First i though: "meteor showers would be great", and then i was concerned about, how i'm supposed to know if a meteor shower is starting? cause i don't want to be outside when it happens... Then, i though of some kind of space-alarm, maybe a satelite to warn you when a meteor shower is coming... and THEN, i had this simple idea! imagine if, a few moments before a natural disaster or wheater change, the background layer shows it! \o/ like, before it starts to rain, the background layer becomes dark and grayish, or before a meteor shower, you can see little meteors falling on the background! or before a tornado starts, you see cows flying... EDIT: "Another alternative is that it could start raining in the background before it reaches the player's location. Similar effects would work for other events as well. There could also be audio cues, such as a rumble of thunder before a storm, or a deep rumble before an earthquake." ~ "Inferno_Draconis" what d you think?
An excellent idea. Text alerts detract from the atmosphere and realism of a game, and alarms are almost as bad. Background cues are more subtle and could really add to the overall atmosphere of the game.
do we know if weather is in the game? just asking in case i missed it. Regardless, i think a item you could make/buy would be interesting way of giving text based warnings IF you wanted them. the background idea is nice for if you dont, but you might not always be able to see the background, caves, big houses, lots of tress, giant half of the screen boss, so having a way to back up the background weather report might be a good ideas, dont want to walk out of a cave and get hit in the back of the head by a metro.
Both of these statements are very true. Looking at Terraria the blood moon almost seemed silly when it's big entrance was a little text pop-up that was surrounded by everyones idle chitchat surrounding whose hat was better. Had the sky visually changed in the background, that would have been significantly more exciting.
That is actually a very interesting Idea, would be good to see in the game, plus the it would add a little something to the background as well. Good thought, Keep it up
What if the background didn't work with the effect? Like dark and gray clouds (for rain) wouldn't show up on a smoggy, eternally dark planet.
Another alternative is that it could start raining in the background before it reaches the player's location. Similar effects would work for other events as well. There could also be audio cues, such as a rumble of thunder before a storm, or a deep rumble before an earthquake.
I think this would be a good way to show the player changing weather conditions and events without the need for text on screen. It also gives the background some variation apart from the day/night cycle (assuming there will be one). What a horrible night to have a curse. The morning sun has vanquished the horrible night.
The idea about having a background warning, along with other indicatiors, would be a great addition to the game. It really sounds like something that would fit in with the design of starbound.
Another great idea from the community! This would make the planet you're on seem more lively and add a whole new feel to the game!
I approve! It's a great idea! Not sure how easy it's to implement, or if it is ever going to be implemented, but hoping for a wonder cannot hurt. However, you have my support!
I also very much like this idea. I also DO like the OP's idea of a satellite or some such being able to give you some sort of audible or text alarm- but only if you decide to build it, for instance on a planet that happens to be prone to hurricanes but is perpetually muggy anyways, you might want to invest in an early alarm system if you care enough. I also think it should be a matter of picking and choosing what kind of alarms you want to set up. A satellite might let you know a meteor storm is coming (or it might be on the other side of the planet and fail, oh no!) but it won't tell you about the earthquake coming, so if you were going to invest in an alarm system you'd want to select the right one, like a seismic scanner, etc. Either way, I am in love with the idea of background queues. It'd be like watching a real storm rolling in!
If I remember right, Weather Stations are buildable in-game that can control & Terraform the Weather. I would be surprised if they didn't also offer Weather Monitoring Services as well.
I love this idea! I can imagine me building a large weather station on my home planet, recording and monitoring every single possible weather outcome! Maybe, weather only happens in certain parts of the planet e.g if you see a distant storm in the background, you know that somewhere on the planet, there is a storm going on.
you mean like earthquakes, tornadoes and hurricanes? If a player were to abuse this machine, wouldn't the planet be ruined in a way?
