As I'm sure, many of you have already deep-read the Avian lore document in the newest Starbound Chronicle (If not, go here).

As I'm also sure, this very well planned and intriguing lore left a lot to wonder and ponder on. Therefor I created this topic here to give us a place to do this.

I'll start by asking a question, to engage conversation.

"Do you think it was right of the Avians to try and contain the Florans as they did?"

Yes, the blockade was extremely smart on the Avian's part.

It seemed rather cruel to me. They have no right to prevent the Florans astral access, the Stargazers basically became Loyalists. I think that putting up blockades around their own planets would have been reasonable, as a mean of self-defense, but stopping them entirely was extreme.

  4. Yeah, it just didn't really work out very well for them. :ssssssssss:

The Florans seem like quite tough a people to reason with. They seem to be more acting on instinct, rather than thinking things through. A bit scary and dangerous, as a matter of fact - A Floran would just ignore you as it would bite your knees off.

My favourite parts were the internal conflicts between the Loyalists and the Stargazers (that was pretty well worked out) and Kluex's origins. ^^

Well, I think the Florans act out of fear. They've had invaders, probes and ships crash into their home for years. Then they try traveling outwards and meet conflict. I think their hostile reaction is practically expected of them at that point. If we looked at this from a heroic point of view, the Florans basically just burst through a blockade of invading enemies. They should be marked heroes.

I noticed how it said it was subject to change. I'd tell that chap who writes the lore now (demanrisu, I believe) that I love it the way it is now. It's awesome and I don't think a change is necessary. To answer your question: Yes. The Avians are right in keeping those gluttonous Florans from getting out so they can kill and eat everything. If anything, they're helping them by keeping them from getting fat.

note how in the lore, it mentions how florans just freakin EAT every sentients in sight (and probably a lot of non-sentient things too, other florans included) and how they wanted to reach for the star to expand and consume.
sounds like stopping a disease. from spreading. im okay with that. its a wonder the florans downright didint revive the avian's xenophobia and warrant a nuke down

Yeah, I'm getting the impression the Florans are pretty much the Zerg of Starbound. It's certainly an interesting twist on the age-old "voracious insect race eating everything" motif in sci-fi. Instead of being insect-like, you have PLANTS!

I don't think a lot of human cultures would have reacted very differently to the florans honestly. Their description a while ago mentions also that individually they act a lot more civilly, so it could be a mob mentality thing going on. Or being a younger species, they might just not have the empathy towards other beings that has developed in the other races.

Am I the only one who noticed that the Loyalists and Stargazers are a little like American Republicans and Democrats, respectively?

  15. A parallel may be established between other groups as well, such as the Roundheads (Stargazers) and Royalists (Loyalists) during the English Civil War in the 17th century, for instance. It's quite interesting. ^^

Well, In my opinion it's survival of the fittest. The gazelles (sic) dont show anger at the lions, they just get eaten. And if the rest of the florans want to eat people, so be it. I'm sticking with bacon and corn.

survival of the fittest dosent always work the right way and can be pretty circumstancial. as complex as human are, cockroaches will always survive us and in this case, florans sounds more like invasive and highly destructive parasite

I don't understand your point or logic. First off, gazelles don't just get eaten. They have their means of not getting eaten obviously. Hell in some rare cases gazelles do strike at lions. It's killing the egg before it hatches kind of deal that happens all the time in nature. Again, I don't understand. Are you defending the Florans by saying it's is right for them to go out and eat everything because they can, and if things get eaten then they are weak and shouldn't live anyway? Technically, cages, traps, and killing eggs before they hatch are a means of survival of the fittest so you're basically contradicting yourself. Not to mention it would be introducing species (Florans). Introducing species can fuck up an entire ecosystem. Gazelles and lions are at least in the same habitat and are built around each other to survive. But introduced species have a competitive advantage over native species because their natural enemies aren't around. They can multiply unchecked, using up valuable resources, such as sunlight, water and nutrients. Native species suffer from this intense competition. Just look at what happened to the Everglades.

tl;dr Florans are considered pests in this situation and the Avians Pest Control. You keep ants in their anthills. You don't want them wandering off and infesting your house.
