Avians suddenly mainstream?

The common definition of hipster:

1. Likes "vintage" things - old t-shirts, old movies, old cars.
2. Listens to indie rock - funny enough, the #1 song on the US Billboard Hot 100 is an indie rock song.
2a. The indie rock they listen to will always have the fact that "you've probably never heard of them" thrown on the end, so Royals is not one of those songs.
3. Has a specific fashion aesthetic they believe is unique to them, but actually follows their subculture's established norms (oooh, I get to use the vocabulary I learned in Sociology 101!) just like every other subculture (e.g., metal heads wear leather and denim).
3a. That fashion aesthetic includes vintage t-shirts, glasses (lenseless glasses [i.e., frames] if your vision is good), scarves, and tight pants.
4. Always prefers things that are "not mainstream" - indie movies, music, games, even food.

 

I hate to sound like an asshole, but this thread screams "pretentious".

 

I thought Florans would be underplayed but most streamers I've seen have chosen them.

 

Squirel, I bet most of the races will end up being pretty common. Although, most of the streams I've seen are glitch, only one was avian. And polls always have Apex in dead last.

Playing as the perceived underdog can be fun. This is a role-playing game, after all. Half the fun can be creating a character with personality.

Technically speaking, your experience ISN'T going to be radically different from others - regardless of race. We are all going to mine ore, cut down trees, explore worlds and craft items. There really isn't "Avian gameplay" as you play the game the same as others for most of the experience. When you DO unlock your racial armor, it's going to let you glide. This will add a new dynamic to combat for sure, but isn't really going to flip the paradigm on mining or space travel or crafting or any of the other systems not heavily dependent on movement.

Beyond that, you will gain access to the other race's armors, so before long even that won't be unique. Land on an ocean world? Pop on the Hylotl armor for swimming and underwater breathing. Land on a rock full of precious minerals? Switch to Glitch armor for increased mining speed. Etc.


To put it in the most basic terms: There is a kink in your think.


What makes you special in Starbound isn't your race. It's what you DO. If you want to feel special, instead of spending time worrying about what races everyone is playing, think about what you can do. Maybe you'll be the first person to dig out an entire planet while wearing an Egyptian Pharaoh's hat, and then use all that dirt to build the first SPACE PYRAMID. Maybe you'll skip all the armor and tiers and just focus on being the best trainer and breeder of alien species. Perhaps you'll pick a Hylotl and decide to teraform a hostile desert world into a lush aquatic oasis for your kind.

There are 6 races right now, 7 when the novakid come out at launch. Assuming equal distribution, there will be 14% of the population playing any given race. Instead of finding the one that has only 8% of the player base, take this time to work out your Space Legacy.

 

I was planning on going Floran, but that was before their updated ship :/

I am now going Human. Honestly, just pick whichever race you like and don't let anything else influence your decision except how you like the race.

 

Why would I play a human in a fantasy/sci-fi game when i play one in real life...........and it sucks, the quests are horrible and the loot takes forever to get.

 

I personally think Apex are the coolest. I mean come on, they're basically planet of the apes apes!

Well, I don't know their lore...so maybe not in that regard. But still...come on!

On the flip side of things, sometimes things are popular and justifiably so. Just about anything VALVe makes for instance.

What those examples really prove is that popularity is entirely separate from quality.

No, hipsters attempt to stay ahead of the latest trends. Sometimes behind, but typically it's more a matter of being ahead by being behind, since the popularity of a given style tends to circular. If something becomes too popular they abandon it on principle of it being popular.

 

Don't really care what other people are, i pick Avians because of their Egyptian / Goa'Uld (from Stargate) aesthetics in ship design and such.
And some of the Aztec / Mayan god influences which i also like.

 

I think everyone who wanted to be a Novakid decided to be Avian?
I personally wanted to be a Novakid, and Avians seems sleek and cute too, so I went that route.

 

Not as hipster as you once thought they were!

 

If it interests you to play an Avian. Then spread your wings and fly far off unto endless possibility. I will name my craft Tyson or Perdue. The factory will own the farm. You have been warned.

 

Play the race you like the best. There is no merit in choosing something because few or many people like it.

If you really want an overlooked race, go with the apex.

The seem to have the smallest following, and I have seen many people dismiss them as the ugliest looking race of the lineup.
Personally, though, I love them because they have such interesting lore.
What kind of brutal, tactical, calculating, communist race would you have to be to willingly make yourself look like an ancient species in order to enhance your mind?

...Did I mention they are communists?
