602254 http://www.deviantart.com/art/Homeworld-264422922
I also disagree. The art you posted would work better for a game with a more realistic style. The current backgrounds that exist fit just fine given the art style Starbound is aiming for.
Well SB could use some more variety. Like adding not-just-black space as backgrounds in certain systems, which would reflect on the sky during nights. Aside from that though, current "you can see what else is out there" approach is really fitting as it is.
I think it would be cool to have better artwork, but not really realistic. I like the style they have now, but it would be cooler with a bit more detail.
The examples you gave are not remotely close to the aesthetics of the game, and would be hideously jarring were something similar implemented. I agree with the above post that a bit more detail would be nice, and not just black space, but other than that the current backgrounds fit in nicely.
