Hello everyone! Something that I think would be neat is doors that would be placeable in the background to give the illusion of depth. They wouldn't have to be functional as doors. This would allow for creating hallways where you seemingly pass by several rooms. Thoughts?
Even without functionality they would be interesting. What would be even more interesting is if you could enter them and kind of "hide". You just enter through one of these doors and become hidden until you exit. Kind of like hiding behind a curtain.
A background door which can't be opened is pretty sweet. Or even a "mini" teleporting system. Press W when infront of a BG door and you will exit where it is connected. (W or S if it's going up/ down)
I like the idea. It would be fun to explore them in dungeons as well as put them in your own bases to lead to storage rooms and maybe the odd secret passage
Background doors is a nice idea! It feels immersive. Also hoping they work in Horizontal doors also (like the basement doors we usually have) would be nice!
This would be a great elevator substitute. Put a background door in where you would want to install an elevator and exit doors at whatever height or depth on the same vertical axis. Then you can simply use whatever key command that is programed ( ex. up+enter to go up) while in front of the door to go up or down floors. Can also have vehicle size doors and normal person size doors.
I created a similar suggestion on the Terraria forums a long time ago: http://www.terrariaonline.com/threads/multiple-layer-houses.56793/ Everything I said in that thread is basically what I have to say to this thread, look at it if you want. http://www.terrariaonline.com/threads/entering-doors-to-mini-map-levels.60827/ The link above is about the same thing, but explained in more detail.
great idea, though they could have limited functionality aswell, like with teleport/tunnel logic or something, but just doors would be fine you could always try the poor mans method, have a bunch of open doors
I think doors would feel weird. You have 2d world but suddenly there's doors in the background that you cannot use... I think they'd also partially break immersion as destroying the door would suddenly show the void behind it. I cannot exactly bring it into words, but I do not think this is a good idea.
My idea is that they would be attached to the background wall like the paintings or w/e. I also don't need them to do anything, just be visual. Anything beyond that is a bonus.
I was going to suggest the same thing, but more similar to XRiZUX's ideas. You could craft a doorway (or passageway, whatever you want to call it). The "inside", the second level, is generated (or exists already) based on the wall/background blocks that are on the outside, the main world. Initially, the room itself is just the 6 squares right behind the doorway - enough to accommodate your character's sprite. Then you can mine away at the other blocks as normal. This would allow you to tunnel through the ground and background areas, even large distances, just as you would normally. If you were to tunnel out of the inside and emerge into the open air, you'd be spat back into the outside world, but there'd be no way to get back in the same way, so that hole in the wall could serve as a one-way door. It'd be just like it's hidden or inaccessible from the outside. (Just mining the hole wouldnt spit you out, but moving into open air would). The only way back in would be to place a new doorway, or travel back to your original doorway. And/or, there could also be a "side-on" doorway - like normal doors - to also allow entry to the "inside" from a flat edge And/or, there could be certain magic or items that allow you to see "hidden" entrances, and enter them. In theory, you could even build doorways while "inside" to lead to a third level, and so on. There'd need to be some kind of subtle change, though, so you can tell at a glance which "level" you're on. Maybe just darken the colour of the blocks when inside. Other than that, the idea of an elevator would be interesting. Maybe even teleporters or portals™, like the Magic Mirror but in door form.
I like the idea of it being more complicated, I just don't see that as in the scope of the game atm. But we already have windows in the 3rd dimension, just feel like doors make sense. If they are just placeable like paintings, we'd have them in game in a day (just the sprite art would need to be created).
I really liked the ideas of having doors not only for functional purposes, but also enemies entering the map through them. It would be a cool dungeon mechanic, I think! Hiding in these doors was also a really great idea! Either way it is an aesthetic item I would be really happy to see in-game!
