Not necessarily. I'd imagine that since their control is vertical, there's absolutely nothing preventing them from slipping their tail between their legs while laying down.
That and there's many ways to lay down. Such as curled up on their side, hugging their tails to their chests

To be fair, when you have wings, a long tumble down stairs is the least of your worries.

lol unless that anti-craft gun fires fusion or nuclear rounds... I think anything less than that would have a hard time cracking a ship that's armored and over 300 meters long, and no I didn't forget about railguns Also... little something about fusion based weapons... you don't need a DAMN targeting system if you lure said ship into a mine field and set off those mines remotely. Even a glance explosion hit would do significant damage.

Probably not. As Ryu stated before they have good up/down movement. Having it pointing straight down probably is no issue.
