Howdy, Aviona here! I've wanted to do a house show-off of sorts, but then I realized that I'm terrible at building houses! Gosh, that makes things a lot harder! BUT, fear not good associates and friends! For Aviona has a plan! I would like to start a little experiment of sorts. How it's going to start, is i'm going to show you the items I have available for building, and you guys will make suggestions on what I can use to build, or even blocks to progress through this wonderful house! So, without further ado, here is the first screenshot! The torches mark my spawning location (which I've flattened out already), and you can see the items that I can use for this wonderful build. (excluding wood, I totally forgot to put all my wood on this inventory window). I look forward to what you guys suggest! EDIT#1 (image above) So I've started what's going to be the shape of my house, might add onto it, probably will, but for now I have to sleep (long day tomorrow), then get more sandstone! Right now i'm mostly taking suggestions for shape, and style of the house, we're not going to get into furniture and walls yet Anyways, Sleep time! EDIT #2 (image above) Bigger image, incoming! I wanted to take a fullscreen screenshot so you can better see everything. Made the roof, it kiiiinda look like butts, but i'm going to find ways to make it not look so bad, haha.so what i'm thinking now, is what do do for walls. I want something smooth, and almost like normal white modern walls, is there anything you guys would suggest? or do you think I should do a totally different wall material? Give me yo suggestions! Also, I may or may not have taken the lights from my ship, which is now a dark, and creepy place. EDIT#3 (image above) Guys! Guys! It's actually starting to look like a house! I decided to try something new for me, and tried my hand at adding depth to the house by adding the background wall on the rigth side of the house. I REALLY like the outcome! I also couldn't find soft brick ANYWHERE on my planet. Spent a good long time looking, but no luck, so I spawned some in to make the walls in the house. I know! I'm a baddie! Next I'm going to look into what kind of furniture is easy to make, and nice looking
The most reliable resources you can build something with are cobblestone and dirt bricks (or whatever they are called, didn't play in a while), as well as sandstone, and a brick roof. I'd recommend starting off with a brick mansion, that's all I can think of when it comes to the resources you're using ^^;
Alrighty! so I'll start with the dirt Brick as the outer walls, Any suggestions (from anyone or yourself) as to what style I should make the house? rectangular, square, some crazy shapes? You can even show house images from things other than starbound, or real life, or whatever for inspiration! EDIT: I've kinda fallen in love with the sandstone bricks! Now I have to go find myself some more sandstone, hehe
I'd say go for something that looks similar to this: Also sandstone is indeed a great looking building material
A nice amount of soft brick would be needed to do that. Everyone does after he covered the wonderful fact that you can paint sandstone brick, too (in contrast to cobble stone and packed dirt). I think that your first thought should be, where do you land when you beam down on your planet. In the garden? On a terrace? Or in the building itself? If so, in which part? Do you have an atrium? A special, representative room? Or do you land on the dining table?
In that case Lari could paint the stone bricks white to make it look almost exactly like the picture, can you paint sandstone brick white in the vanilla game or the nightly builds? Personally I think that as long as there's a main hall type of area the player should beam down there. Either something like points A or B: Or something like this (C):
I actually made it so I land directly in front of my front door, haha. I guess that's not super fancy, but i find it convenient. Also, how did I not know you can paint sandstone?! This goes to show how much i build in Starbound. I've always just explored planets, and collected materials(except sandstone, apparently ).
It's news to me too apparently ^^; EDIT: Maybe I'll try jumping along the bandwagon and try to build something as well, I've been pretty good when building in Minecraft so in here it won't be too hard to get to the same level of skill I had there
It's possible. Sandstone is especially nice if you want to paint mosaic like pictures, because it has that certain gravure which soft brick and other sorts of paintable stone lacks. As such, pictures have an ancient, clasical touch like roman or greek mosaics. Examples:
i'm stuck between red or blue now! I'm assuming you dye it with the petals? So you would have a Yellow, Blue or Red option?
Well, it's still up to you, but I would suggest to use soft brick for the background wall; however, the windowframes should be marked with sandstone brick again, and the windows itself should consist of wooden windows. You also should consider how you are going to use the rooms, so that you may have an idea how you want to get the windows in order. For example, I'm sure you are going to have a kitchen or something like that, so there should be place for an oven in one angle; and a chimney should also have an angle in the living room without windows. Ideally, I imagine something like this. It's not so important to stick to a certain idea, but have an idea, which may evolve to something different.
i actually LOVE this idea. i was looking at the insides of my house, and trying to think how i would make the walls, so this is just wonderfully perfect. I'm going to try this!
That's nice. Maybe - if you're interested, I would add a last little thing before I would consider the interior. You may add a terrace. What about some columns in the background layer, wooden fences and a bit green? You can do this with plant matter stone. http://starbounder.org/Plant_Matter_Stone Then, you may build a balustrade on the first floor, also adding a table and two seats to eat outside when the weather is nice. As always: only a suggestion. I would prefer avian furniture for the interior. However, regarding the light, candelabra and lusters from the Glitch may fit best. Ah, and regarding soft brick, you'll only find it in Avian villages, Glitch villages and the mini houses biome in the underground. I prefer the last one, but it can be tricky to find one. http://starbounder.org/Village_Mini_Biome
Soooooo, this is laaame. I can't seem to get my starbound to work, and it seems the only way at this point I can fix it is to delete My character.... I've tried a lot of other ways, and looked online for solutions, and the only one I haven't tried is deleting everything and reinstalling. If i can't get it fixed, i'm going to try just deleting my char and starting from scratch, which is going to take foreeeever. Ugh.
Maybe you could use some sort of an inventory editor? Considering it's just to restore your character I don't think it counts as cheating.
I might just try doing that, because I switched over to vanilla, and it's working alright, so I might just use the creative mode mod Yeah, I saved both by player folder and my universe folder, just in case the Nightly version becomes more stable.
