This actually is one of the reasons I stopped playing for a while. I'd start a new character, and just get owned by the birds every single time.

Unrelated: Colourful Biomes on Desert Planets. I didn't know they changed them to Arid planets?

Back in my day the end game weapons had insane damage and birds were sworn enemies of players.

The birds. My nightmare, Dreadwing was easier to kill than an army of birds (a very big army of birds :))

I remember when the only fuel I used for my ship was wood.

    I can remember when:
    1) I could start on a volcanic hell world with no trees and an un-upgradable matter manipulator, forcing me to spend hours digging through obsidian with coal in it so I could fuel my microscopic ship to go to another system.
    2) If you removed all the trees and grass on a planet, monsters wouldn't spawn anymore.
    3) I had to build giant magmarock shields above my house so meteors wouldn't destroy everything
    4) There was tentacle henai biomes ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
    5) I eventually ditched my useless matter manipulator on some random deserted planet and flew away

sad it's gone. really sad, took quite a lot of RP from the game. But hey, at least you have a pet now that eats 20x its own weight a day. Also it questions the entire "grow" food mechanics

yeah when bossfights were just a arena of boss vs turrets mode. good old times xD

Glad it's gone. It was an unnecessary hassle that tried to get players to care about food, and punished players for not caring about food. It also forced players to kill enemies with the weakest weapons in the game (you were forced to Bookmark a Lv1 planet so you could actually kill something sometime today with a bow or hunting knife) and/or it forced people to farm, depending on your race.

If you were a human, you were laughing all the way, because your food was hilariously easy to grow. Not so much if you were a Floran, however.....

I think food is a bit better now, though they could give slightly better regen, AND it'd be nice if the food's tooltip said what it actually did. You can filter food by type while crafting... but yet the food's tooltip doesn't tell you what it does? lel?

    Ahem.

All races had starter crops with the same growing times (Boneboo took the same amount of time as Corn... also every race had Wheat) and no food was "race-specific" in that I "fondly" remember playing an Avian who constantly ate Black Current Crumble made from "Glitch" crops because there was no reason to not do so. It only took Boltbulb, Wheat, Eggshoot and Sugar to do so, after finding the recipe.

Yes, but different foods restored different amounts of food meter, and I remember the update(s) where Floran started with Boneboo but NOT wheat, and as such, they could not make the super-easy burgers that humans had (which was just a couple wheat+cooked meat). Said Burgers refilled a huge (75%?) amount of food meter.

Boneboos took quite a bit longer than meat, and you had to double-cook the meat to make their next-up food (turning cooked meat into meat chunks).

Unless my modding memory is failing me, most non-crop food had a hunger value of 100 (instantly full food bar).

I also don't remember this. When was this, exactly? Near initial release? I started playing in December of 2013. :V

Apex had it super easy. Wheat + Bananas for some banana bread that was easily one of the best healing items in the entire game.

this, food never was a problem after 2014, you just grew a few tiles of no water needing plants in the ship and never ran out of it. just eating some raw plants, there never was a need to process anything. now food is a waste fo time to grow or get it, just a few bandages/stims or a carry your own interrogation table and health is no issue.

It was fun reading these posts. Building arenas/turrets to kill bosses and having large numbers of enemies to attack you sounds fun.

I also like how some people didn't like the hunger mechanic yet they have these cool foods they talked about making. X food restored so much hunger, Y food had the best healing, etc.

In my opinion they should replace bandages/nanowrap/etc. with food and have the food heal more and stuff. And bring back hunger (glad they are doing the hunger thing <3). The hunger bar sounds like a great idea, and they could use it to gate healing if they wanted to...or not. Maybe healing shouldn't be gated.

I personally hated the hunger mechanism, but I do welcome the idea that food can give you buffs. I just like it to be optional, and not be beholden by a schedule. (And glad the devs are planning on optional hunger!)

Indeed. I soon found hunger to be an aggravation at best. Even if they'd have changed to numbers so you no longer went from Stuffed Full to Dead in less than a single day in game time (you can survive for a few months without food in reality, and even dehydration can take upwards a week to do you in... yeah, game-time is accelerated but THAT amount of acceleration is goddamn ridiculous), it was little more than an irritating egg timer that quickly just became audio harassment since food was so abundant.

Thus, there's two things I'd love to see food do more, and the first of them they've only really scratched the surface on, and that is buffs. I'm a little disappointed that some of the weird random buffs from the Status Capsules aren't around so much anymore... I actually rather enjoyed the risk of being Bouncy or Floating, the Low Gravity was often useful (or just fun). They talked about how the new status setup let them really do a lot back when they overhauled it (tho they did say it'd be a bit barebones early)... and I'm hoping to see food become a status-change festival.

I'd be happy to have a bulky food that temporarily boosts your damage resistance but also drops your speed and jumping height. Carrot-based recipes that are effectively varying degrees of glow effect, aka giving you better night vision (or just a temporary bubble of "fullbright" effect, higher-ingredient versions will increase the bubble range, perfect for spelunking). Fizzy Lifting Drinks. Spicy Curry that makes you spit fire. Something that actually imbues a Poison effect, but trades that off with a HEAVY attack boost for a high-risk-high-reward deal.

The other is Be Decor. I want to place cakes and drinks on tables. I want to have a pie on the windowsil. I've thought a bit about ways to pull this off, and I'm feeling like a placeable item, "Food Plate" perhaps, a storage device with a single slot (like the pet food bowl) that then just displays the icon of the food on top of it. Maybe you have a 2-tile-wide Food Plate and a single-tile Drink Coaster. This might necessitate redrawing some icons to be more edge-on, but know what? I'm fine with that.

Back in Floran'ss day, there wass actual adventure to be had.

None of this tiered, boring limited biome nonsense. No! Floran could land on a ssmall patch of grass, travel sslightly to the west, sstart freezing because of ssnow, and then watch as fire rained from the ssky and burned thingss. It wass gloriousss. Floran understandss that people were too lazy to ssit around and make ssure no meteorss would ssmash them in the face, but sstatic biomess and weather hass left exploration dead.

Sseen one desert planet, sseen them all.
