Some people still seem to believe that the Avians did the wrong thing here. And honestly, I'm not sure why. Florans are to the galaxy what locusts are to Earth.

Imagine if a plague of locusts swept across the grasslands of America and stumbled across a tank and then, in the time it took for pesticides to be prepared to deal with the locusts, they learned to operate the tank and began firing the main gun at random things in the vicinity whilst crushing everything that was in front of their treads.
That is what the Avians might see the Florans as.

To be perfectly honest, had I been in charge of the Avians, I would have burned the area around the ship until it was molten from orbital bombardment and then blown the core on the ship.

To be fair, the Loyalists actually came across, to me, as very much sympathetic. The problem is that we don't see anything about this split until someone shatters their worldview with a metaphorical sledgehammer. Before the discovery of the Glitch, all of the differences between Loyalist and Stargazer were pretty academic and the worst of it was probably nasty words and a few punches over those differences. Then, from left field, comes the fact that no, they aren't alone and they are posed to make contact. I think they panicked.
Besides, history is written by the winners, right? I'd take anything written about that fight with a grain of salt.

  3. I actually felt that things came across as quite feasible. Both groups seemed to have quite logical points, each that could be defended with proper argumentation. The background setting for each faction was also well made and believable. It felt like those radical groups throughout history that fought for freedom (such as for religious tolerance) against the majority and those in power who were typically against the movements. While the Loyalists did come across as the villains due to their actions, the Stargazers had the advantage of better technology, which indeed gave them a better position over their adversaries. The duel was an interesting ending, though. It sort of showed the Avians' honour to settle the conflict with no further casualties. (Even though there were some Loyalist bastions later on)

That does bring up a good point though, are the Lore pieces written in an overall narration, or are they based on a specific point of view?
So for example this document, is it written by a Stargazer Avian?

Could be interesting to see two documents that relay the same event from different sides, (the Floran escape vs the blockade by the Avians.)

  5. ^ That is indeed a pretty good point. Lots of writings created by Roman scribes during the time of the Empire, for instance, were created to honour the nation, rather than give a neutral point of view.

Or a more current-day example, North Korea. They are shown to be great, and all the other countries are evil.

wtf, couldn't the Glitch bring a flamethrower or a pair of molotovs or something?
A whole robot research team being brutalized by a bunch of plants just sounds unlikely.

You've gotta remember, though. The Glitch are medieval and have no knowing that the're "robots."

and then there's the faulty glitch
AKA the ones that actually managed into space

Well, they didn't necessarily make the technology to go into space. The avians gave it them and the Glitch just built on that.

actually its the opposite. avians had primitive starships and FTL drives and its after getting a hand on glitch technology that they improved upon theire design

Honestly, the Avians did the only logical thing with the blockade. They encountered a sentient, primitive species and tried to establish contact - that failed, rather badly, due to the Florans hyper-aggressive nature. These same Florans, mind you, also showed a remarkable propensity for learning how to use alien tech (read: Glitch and Avian) in very short periods of time. This meant that if they ever got the ability to go off-world - and obviously, they did - this incredibly volatile lifeform would start attacking everyone they ran into, both Avian and Glitch.

What do you do? They ARE a sentient lifeform, even if a violent and primitive one - to just bombard the planet from orbit would be committing genocide, and a regression for the Avians. You can't reason with the Florans and establish diplomacy either, and letting them run around is not acceptable. So you try to keep them, unharmed, to their own planet. Which, really, is a fine solution. It gives the species more time to grow and evolve, perhaps move past base animalistic (plantalistic?) instinct.

Now, obviously that didn't work out. :p But still, it's hardly 'cruel'.

if anything it was the "kind" thing to do.
nuking the whole planet would have been the "cruel" course of action

  14. Should the Robots represent some sort of Medieval-inspired society, these researchers would fall into something among the lines of monks. They must have lacked proper fighting skills and tried the good-faith approach, only to be turned into scrap.

The florans are really one of the most intelligent races out there though. They're primitive, but they have a large number of people that are capable of taking ruined technology and doing what seems impossible with it.

But... but florans have cooties! Avians are supposed to hate them because it's... icky and stuff!

Floran society is also very xenophobic and they will murder all non plant life if they get the chance to. They seem numerous and they can easily reverse engineer technology, they're easily capable of zerg rushing a planet, wiping it out, multiplying, and continuing the cycle on another planet.
