The way it was described in the Avian lore document made it seem to me like the Florans were almost sort of mindless. The impression I got was like termites; smart enough to build a society and a community, but when you get down to it, it's just a group of eating machines.

I can see where you're coming from I just have a problem with thinking that the Florians don't consider other races important (the ant analogy) . The other races gave them their technology by accident so the Florians thought that this tech magically appeared? They didn't think that someone else may have discovered it and possibly been thankful to that other race? I mean from the little glance that we were given we can't make too many major guesses about the florians' culture. I think this all boils down to I'm a sap and want species to be more than consume-expand-consume or kill-take-kill. :Immasap: (should be a face)

Unfortunately, it clearly states that they are very eat-meat oriented. Pro tip, your made of meat. So if you arent floran, you're food.

Best hope your ship doesnt crashlando n a floran planet.

To add my own thoughts on floran culture, it seems they regaurd us as if we were animals rather than ants. They know were capable of being intelligent (Monkies, dogs, dolphins) but honestly dont give a darn about it. They are an agressive, mean, angry sounding species. Like the cannibalistic tribes in our own world. They just dont give a darn OR if they do, its because they find it -fun- to hunt you down like you are an animal. Because, to them, you are.

I can't wait for the floran lore so we'll know what the floran really are like.

  5. I just need some clarification here from the folks in charge:

At the end of the pdf document made accessible, we can see the sentence: "[user account is not authorized to read further]"

My question is: Is there more Avian lore pending before the game actually takes place or does the game start right after the last entry? I'm assuming that there is more lore, but can't be certain until someone confirms it. :)

Other information from the original Floran entry implies there is more after. The Floran entry there states that they have managed to spread quite effectively after running the blockade. SO looks like the Avians failed pretty badly.

The right thing to do for the Avians was to try to stop the Florans. Individual florans can be different, but the majority of florants cannot grasp the concept of non plant life, so they'll just eat everything and destroy entire planets because they don't understand what they're doing. They will do their best to get whatever they want from everywhere they can, and what they want is to invade other planets, and their dietary preferences will lead to them devastating their ecosystems.

The Avians were trying to protect everyone from Floran invasion. That's all.

Also, my character, being more racist against Florans than glitch, is probably going to like the Avians quite a bit. I'm considering retconning him to not dislike Glitch anyway.

The Florans were savages. It's like having a planet full of viscous beasts that only want to kill and conquer. The Avians were trying to prevent the Florans from spreading and destroying other species, doesn't seem like a jerk move to me.

Context! The Florans friggin' ruined the Glitch. It's part of one of the books referenced in the history. :D

I'm more surprised the Avians didn’t try to uplift and maybe help educate the Florans away from their savage tendencies. (They seemed to be headed in that direction what with their own species history of being helped by a more advanced species.) Yes, they would have been seen as food, but thats where their Glitch allies could have come in. Were talking about a race that is hostile now, and shockingly good at technical development and reverse engineering.

Eventually they would come into conflict with them, as they appear to have as of the last entry. The Avians seem to be more than a little short sighted in how they deal with the world, and not just in this instance. And as has been noted, not all Florans are meat hungry carnivores, all they would have had to do is bolster those friendlier Florans and eventually they would have defused the ticking time bomb that is the Floran species.

Still, it makes for a much better story overall to have the Florans running blockades to expand. Now we get some hatred between the two. One who sees the other as violent savages. The other who sees their opposite as a cruel, overbearing tyrant. And then you can have subfactions within that. You could have a group of Pro-Floran Avians who think they’ve been sorely mistreated. Then you could have renegade Florans who might begrudgingly agree with the Avians as they stand against their own people.

Like I said, it makes for a more interesting story.

The Florans vs Everyone seems kind of interesting, but will the Florans have any allies?

Also, I can't wait to see what you do with the Hylotl.

Note: Kluex did not die. He disappeared. He was already far older than an avarage avian. Who's to say that he isn't still alive in in seclusion?

who said it was even possible to "educate" them. you know, you cant "educate" someone if they will outright attack you and wont even let you talk (or eat you in the case of florans as described)

You know, my opinion changed. I think the avians made the right move blockading the planet. But my character is kind of angry over it.

If I were the Avians, I'd be afraid of a bunch of carnivorous plants that can learn enough about a FTL drive to use it in the time it takes me to blockade the planet too.

It is good, very good. But there is one thing that bugged me: the conflict between Stargazers and Loyalists.

Stargazers came as too "Mary Sue" in my opinion, being enlightened progressivists against unwashed masses and triumphing over these in each and every battle. The landslide is too rapid. Good smart guys have beaten stupid jerks and brought their race to prosperity. Yeah, right, of course, I believe that most people who are interested in space exploration and other things natural science can offer do have dreams about something like this happening in our world, with Reason defeating obsolete and petrified philosophies and viewpoints, sure. And I personally hope that this will come. But it won't go as easy, and the fact an analogy to possibly the greatest showdown in human history was shown as such an easy war seems somewhat weak to me.

Also, it is obvious that everyone will perceive Loyalists as bad guys. And that is fine, their doctrine is ridiculous, it leads to stagnation and degradation, et cetera. But this is the problem. They are shown not as "humans avians with another set of values and beliefs" bad, they are almost "Tolkien orcs" bad. They don't have any sympathetic or redeeming qualities, which makes them pretty one-dimensional villains in my book.

Again, this dual point aside, great reading, looking forward to everything else.
