Awful Pixel System

Even when using the bank though I just don't see this working as a balnce to pixel hording, which is what I've said in other....(sadly enough) MMOs, you don't balance out your worth of currency by adding in these "gold sinks" you simply add in whats a small nearly unnoticeable inconvenience to players who are able to horde gold, and what can act as a pretty annoying wall to players who can't. For starbound's case, anyone who can pickup two guns and easily climb over this wall.

not sure what you're talking about here...

Perhaps it's not noticeable to YOU, but it is to others (like me!)

They could also just have a timer system. If you die, you lose 20% if your pixels and you also have a condition put on you that lasts an hour. If you die with that condition you lose 30%.

Too be fair that is a necessary quality of a good game designer. It is quite clear he has good grips on game design and it is nice that he sticks to it.

You are not understanding what I meant.

    SO here.

Again. I constantly dash around not caring if I die because I can make it up in seconds. Sorry but if I can fly around dieing all the time and still manage to get cash to spend there is no problem with it being to steep of a penalty.

    Good.

There have been games designed by public vote. They have been terrible. And, ironically, unpopular.

Gamers don't know what they want, until they're given it. They don't know why they want it even then.

They will always vote to turn a game in the direction of a godmode sandbox, where you can do anything with any mechanic with no limits. And then they will quickly get bored of it.

You said yourself the point of a Beta was to give feedback and possibly suggest alternatives to said problems, implying we need to start listing down every possible alternative like we're actually on the development team and have the proper knowledge of this stuff.

Last time I checked, you actually did get a bit of money, if not much, for storing your money in a bank, not losing it every time you made a deposit.

Yeah, I know, this game isn't real life, but I'm just saying...

I have a bunch of reasons to like the new changes:

First of i will start with a story of me losing pixels, i just came back from a very happy caving trip, with over 6000 pixels, i definetly had plans for them but a didn't have the required iron and there was no way to store them, some hours later i was down to a little over 4000 pixels and i was still not in a hurry to get the iron, a little more time passed , i was now below 2500 pixels, that means there was no more reason to go after that iron.

So as you can see, a lot of money was wasted because i did not have a way to store it, i am not sad about it since my gear guarantees that i can get all that back without being constantly one hit but still, it was a waste.
    Thats the first reason.

second reason is not so dramatic (just dumb, or at least i think so),if there was no penality to storing your pixels, one could just store it all and bumrush trought a high reward hight threat situation with not wories, or enven worse, it would be possible to carry a compressor with you, get very deep into a planet, compact all your pixels into voxels and then jump into lava for a free teleport to the surface.

Some may think "but that's exactly wath i want to do, whi is it so bad?", these people forget , this is a survival game, you are meant to try avoiding death, not to try to use it as a tool of convenience.

Finaly the last reason: I like killing stuff and exploring, but i dont like wasting money. This update will let me do more of wath i like.

    If you want some tips:

1= try geting techs, they come in the very distinctive and shiny hight tech chests and they greatly improve your movement, need to fly out of a monster's dash? With techs you can! Wana dash at a monster before his ranged attack reloads? get techs! There is a monster sniping at you from a cramped and hard to reach spot? Techs help, but a ranged weapon is ideal here.

2= ranged weapons, you may be like me and have not been able to get a ranged weapon for a long time (excluding the useless hunting bows) , "how do i get a sniper rifle like the one that dungeon guard has???" the answear is simple: Explore a lot of planets, dungeon chests some times get you a weapon, but wath you realy want is a vilage of some sort, i am prety sure not all races can have weapon merchants but some definetly have! (just interact with them using the "e" key)

3= finaly, the one i know you will just ignore (i do to sometimes) and that will probably change a litlle with the update: pick your fights , if the enemy level is bigger than the armor level shown in your inventory screen, he most probably will one hit you, if his level is bigger than your weapon's armor penetration, you will deal close to no damage and, if the diference is very big, you wil have no knockback (and get one hit if you armor is as good as your weapon). Now don't get upset, i have gotten impervium equipment (maxed out), along with a penetration 41 weapon, and i still get easily killed wen caught with my guard down by a level 40+ monster.

I hope they make it harder to get pixels by killing monsters and add in the randomly generated quests and the main source of income.

If the penalty is too steep then you can accept the fee for the safety of the bank or you can practice, make necessary preparations, and in general get better at the game before you go into risky situations.

I thought we were talking about stuff like Savings Accounts here, which will slowly pay you money over time. Not Mutual Funds, which could get you more money over time, but may also cost you if things go downhill. <_>

Your complaints just make no sense. Getting pixels is extremely easy; as soon as I left the alpha sector I always had a ton of copper/silver/iron bars I didnt need any more. Pop those into your refinery>problem solved. Also, at this point pixels are a non-worry really. I have to say I think almost all items that cost pixels (except for furniture from the 3d printer) are way too cheap atm. you get all the pixels you need by just playing the game normally. Sure, sometimes you die a ton when encountering a prison or something, but then you can just go get your pixels back by farming for 5 minutes on a planet that's one or two levels lower than your weapon/armor is.

All in all I think the system is fine as it is and should even be harsher. A banking system should be accompanied with higher pixel costs on gear and other items, otherwise pixels will just become too easy to get and useless like those tons and tons of copper ores you keep finding on your level 20-30 planet.

Don't put words in my mouth :V

I didn't imply you guys should post "every single alternative" because "you're in the development and have all knowledge"
that's dumb, noone knows every possible alternative for a problem :lolwut:
But I DID imply that SOME alternative should be given, since OP gave none and it doesn't help game development at all :)
    savvy?

I don't remember the fiasco with the Housing Market actually causing the bank to take money from my Savings, though.

If you're going to be telling the OP to list out alternatives like that, how about you list one? You know, since neither OP nor anyone else in this thread seems to be doing that.

Now now, the last thing this thread needs is the politics of the American banking system. We got enough people at each others throats :p

I feel like there are times where he doesn't realize that he's wrong though. While playing the beta, there are some things that are just horribly implemented, like the Armor Pen damage system and such. I understand that it's a beta, but my only thought was "Have they not playtested it at all?" It took this long for Tiy to realize that it sucked. That says a lot about him.

The problem IS NOT THE PENALTY it's the fact that pixels are too easy to come by, before the penalty can even be addressed, first the value of pixels must be. I'm sorry to sound rude but if you can't get this though your skull then I guess we're done talking.
