Awful Pixel System

There has to be balance to banking, if you could bank without worry of losing anything then there would be no sense of danger from death.

So if you find yourself dying a lot then banking will be helpful for you, but to those who are more cautious they will be able to hold onto their pixel and not lose any from dying/if they don't die but it's the risk they pay to not have to farm more pixels.

It's like the tortoise and the hare, the hare would be players that don't use the bank but if they have 500k pixels and die then they lose 150k pixels.

However if the tortoise stores 10k every chance they lose out on 200k pixels if they store up to an equivalent of 500k which in turn would only be 300k, while a person who managed to hold 500k and die would only lose 150k, but then again the stored 300k is always there where as if the person then decided they wanted to store their pixels after death, they would lose out on more pixels.

It looks like a good balance, it will be interesting to see how it effects things overall but even with the banks big % taken out from refining it still seems like a more efficient means of playing since an accidental death can easily set someone back.

And? Sorry the 20% loss thing had me going why should I care if I die as I can regain a few thousand in a few minutes of killing things.

I wouldn't mind seeing banks as part of a town ect where you have to protect or aka not kill the town in order to use the bank.

You also missed the point creating a pixel block makes you loose 40% of pixels during the compression.

That word is taboo to most developers. Grinding is just a cheap way to extent gameplay length.
Because this is beta, we should criticize, we should say what we do and do not want. This is how things get worse, when people don't speak up.

It really depends on whether the activity associated with the grinding is fun

Like the way unlocking weapons and accessories worked in Battlefield 3, where you had to get kills and do other things to earn stuff: that's technically grinding, but you're doing it by just playing the game, which you supposedly enjoy doing for its own sake

Let us look at it this way guys. Pixels are relatively easy to gain. Get a weapon above the planet and kill stuff, or go to a high lv planet where things like silver or gold are like dirt and put it in the refinery.

This will simply mean we can actually store them and bank them. Aka you get keep 20,000 pixels without having to worry that you will die and lose most of them.

very true, and i'm not saying that you shouldnt criticize the game.

Honestly if we could have a "bank" on our ship that would be nice in my opinion.

I personally enjoy grinding because I get points for killing things which sweetens the deal, and rare drops adds more to the fun. Since again you are stating opinion I agree to disagree and nothing you say or I say will have anything backing it other than opinion, only way for either of us to be right is to do scientific studies and surveys in order to back up are claims. So in my humble opinion I like grinding/reward for doing stuff in games. It's obvious by your "facts" that you do not like grinding. So plainly I agree to disagree with you.

I'm pretty sure you're forgetting the point of a beta yourself. They asked us to help with the direction some of the content would be taking. The point of a beta is to voice our concerns NOW, not whenever the game is fully released. Get off your high horse. Now is the time to complain.

I don't think it's that bad of an idea, at the moment pixel loss is the only reason I dont always go on super dangerous and long mining trips. If we didn't have pixel loss I'd just go dig to the deepest layers of the planet, get a lot of resources, die, and then save time getting back to my base. There has to be something bad abotu dying, and really it isnt very hard to stay alive if you're careful, you can't really tank creatures like they're terraria zombies, and the fact that bandages are cheaper now makes htings even easier to live between fights. I think it's a fair system, it give you a way to store pizels when you KNOW you're going to be doing smethign you probably wont live through.

Plus, it will help server economies, what better way to get players to buy things than by saying "Oh hey, you might die and lose them, so spend them here instead".

I never really had a problem with the pixel system. Once you get your head around the game and craft yourself one of the basic iron weapons (and keep upgrading), you're practically swimming in pixels.

This system's fine if they want to add it. And it's fine if people want to use it or don't want to use it. Everything in this type of game is optional, after all.

I'll probably make use of it because it's just useful with the combat detection system/going down platforms is as wonky as it still is. I don't know how many time's I've accidentally fallen to my death in this game...

Grinding has to be balanced because too often you have games that add grinding 100 hours for something and call it "content" when it adds nothing useful to the game and just prolongs it. Aka there needs to be a purpose to grinding. If you are only grinding because the drop rate is so low and/or the cost is so high then there is an issue. Atm pixels are easy to obtain and I could hardly call it grinding and 90% of the time I dash head first around and get one hit and I have no issues getting pixels.

You can't pause Starbound either. Also, the bridge is CHARRED, for fucks sake. The statues thing is completely false, too. I've beaten Dark Souls multiple times, and it is a great example of how to be difficult for good reasons. When you die, you lose souls, but you have the chance to get them back.

I told a couple friends about Tiy's idea for the pixel banking system and the 40%. They didn't like it. One flat out called it garbage.

Personally, i think it should be a flat rate, not a percentage. That way if you're careful, make a good amount of money, then bank it, well.. it's rewarding.

Rewards for success should exceed punishment for failure in video games, even if it's just by a little bit. These are video games, after all. I think Tiy's on the right track, but is just a little preoccupied with the punishment aspect. Not saying he's obsessed with it or anything, mind you.

Tiy didn't seem to want to do any kind of banking system to start with. The fact that he's willing to go with this means he's willing to be open minded.

Oh, trust me, I walked onto the bridge expecting something bad to happen, because I had seen the dragon and could still hear it.

It's that by somehow prompting the dragon to move to my side, it became impossible for me to go out without dying after five steps. I had to just try again once he was back on the other side.

It's a generally fantastic game that for some reason makes a handful of really, really awful decisions.

Out of interest, why does the penalty for banking pixels have to be greater than the penalty for death?

I agree like all things thier must be a balance. I personally enjoyed the metroidvania style castlevania games grinding system.
