He used the avian's from the ship, got them to aggro him, then dodged the bullets and let them hit the UFO. I thought about it but building are to laggy on my computer. I did do something semi-similar, I used the UFO to kill his own minions. So I never bothered with the ground penguins.
The bug is that avians led out of their ship duplicate. I found a planet with an avian pirateship, and a couple of the crew members fell out. The next thing I saw them, there were two of each. Maybe it's mitosis.
