Awful Pixel System

Wow i didn't know you could refine low quality ore. Once i get a refinery i won't have to care about pixels at all.

It's typical for games to have a penalty to dying.. I haven't found any issue with the way the pixel system is right now other than the fact that some items are priced too high.

As a personal comment... Right now, I just go on extensive mining missions on the hardest planets, dying many, many times... but I don't care. I have pretty much no pixels anyway from the simple fact everything around here one-shots me anyway. I'm just saving up ridiculous amounts of ore and ingots, and always carry a refinery with me along with all my ore and bars. If I happen across a shop, I'll just create the pixels I need for an item right there. *shrugs*

to be honest that's why they add different difficulty levels which does not seem to be in starbound as of yet and i hope will be in it later not everyone wants to play on hardcore or hard some people like to play on normal and take it easy with easy

I can't really argue with this. My only concern would be online servers. Hardcore players won't want easy players in their server throwing off the balance, but dividing up servers into several different difficulties of 'can' or 'can't' bring players in is awful.

I love how outraged people are that they have to play the game to get things done.
H'waaah, I died! Now I have to play the game even more!
Most of this game is about exploring the universe - and if you're just trying to get the end of the game, then why are you complaining?
They're doing a character wipe soon anyways.

it wouldn't be like that anyway who ever made the server would probably set the difficulty of the server to what ever they wanted and who ever joined would be on that as well until they left or went to there single player game

Sure are a lot of complaints about pixels. This, alongside the adamant defense of static planets so people can get easy gear, I'm starting to think that most players here just don't want to play the game. You guys should just get a character editor or a mod that makes it EZ mode and stop your damn whining because this is exactly what you'll get when the game is trivialized just for you.

I can understand complaints about progression and overall balance, but there is and was nothing wrong with pixels. They are easy to get, and even more so with the refinery where you can just convert excess copper into thousands of pixels that, when left in the refinery, you don't even lose on death. Farming specifically for pixels is easy too. Just on a threat level 1 planet with my starter weapon on the first day I was getting hundreds of pixels with ease and was able to pay the "too high" cost everyone was whining about.

I think enough is enough, you guys should just get character editors.

Uh, no. They already massively cut down on pixel costs to where you're paying almost nothing (in the case of Copper, you are literally paying nothing) up through Silver. Clearing dungeons, prisons and villages nets you 3-5k pixels quite easily and up through Steel I've had no issues with even dropping below the 3k pixel mark. With the upcoming change to combat difficulty, if you're dying two or three times in a row then you've got massive issues with playing the game. I actually don't want to see the Voxel Blocks just because it takes away any penalty of dying since getting 1k pixels is absurdly easy with the game as it is.

And no, I've not gotten a single OP weapon as of yet, my best weapon when taking on the UFO was a AP 6 2handed sword and a AP 4 pistol that did 4 damage each shot. My equipment has nothing to do with my evaluation of the difficulty.
If you're dying often, kill NPCs for stimpacks and make bandages.

I just don't understand why Tiy is so hellbent on making you lose pixels at every turn.

    - Pixels to craft armor
    - Pixels to scan furniture (meaning you lose pixels AND the furniture.)
    - Pixels to 3D print furniture
    - Pixels for dying
    - Pixels for storing pixels

Just cut it out already. Why does death need to be a huge bummer? To make the game "fun"? I'm at the point right now where there's no reason whatsoever to leave the Alpha galaxy. None. I'm not going somewhere where there's even the chance of dying because it means losing 10-20 minutes of time EACH death. Is that how a fun game is supposed to feel?

All this arguing... all this discussion... all these finger pointings.... what has beta done to us?! WHAT HAS BETA DONE TO US?

Lets just wait till the update and see how everything ties into each other.

I fail to see the bad in this, in fact I see nothing but good:
    1. I can store and trade pixels, and even thought there is a cost, I'm usually only trading for stuff you can't buy.
    2. I can make more crazy runs on planets, which I consider fun, and not worry about dropping my pixel count by 60 to 80% because I take huge risks.
    3. This makes getting large amounts of pixels safe and easy, 40% conversion beats multiple deaths robbing you of thousands of pixels.

The reality is that having no death penalty is all that much worse in a multiplayer environment. Without it as a sink for currency it becomes all too easy for economies to become inflated by players who've accumulated tons of money with little spend it on. The result is that new players are squeezed out of the market.

But the entire game is gear based, currently. If someone is playing on super easy, they'll be bringing in the same guns and equipment they earned from super easy into the hardcore server. If someone got AP 90 weapons on easy, and is then distributing them on a hardcore server, that messes everything up. And players on the hardcore server can use their friends making easy accounts to get high items.

Excellent post overall, but I like this part especially.

To clarify I don't search caves for ores (I also ignore most pixel jars because they typically only have 6ish pixels although they can be fun to shoot with my high fire-rate Assault Rifle), I explore caves because I think it's fun to find the stuff in them (I found a cool frog merchant with an excellent sprite in a weird ancient broken down castle environment that sells gold pick axes for pretty cheap and 15 bombs for 150 pixels in one notable example), and I only mine the available ore when it's there. To spend even 30 minutes doing nothing but staring at a mostly black screen just for the purpose of getting better equips is grinding to me and so I just won't do it.

What is the point of having a currency if you have nothing to spend it on? It has to be a limited resource otherwise what you acquire with it also becomes trivialized.

Personally, I really think scanning items should have a static, very low costs, since printing them is so expensive--particularly for builders like myself who may want to make, say, twenty chairs for purely aesthetic purposes. I'm fine with the printing cost, but can we at least be able to scan the items and use it like a cool log of stuff we found over our adventures? I originally thought that's what the scanner was when I first found it, and then realized it was utterly useless to me. Sorry, when my pixels are required for buying crucial weaponry upgrades or crafting armor, I have to choose between living longer or having a cool place. When that happens, building a cool place or collecting items just isn't worth it. It becomes better to just run around, stabbing other races in the face and taking their stuff, since printing off a copy of an item yourself is ridiculously expensive. And I, who refuses to kill non-hostile npcs as a moral role-player, find this makes things extremely difficult when we have no real alternatives.

I'll admit, I use to feel very much the way you do. The loss of pixels on death seemed soul crushing at first. But honestly, even without a pixel storage system, once I hit tier 2ish that feeling was a memory. I typically have between 10000-15000 pixels and, to be honest, I'm not even trying to farm them. The biggest expenditures of pixels at this point, by far, is armor. Beyond that, there really isn't much I have found it necessary to spend on. Dropped weapons from dungeons are reasonable and even purchasing weapons from a merchant doesn't really cost that much.

That said, I still do not fully comprehend why pixels are required when I am crafting something at an anvil. If I'm using my 3D Printer to print something, pixel cost makes complete sense to me. At an anvil or other crafting station I have built, not so much...

You can always store the items until you have the money to spare to scan them.
