Awful Pixel System

The game already provides you with plenty of cash, if you don't have enough you're dying too much.

If you die a lot, and you bank your cash often, you will lose less cash after this change than you are currently losing. So it wont get worse, it'll actually get better. You'll realize that as your pixel balance keeps climbing and climbing and you realize you actually have too much cash.

Don't forget you can also generate cash with the refinery. I have a character who I mine alot with and I have more cash than I can actually spend on crafting.

people also forget that there are items that sell for 1-6k per. unless those are subject to change. but the refinery is a great source of income it also takes useless ingots. but i use it for copper-silver-platinum

I'm going to take an unpopular stance here in hopes of something more interesting than the suggestions I've read in this thread. The suggestions are not equal to the cost of death for the security of pixels. I think there really needs to be some sort of lore around about what the pixels are. I don't think they are money, but an item that can turn into anything else, which is why they are needed to create from scans. I don't like the charge while scanning items to be fair, but I can consider the scan cost to be the energy cost of the scanning action.

Now, onto my strange suggestion. I am thinking that pixels should instead be used as fuel. Have the fuel cost and fuel capacity of the ship increase by sector. If this was done, then keeping or removing or limiting the loss of pixels on death could be possible if you store the pixels on the ship as fuel. Now the fuel will have a limit, so you could not store a lot on the ship. A removing fuel system will have to be made, and items like coal could not be taken back, but be transformed into pixels.

I greatly dislike the concept of Pixels. We mine the ore, get the items to make something and now we need some strange kind of currency to craft it ourselves at our own forges and such..?

If it ever gets to the point where I'm getting behind on the ability to make stuff I have all the materials for other than pixels I will cheat to remedy that problem. It's not often I choose to cheat in games (until many playthroughs later just for fun) but when a certain mechanic doesn't feel right, I do my best to be rid of it.

I can't really think of a good way to make this system feel right with the game. Reducing the penalty, other ways to earn it, more/less dropping from monsters.. Every thing I can think of or see suggested brings something negative with it. I just think it's bad, an artificial difficulty element designed to hold back player progress.

Pixels as fuel... another interesting suggestion. I could see it working, if everything was balanced accordingly.

So first you have to survive enough to get 1000 pixels early game, then you lose 40% of them to store them, and still lose 30% to die...not like they drop many at all at the start either. Why is this a good idea?

Yeahhh, that's pretty garbage. If they keep that, I'll just mod it out, and Mod in a system I prefer. I like the Idea of an ATM that takes a 10% deposit charge.

Hum, that's interesting. I've tried to sell to vendors with no success. How is it actually done?

I imagine pixels as being like the raw materials needed in Eclipse Phase to create stuff in replicators

Pixels are just the raw elements that go into the fabrication of various items

It's not implemented yet, but since the selling costs are displayed in the game it's pretty clear that it's planned :)

Tell that to my filled out 3d printer, i literally copied everything i could find :D

And still pixels weren't a issue, and that was with tons of deaths. (darn sniper rifle mooks)
Pixel system was, and will remain easy.

Uhhh...having made two characters now, one of which is derping in the T7 or 8 range because it's cheese mode, the other who is derping in T3 after beating the robo. I have no issues with pixels at all, you know the only time I've had an issue with pixels? When I was making an entire Glitch themed castle with a buddy, know why I had pixel issues? CAuse giant doors cost 2,500, NPCs cost 750, and guards cost 2,500. It's hella expensive to decorate in this game, that said we both blew through around 50+K Pixels just in decorating, never had an issue with Pixels, the banking system is interesting, I'm sure some people will be glad it's there, I personally won't care in the least, I don't die often, I don't find the game hard enough to die often.

As for the whole "grinding isn't fun" sorry almost every Korean MMO ever refutes that, RO refutes that. WoW refutes that (That's all WoW is, a giant grind, you just do it with friends.) Infact, every game out there is argueably a grind in one way or another, this one may just not be the "grind" for you. I for one enjoy it, I don't mind spending my free time derping off in this game mining for hours whilst I chat with a bunch of friends. To each our own. Hopefully they add a creative mode for people who feel the game is to exhausting.

The pixel storage bank has an idiotic penalty on it and I don't know why Tiy thought that was a good idea. Real life banks don't take 40% of all of the money you deposit...

To all those saying that the death penalty is fine because you get too many pixels in the mid to late game, I think you are missing the point. Most mid to late game content is not yet in the game, so apart from the odd weapon and splurge on decorating your castle there is not much to spend your pixels on currently. I guarantee that you will regret your comments when you are saving up for some awesome late game content only to have the last hour of playtime thrown out of the window because you hit the wrong block of sand and ended up falling down into a pit of enemies with only 25% health remaining.

Real banks also can't endlessly print money.

I think you are missing the point. Until it is in the game the only thing we have to go by is what we know now which is that pixels are not even in such limited supply to be a problem anyway. Until that changes your argument is moot. Let the devs do their job. If it doesn't work out they'll change it. If they think it is the best move for the time being then it is better than anyone in this thread can say.

I feel like I'm missing something. If I have 1000 pixels, and lose 30 percent of them every time I die, I'll still always have something. ^^ Besides, the pixel cost for items was nerfed so hard that it's a joke. I have to grind for ores more than I have to for pixels. Heck, just heading down into one cave, there are always like 10 of those pixel capsules.

I do think the pixel bank is a good idea (I'll play without it, as I actually like losing something when I die) and I hope a compromise can be found for both types of players. What I don't understand is that people still seem to expect to be able to go from nothing to top level gear in 5 hours or less. It's frustrating because I think it will negatively affect the future of the game.

I can't help but feel like we have a good example of a game where you lose everything on death, including very rare items, and it's rather easy to get into deadly situations. A game that's been lauded by people across the world for it's design. A game where one misstep can send you into a skeleton den with your diamonds, or where not looking behind you can cause a creeper to make you lose your stacks of redstone.
No, I won't regret saying that the game should have a death penalty when I die. If I wanted to explore the cosmos without the feeling of being a small, insignificant dot that can be crushed at any moment I'd play Space Engine. When you die in games bad things happen- I surely didn't regret the 3 life system when I jumped down a put in Mario and lost all my progress and had to start over. A video game without a serious death penalty, especially in an RPG/exploration hybrid like Starbound, would be awful.

I do want to specify here that the pixel costs for forging armor aren't a main concern, I don't think. The costs for them are pretty manageable even with the current penalties. All these penalties keep you from doing, realistically, is 3D printing furniture for your house. I don't think that such harsh penalties should be placed on what amounts to the fun sandbox gameplay.
