Awful Pixel System

Pixels are "easy come, easy go" so this really isn't an issue. With the ability to turn ore into Pixels it'll be even easier to bank them.

But how would you even achieve that economic balance? There has to be a sink for it somewhere. It can't accumulate endlessly without the previously stated consequences.

You are completely free to ignore the banking system. If you are skilled at the game then you won't die and there is no penalty to worry about. But all risky actions should have consequences otherwise it isn't a very compelling game.

I personally hate heavy death penalties. If I make a simple mistake and lose the last hours worth of progress... well then I usually just stop playing altogether. I have too little time in my life to waste repeating content because of some arbitrary penalty. Why do we even need one? Having to run all the way back to where you were already takes plenty of time, and is annoying enough to be a worthwhile disincentive.

instead of complaining about Pixel loss come up with a BETTER IDEA for it.. there has to be a penalty for Death as mentioned before and losing pixels is really they only Penalty that seem right and it got to be a good amount to and if your able to store 100% and get back 100% of thoes pixels there will be 0 risk in dying because you will just bank every 1000+ Pixel and have no penalty when you die at all.. God i think a lot of people just want a game were everything is easy =.=

You know, people have made a good point: Why are we so fixed on a harsh death penalty? People seem to act as if it's absolutely, 100% necessary.

I don't think there should be no death penalty, but we don't absolutely need a harsh one.

I don't believe that there *has* to be a gold sink somewhere. That's MMO design and I don't think it stands here. The game is more fun when you don't have to worry about the economic side of things, and instead you're free to enjoy the other content the game has to offer. I feel like risk is the LEAST compelling part of any game, because it makes me second-guess doing anything. "Should I go into these ruins? I don't want to lose pixels. But then again, if I compress it, I lose 40%... what if it's not that hard?"

Meanwhile, if I can just put my pixels away for safe keeping, I'm already halfway through the dungeon, looting chests and stealing furniture while high-risk-worry me is still outside worrying.

This is definitely going to be an issue further down the line for the game, and I think the best way to handle it is to put in difficulty settings early on. Easy might be something like

    - Lose 10% of held pixels on death
    - 0% loss on compression
    - Some passive health regen

etc. etc. Hardcore players can set the risk for death as high as they want. I just don't enjoy it.

    a
this is just.. stupid.. 10%? really? thats just plain stupid. the death penalty has to be there and yes there HAS to be a money sink becuase if there isnt you can just remove pixels as a whole instead since you will just have so much of it there will be no Value in it

I would like that as well, maybe it'll be that way when they fix the printer as it isn't working as intended right now.

Then they should reduce the drop rates of pixels in dungeons and mob drops.Value is defined by scarcity, and pixels could remain valuable without an arbitrary and annoying loss of pixels that is just wasting time and actually adds a disincentive to exploring, i.e. the entire point of the game.

The money sink already exists with 3D printing. If you haven't gotten a chance to, you should take a look at the prices for even very simple furniture. Roundy tents set you back about 3,000 pixels. Avian chairs are 1,500. Some of the nicer, more technology-oriented furniture can set you back as much as 5,000. In addition, furniture costs money to scan in. So if I have one roundy tent, but want two, I have to spent a grant total of 6,000 pixels and change to scan and replicate two of them. When you factor in the penalty of death, a simple campsite quickly becomes twenty minutes or more of exploration to build.

I don't think I need to hemorrhage pixels at every turn in order for them to feel valuable--they already do. Pixels let me make good armor, let me create the house that I want... they let me fulfill the sandbox experience that I was under the impression Starbound was going to be. Being a space cowboy, amassing wealth, and building gorgeous homes filled with culture and detail is something that I find very much compelling.

Losing huge sums of pixels (big numbers like 30-40%) isn't compelling. It feels the same way high level ores in Terraria did. "Oh, cool, I have three stacks of this ore! That makes... 21 bars." It wasn't fun there, and it's not fun here either.

I think that people who are looking for a hardcore experience should get what they want out of the game, too. I'm just asking for the option, because it's not my favorite thing.

your acting as if we got the full game.. and if you want to remove the Pixel death penalty the value is gone of it.. you will just have so much you can basically just 3d Print anything or craft anything ( requiring you have the other meterials) and if the pixel penalty is removed they will have to ramp up the Crafting meterials for everything that required pixels instead

I don't know about everyone else, but if I had an excess of pixels I wouldn't just be sitting on them and letting them accumulate. I would be printing out a boatload of stuff from the 3D printer! That printer would fuel the construction of bases and cities across the galaxy! As it is now, I feel like I won't be using the printer much because I'll want to hold on to all my pixels for necessities. So it seems for me, having the harsh leash on the pixels makes me LESS likely to spend them on fun stuff.

yea i know about 3D printing but if you remove the death penatlty or the penalty on banking you will just have so much pixels that you can 3d Print anything. dosent matter if its expensive or not you can print anything.. and if the pixel loss is removed they will need to remove it on Crafting to since you will just have so much of it they will need to ramp up the crafting meterials A LOT and to add on to this.. we got like all most half the game here.. you will rprobably get like 300-500 pixels from mobs once you get to the 90 planets and like 1000+ pixels from chests =.=

If people are accumulating too many pixels then the costs are too low. One way to fix this is to increase crafting costs as you say, or you could reduce pixel drops. I don't care either way, but both are considerably better than the value-through-tedium of the death penalty system.

Actually, his suggestion for reducing the death penalty and just dramatically reducing pixel drops would do a lot to help

It would mean that pixels are still hard to come by, but it would also feel less like you're having hard-earned loot taken away from you when you try to bank it

It's the same deal, just presented in a way that seems more appealing

I don't disagree with you -- but for the record, this makes you sound like a brat too.

Passive aggressiveness aside, I feel the pixel sink is too large in this game. There have been far too many times (especially early game) where I wanted to make something I had the materials for, but could not since I didn't have enough pixels. That didn't feel right to me.

If there is no Death Penalty you will just keep run in
not really.. the pixel loss right now is good they can go up to 30% if they want to. if there is no death penalty i will just go mining for AGES and then just die to get back to my ship and base easy no Loss at all.. and as mentioned before if there is no pixel loss at death there will be no real reason to have it to be honest..

Yes really, because if getting pixels is made harder but prices stay close to the same, even a small death penalty would still set you back a lot

You could probably even just have the extreme scarcity gradually ease until you can just be rolling in pixels once you've learned to actually appreciate your wealth

Well that's kind of exploiting the game mechanics, which as far as I am concerned is up to them. Plenty of other ways to cheat. Besides, this is not an MMO where balance and cheating are big issues.

I know it makes me sound like a brat, I get annoyed when people act like children, and my first response is to treat them like that. I just want people to post actual constructive criticism, and be polite about it. Kindness begets kindess and all that.
