Awful Pixel System

It seems like people are forgetting the refinery? just save up some ore and you can have it spew out enough pixels for anything.

Like what? Other than Bed of Chaos (fuck that boss, that is the worst boss in game history.), I can't really think of any at all.

another thing people doesnt seem to be considering is that the combat system is about to get an overhaul and they also want to put more function into armor.

What this can lead to is that you may die less if they get rid of all the oneshotting.

I highly doubt the loss of pixels on death will be that much of an issue when you can actually survive an onslaught.

Wait until the patchup before you judge as theres more that fits togerher than you are discussing in the topic. :)

I like the compromise. Players who are very reckless have a means to store their pixels safely at a cost and those who are very careful can continue with the current system albeit with a slightly higher penalty.

The added benefit of these items having a concrete trading value in a multiplayer environment is also absolutely invaluable. Well done Chucklefish.

As someone who hates, with a burning passion, grinding I fail to see what the fuss is about. I am currently in gamma sector with only silver armour, because mining does feel a little to grindy for me right now (because exploring caves leads to so little ore, especially when compared to mining though the earth at random), literally everything one-shots me and I still don't have pixels problems, expect when I go crazy at the merchants and only then until I wander off to explore another planet and kill the local wildlife while searching the surface for cool things. Honestly I welcome the change as it will be nice to keep a nest egg for quick purchases, but pixels are so easy to obtain (even without grinding) it really just a convenience. As some of the others have pointed out, learn to dodge. Pro-tip: One can get really good at it if everything one-shots you and the only way to live is to learn to dodge.

It's just difficult for the sake of being difficult. Nothing else. I welcome difficult games with open arms, but when it's done for stupid reasons, then it can bug right off. In it's current state, the game is just a grindfest. I've found no reason to dig down deep, so I just jump from planet to planet just looking for bases and dungeons in the over world, and then I move on. The pixel system doesn't even need to be in the game as it is now. It just needs to be currency, and that's it. There's no reason for it to be used in crafting anything at all. Is it glue? No. You buy shit with it. The metalwork station is apparently like an arcade game. "25cents to play", except it's "500 pixels to use". It's ridiculous.

I don't see a problem with how it is currently. To start with I thought it was a bit hard to get enough pixels but then explored some more and dig down really deep and its really not a problem now. Having some kind of penalty is a must I think and implementing a Bank sure why not but I think it is fair to have a greater penalty than dying if you bank them.

Just wanna throw this out there, we kinda have a system for storing pixels anyway. I have 1k bars of copper, that's 10k pixels I can pull from the refinery whenever I need them.

And much of what you talk about is a result of the game not being done. There is still a lot to do to balance everything out. These little details will take time to polish up which is precisely what will continue through the beta.

I like heavy death penalties. You should have a strong incentive to not die (makes exploration dangerous / exciting) - with that being said, I am sure there will eventually be varying difficulty levels or modes for the user to choose.

Dig through soft earth, only use caves to find pixel jars/potential random rool and to find more soft earth. It's way less of a grind just to dig through ash looking for ore, takes about 30 minutes to get more than enough for whatever you're crafting.

Yeah I know, but the devs seem hellbent on keeping some of those features already. They raised the death penalty after lowering it once before, AND on top of that, made storing pixels have an absurd penalty, too.

I'm not too keen on the losing pixels upon compression thing. I mean, what's the point of storing pixels if you're gonna lose some anyway? I would feel a lot better about it if pixels weren't both a currency and a crafting ingredient.

I like the way it's done in Terraria's softcore. You can store your money in a piggy bank or whatever you want to put it in, but death causes you to lose half your coins.

Wait, what? The game is putting in a pixel bank? Where is the source for this (apologies if I'm blind?)

to be honest i would rather drop my pixels on the ground and be able to pick them back up for a certain amount of time also if were going to be "banking" them why the heck should we lose any pixels its like a penalty for playing smart

Fucking thank you. I'm fine with losing my shit upon death, but to just add more and more penalties is stupid.

Man, this is how it always starts. A bunch of people whining that the game is too hard and then the developer ruins the game to try and rebalance it so poor players can have a fighting chance.
I'm confused why people are saying this game is difficult for the sake of being difficult. Is the game hard? Yea, it can be pretty brutal. On the first planet there were plenty of monsters that could kill me in two hits. But it added something important to the game- a sense of death.
Without some penalty (I would say the 30% pixel loss is too low, even), people will just keep running through and doing stupid things. Those with AP 10 weapons who cheesed the bosses will be doing suicide runs in Threat Level 40 worlds over and over until they find rare AP 40 weapons.
I don't need another game where I'm a space marine mowing down everything in my path without challenge. I want a game where I am just a guy exploring the dangerous and unforgiving universe.

I bet you're the kind of person who modded Creepers out of Minecraft.

I am a fan of Tiy's proposed change.

If you are saving for something right NOW you will play* it a bit safe. You earn a little faster anyway because no conversion penalty.

If you have nothing to spend the pixels on sacrifice ~1.5 death penalties for freedom from your wallet (now you are free to go exploring again, maybe you find something you want to craft and you don't have to worry about losing ~2k pixels on death)

    This is a good change.
    ------------------------------

    Suggestions, though:
    - Instead of a flat 40%, the penalty should be on a gradient. Smaller tokens should be at a higher penalty and large tokens should be at a lower penalty (all the way down to ~35% for the largest, imo)

This would give you some incentive to make conversions in larger chunks. Risk your wallet a little.

There is a very good point: you have the risk/reward scenario between depositing them with no risk and having them whenever you need them vs. making the bet that you won't die and having more pixels to spend later. It is basically a gamble. If you don't have a cost associated with it then depositing them because the optimal route in all cases which is boring and it nearly completely negates the entire point of the death penalty.
